In the end, I had a 4.75 with 183 votes and 43,496 views for Katie's Eden, not so bad.
There's always Nude Day.

you just edged me.. but whopped me in votes... would up with a 4.74 and 78 votes.... but all what beat me... deserve greatness!!!!... hmmmm.. come to think of it.. most every story did!!!!!

The upstate returns came in earlier than expected. Contrary to the predictions of experts and exit polls, I managed to slip into second place behind Softouch, and one little-bitty vote ahead of Mcfbridge.

In my case, it appears Laurel made a last sweep and caught two one-bombs. I went from 41 votes and a score of 4.73, to 39 votes and 4.84. It surprised, and pleased, the hell out of me. Dreampilot and I had discussed by PM the possible outcome and both agreed it was probably a fight for last place.

A special "atta girl" to English Lady for doing so much to help scare up votes, to Softy and Mcfbridge for their accomplishments, and to all the competitors for putting up with me. Now having had my turn in the "also-ran" spotlight, I can look forward to lusting for last place in the Nude Day contest.

But 183 votes? That's huge -- 4.5 times as many as mine!

(I wonder if # of votes shouldn't somehow be weighted for both winners and losers -- not sure how you'd do that ... prolly a bad idea, and no I'm not letting go of my Super-Earth Decoder Ring.)

Thank you kindly, Cookie. It's amazing how close the scores were. Softy seems to have had a lock on first, But I got second with 4.84, mcfbridge third with 4.83, then there were Cookie's 4.82 and 4.81, and several others, including Scarlett and dreampilot within a .10 of second place.

Just call me landslide.

JMO, but I think it's a telling comment on the overall quality of the entries that we're all so closely bunched. I mean the numbers separate us, but when you get down to .1s or even .01s, no one can take that as a statement on differences in quality.

Any of those could have won, I think.

There are two points to be made from that comment which I agree with totally...

To a certain extent, the winners and loosers are a matter of luck.... who sees them and who votes and well... .1 and .01.. could go either way.

The second point is that the quality of writing puts us all up there... and because of that quality... one can not feel bad loosing to anyone else... their quality is such that to even be in the same group is an honor!!!!

your " going away" post also lacked the despair of your story, but the linking of the decision to the story was troubling.

Please, don't destroy my dreams!! Softie deserved to win cos he wrote a fantasy we all dream about. RF and bridgey wrote superb stuff as well - but they didn't quite win.

For once I don't agree with you. The contestants have sharpened up in successive contests. The Valentine's Day one had many brilliant stories and the overall standard was much higher than last year.

Earth Day is a difficult theme to tackle. The variety of approaches to it is interesting and the writing has been good. The winners deserve our praise but the rest do too.

Edited for PS: I do not have a FAILURE thread. The last place contenders haven't failed. They might have written stories that are less popular than others but they are valid versions of Earth Day stories. I deliberately tried to write an on-theme entertaining story that was Non-Erotic, was about a funeral but a story that I hoped people would enjoy. The Last Place Contest allows us to experiment with our writing and still get some recognition for it.
