James Barron
All of the newer stuff, used books, were put on their shelves. The collectibles and rarities were safely locked away inside the cabinets in the back room. A few books that needed mending were left in a box next to the workbench. The other boxes were stacked in the corner. James stood behind the counter, sliding the last few books into place. He'd found several forgeries, and a few older books not worth much. He put them behind the counter for anyone who wanted them. And could afford them. Even forgeries of books, if old enough and well done, could fetch a pretty penny.
The old puppet had had all its strings removed. It served as a bookcase for a shelf right behind the register. The computer sat on a small table against the wall, from where he could use it, and take care of the register. It sat, back against the books, feet against the end of the shelf. It's head was forward, its arms folded behind it to give it the look of relaxing while still serving a purpose. A few other things he'd grabbed, a nice vase, a toy wooden duck, and a large model of a sea-crossing sailing ship he couldn't tell the type of, were spaced between the books. It gave the impression of filling the large shelves, even though there were only so many books there.
James yawned, it had taken all night to set that up, and the sun was rising. Smiling, he raced upstairs. There, all the odd books he'd found were stored in a converted old wardrobe. Throwing open the doors, he smiled at all the old books. He pulled the silver pocketwatch out of his pocket, setting the time and winding it up. On the side that opened to show the face was a pentagram, and the other side showed an old man in robes wandering through a forest. It was faded with use. He set it on an empty space in the shelves, and moved to the shower to wash up before opening the store.
~~~~~~A Good Shower Later~~~~~~
He applied deodorant before pulling the shirt on. He buttoned the two lower buttons on the collared shirt, leaving the third undone. He checked his belt, and then his zipper before nodding. He turned, and picked the watch up. He hooked the end of the chain to a beltloop before letting the watch fall into his pocket. He picked out the first book on the top shelf: The Basics of Wizardry: A Guide to Spellcraft and hopped down the stairs two at a time. He grinned broadly as he hit the ground floor. He set the book on the counter, and unlocked the door, turning the sign to 'Yes, We're Open' as the first rays of sun shone over the horizon. Nobody would be expecting the store to be open this early, and this way he could read the book before any customers came, and they wouldn't be unhappy if he forgot to open on time and they wanted in. He sat down behind the register, and opened the book to the first page as he began to read.....
