Epoch: After the Comet Passed

Why don't you become one of the survivors Mari? It's not sci-fi more like a disaster movie on an apparent world wide scale.

Petar has already introduced the Epochs and I imagine there will be other 'nare do wells and scoundrels' *G* to cause us problems and perhaps to try and spirit off the 'damsels in distress' so they have to be rescued of course. *chuckling*

I'm thinking up some chara's now. Soon I will post them both for you guys.

I've already discussed the thread with Petar and decided not to take part.

I'm sure it will be great fun, but in this instance, I'll read along.

Have fun all!

IC: Peter Freebourne

Peter Freebourne found the LA library just on the outskirts of LA central. Here the roads were cluttered with open doored cars and what seemed to be signs of looting.

He stopped the car in the middle of the road, took the handgun and made sure he brang extra bullets just in case. Peter looked at the LA District Library building and saw the lights were on which could mean one of two things; a. the lights were left on or b. someone or something was inside or still is inside.

Silence. Not even birds in the sky. Suddenly a noise from behind him and he turned with a start pulling up the handgun. It had come from the alleyway on the otherside of the street.

And then he heard a sound that gladened him, that didn't frighten him....a MEOW, then a trashcan sound hitting the ground and moments later a tabby tomcat came racing out around the corner with half a decayed fish. The cat didnt see Peter, it just ran into a door of a apartment complex. Okay, good to see some life survived like me, Peter said to himself.

He turned back and walked slowly and cautiously towards the library. Coming to the doors, he found them wide open and stray books strewn across the lawn and going inside. Looks like looting has taken place, he told himself.

Peter held his handgun in the ready position and entered through the doors. A smell of a decaying compost heap hit his senses and he climbed the front 10 steps and saw the reason for the smell. What had been the Assistance Desk was now covered in compost and gardening refuse. To Peter, this was strange, why would someone want to do this? What if it was not a someone, but a something?

Nothing moved or was heard except for the strumming of the strobed fluro lights from the ceiling. He walked with gun ready to what had previously been the Assistance Desk and looked around. What he saw almost made him lose the gun and nausea overcame him.

Human remains....bones picked clean of flesh and membranes. Something had eaten humans and left them here. Was it a nest? Things were getting stranger and stranger with the passing minute.

Looking away, his eyes went to the computer terminal, which was on. A screen saver had activated and Peter pressed enter, the screen saver vanished and Peter gasped;

"News Headlines at 9pm: Top Story - in one hour the comet named Epoch passes Earth and for 30 minutes the Earth will be enveloped within its wide comet tail. This is a once every million year event and there is expected to be a massive outpouring of people out on the streets of LA and California to witness this event. In other news...."

The date was not said, but to Peter this pieced together missing pieces. He checked his watch and saw it was almost 4pm. Time to go, he said to himself.

Walking back to the car, he saw the shadows had lengthened and were slowly deepening giving this part of LA a deep sense of melancholy.

Peter got in his car and started the engines. He would go to the local gas station and then leave LA.

Oliver Winchester, III:

The night passed as silently as all have since he emerged from his basement lab/workshop in the Retreat's cavern home. He ate in the empty reastaurant and even washed his dishes then hit the road heading from Bakersfield to Los Angles.

He turned on the two radios and set them on scan. He heard to broken transmissions on the CB radio, one asking for help or so it seemed and the other warning people away from "the Warlord's" turf, whereever the hell that may be and whoever this Warlord may be.

Oliver drove slowly watching side to side and in the big side mirrors for any sign at all of people, but so far no luck at all. Now he's about 35 minutes out of Bakersfield and approaching a small town.

Ana lived in Kern Lake, born and raised here. She hated this little town but with it being such a small town, lack of work is what kept her here. It was in the middle of no where type town, though it was growing and some researching lab had opened up a few miles up the road. This lab was to research the caves and some rare stones that were deep inside this cave out of town a little ways.

Luckily she knew this cave very well, it was like her get away place. Therefore allowing her to work for this company as a guide and an assistant. And this would have allowed her to save enough money and move the hell out of this messed up town. LA wasn't exremely far from here, but Ana wouldn't have had the money to actually live there.

When the comets tail hit, it was big news. Everyone and anyone was excited, throwing lame parties just for a comet show. Granted it almost tempted Ana to go, but something didn't about it didn't feel right, it gave her a feeling that was almost ......deathly?!?! ......... So she ended up staying deep inside the cave to gather bits and peaces of puzzled information tha she had been working on the past few week prior to that.

After hours of being the cave, only solving maybe two peices of this scattered information she left to go home and take a break. On her way home throughout the town she had noticed that there wasn't a single soul around. Not even bodies of possible dead people, nothing. That deathly feeling she had earlier came back 1000x stronger. Obviously this wasn't quite what she had expected, the most she was expecting was limbs and dead bodys burnt to a crisp... Or ashes from the intense heat. But this, this was unreal.

It has been a few days since this has happened, at first she was terrified of being this alone. Hell there wasn't anything out here to begin with and now complete isolation? Ana would go insane if she stayed here to much longer. Spending the first day or so locked her house afraid to come to out, deciding it was time to lose that fear and go seek out people.... Somewhere...

The radio and tv always had messed up reception out here so of course they were out, nothing but static. Packed up a few things and threw them in the car that she was going to take, leaving it unlocked with out thinking much about it. Walked through the town to gather more things. Food, and perhaps... Guns.... shivered at the thought of a using a gun. Though, what better time to learn how one works.

These two men that she has never seen before came walking out of the food store, it was clear that they hadn't taken a shower in sometime, even more clear that they haven't seen a female in who knows how long. The second they saw her red hair, deep green eyes. Delicate body that at first glance didn't seem like much, specially with a halter top showing off supple breast and her waist. Tight jean shorts that hugged the top of her thighs and firm ass.

They started to advance on her, it was slow at first as they both walked to either side of her. Ana backed up slowly so she wouldn't trigger possibly getting shot at, instead a stupid car blocked the rest of her path that's when one of the men grabbed her hair, knocking her down to her knees as she tried to fight back.

Sarah didn't wish to go to the comets party in LA, it would have been the biggest party ever, being that it was in LA.. Though, she was to drained from work. Working 16 hour days with if she was lucky a day off. As of late she slept in the basment of the buidling she worked in. Those times when she worked to late and was far to tired to drive home, the basement was the perfect place to sleep in and never get disturbed. Till her friend came down to tell her it was time to wake up.

Sarah had slept for a few days, waking up totally refreshed and having no idea how long she had been sleeping. When she emerged to go to the bathroom, there was no one in the building. At first she thought, ok it's late at night, no one is here anyway. That thought went away when she saw the sun outside the windows. Maybe it's suday then? No one works here on Sundays.

After she freshened up a little bit, walked down the lobby, the elevators still worked, so again, she thought nothing of it. Till she got outside. Not a soul in sight..

"I am still in LA... Right?"

Course there was no answer, she walked down the street a little way. Still nothing. This was nothing like LA she knew, at this point she was a freaked. Got into her car and drove for a little bit up and down streets. Hopeing to find someone, anyone. Sarah did. She saw someone, a man, coming out from the library. First she was stunned to see him, following him to some gas station making sure he was real and not some illusion played by her mind.

Stopping at the station and still watching him, her blue eyes filled with tears as she realized he was for real. Stepped out of the car, wearing shorts and a small low cut t-shirt. Golden brown hair braided down her back. Cautiously she walked up to the man, wasn't totally sure as to what she was going to say. But whatever it was, she was sure it was going to be lame.

"Excuse me... But, do you know what happened out here? I-I was asleep and I have no idea what day it is or anything..."

Sarah knew that comets had strange effects on the world, but never would she have thought of this. Waited for the mans answer, looking behind her in hopes to find more people emerging from somewhere... Anywhere.. But there was none. Turning her gaze back to the man, thankful that he was still standing there.

Oliver Winchester, III:

A drive around the streets of the small town show signs of businesses looted, so there had to be survivors someplace, but no sign of anyone out and around.

After a hour or so Oliver gave up and continued to LA figuring that with it's population density there's a bigger chance of finding someone alive there.

He reaches the outskirts of the city then exits the freeway after using the massive bumper of the armored car to push a car out of his way.

Now he's driving the local streets with his bright headlights on, the 4-way emergency flashers going and occasionally blowing the horn, all to try and attract attention.

Ana ~

Ana bit into one of the guys, while punching the other one in his groin. After the one she bit let go, she kicked him in the groins, sending them both down onto their knees whimpering inbetween cussing screams.

Ran to her car and drove off for LA, without any supplies. Stuff she would just have to get in LA once she got there. She thought she had heard what sounded like an Armoured truck crushing and pushing cars out of the way. But by the time she got to where the sounds were, it was gone.

With that she drove off, leaving the two guys craddling their groins on the ground. The half tank of gas that she had got her to the out skirts of LA, it wasn't close enough enough to any gas stations so she drove the car till it fully died on her. Leaving her stranded and walking the rest of the way.

Hearing that vehicle again as she walked the streets of emptiness, turning just in time to see an armoured vehicle turn onto the street she was on and coming in her direction. To scared to move, partly relived to see some life, mostly scared to find out what was behind the wheel of that truck. Stood frozen for a few moments as it got closer and closer.

Oliver Winchester, III:

His head was swiveling side to side looking into empty store windows fpr any sign of life, but so far not a person to be found, although some broken windows showed that some were, or at least had been, alive and around somewhere.

He turned another corner continuing toward the center of the city, but about to give up for the day since night was falling, when he caught movement down the street from the corner of his eye.

His head spun to look down the street rather than to the sides and he saw a figure standing on the sidewalk near the next corner.

He flashed his headlights and blew the horn to get their attention should they somehow miss the sound of the armored car's engine on the silent street.

As he drew closer he saw that it was a woman and from her wide eyed look she was either very surprised, as he was, or she was scared.

Oliver coasted to a stop in the middle of the street about twenty feet from where she stood and got out of the truck. Walking to the front he stood by the fender, looked at her then scanned the area once again just in case.

Finally satisifed, "Hello. I'm damned glad to see you. You're the first person I've seen in days.
"My names Oliver and I'm from Northeast of Bakersfield.
"What's yours? Are you from LA?"

Ana

She backed away as the truck stopped, on the verge of running, at the same time it was life. The first life she has seen.. Well, despite the two men, but she didn't consider that has life now.

Sheilding her eyes some from the flashing lights, noticing some guy emerged from the truck, again, a small step back afraid of what he would do. He seemed bigger than the two guys she ran from earlier, then again, not every man can take from being hit in the groins.

"Ana..."

Cautiously spoke, almost unaware that she actually spoke with so much fear rising in her. Granted she was seriously relieved to see another..... sensible.. person alive..

"No, I just came from Kern Lake.... I... I think we may have just barely missed eachother... But, my car died a few miles back. Ran out of gas. Now I'm looking for a place to rest and eat for the night.."

Oliver Winchester, III:

"Well hello Ana," he smiles. "Nice to meet you. Well, to be honest, it'd be nice to meet just about anyone, but it's nice to meet you.
"I can offer a ride if you have a destination in mind. If not then a ride to where we can find a place for the night if you want.
"I stayed in a motel in Bakersfield last night, no one around of course.
"It'd be real nice to have someone to talk to tonight though.
"It's up to you."

He stands waiting for her to think it over and leans his hip on the fender as he waits, then scans the area again in case it's a trap or ambush of somekind.

"I don't really know LA that well, only been here a few times.
"Not really enough to have a desenation."

Almost afraid to take her eyes off him.. At this point afraid he'll just disapear and she would end up realizing that she was talking to herself.

"To be honest I'm not sure if I trust you... But at the same time.. I don't wish to be alone."

Smirked slightly,

"Hell, almost afraid to sleep for that matter.. might wake up to find out you were a dream."

Took a cautious step forward, noticing how he looked around.

"I've been walking these streets for hours, there isn't a soul around here. I keep expecting them to come out of sewers like rats, but nothing comes."

With that she looked away, towards the streets.

Oliver Winchester, III:

"Well I'd say the same about you Ana, except my dreams lately haven't been as nice you are to look at and talk to," he grins as he turns back to her again.

"I understand what you mean about trust. I keep waiting for a trap or ambush to be sprung to take what I've gather and the Brink's armored truck too.
"Tell you what. I'll take a chance if you will too. Let me open the passenger's door and if you want get in. If not that's okay and I understand, after all you're a woman and alone. I'll just go on my way, but will leave you something to defend yourself with, some food and water too.

Ana ~

"No!.."

She spoke kind of sharply towards... Oliver when he spoke of her leaving her alone.

"I mean, no don't leave me... I was already attacked in the last town, and I have no idea where I am now in this place. Also.. I.. ummm.. Don't really know how to use a gun... Never had to before and obviously wasn't planing on ever using one."

Shivered slightly at the thought of being here, alone, in LA in the middle of the night. When it was packed with people it was dangerous as all hell, now only god knows what lingered out here.

Walked slowly towards the passenger side of the truck, hesitantly passing him. After earlier she didn't want to turn her back on anyone.

"..... And thank you."

IC: Peter Freebourne

Peter Freebourne did not need to go far to find a gas station. He barely turned the corner and he found a once again littered gas station. Peter saw a empty spot with the right brand of gas and slowly moved the car against the gas pump.

He looked around again and saw nobody at all. The late afternoon sun had decked the gas station in an almost surreal light.
Peter looked at the handgun at the dashboard and made sure he had it close...just incase......

Taking the handle of the pump he started filling the car and he would make sure it was full. He had also brought along 4 spare empty gas bottles that he would fill with gas, just in case.

"Excuse me... But, do you know what happened out here? I-I was asleep and I have no idea what day it is or anything..."

Peter almost dropped the gas handle fumbling it as he turned. It was a soft feminine voice, startling him from his thoughts. It was a young lady, around his age he summised, she was very pleasant to look at and she looked scared. Peter saw she had tears in her eyes. Quite literally calming his wits down he felt compelled to answer her in a calm manner.

"Its so good to meet someone finally, someone normal. Thank the Lord for that. I don't know much, I was here in LA getting supplies and looking for survivors myself. Its Monday afternoon," Peter said softly.

He put the pump handle back and turned around and leaned on the car hood looking at her. She was wearing shorts and a small low cut t-shirt with Golden brown hair braided down her back.

"What's your name, sweetie, and I am glad your safe. Some of the things I have seen today has come out of a bad horror movie, but it's damn real. And hon, don't cry, you're safe now. Tell me how you survived the comet. Call me Peter as well," Peter said.

He looked at her sparkling blue eyes awaiting her answer.

Oliver Winchester III:

Oliver chuckles at her "No." and then the explaination as he gets back into the Brink's armored car again. He leans over and opens the passenger door lock and when Ana's in, the door's closed and locked, "Well I'll be teaching you how to shoot as well as care for firearms. I may need you for backup and if anything happens to me at least you'll know how to defend and protect yourself.
"Listen, we have a couple of hours, how about if we go to the Public Library and see if we can find out anything about what the hell's happened?"

Sarah ~

Sarah was watching this Paul guy a little closer, but so far he was posing not threat.

"Monday? It's Monday.."

Having this confused and shocked look on her face,

"Damn, well..... I was sleeping.. Since like the day of the Comet. Work has this 17 story building and I have been working awful hours."

"So, I sometimes ended up in the basement to sleep a few hours instead of going home. Guessing that's how I survived."

Looked up, met his eyes at the mention of her being safe. Safe from what? And is Sarah really safe from him? For now, he was the only she had.... It was him or nothing.. Least he wasn't ugly or anything.

"It's been a long time since anyone has called me sweetie like that. But, my name is Sarah."

Ana ~

Slowly got into the truck, he wasn't bad looking at all. Though, she did have to watch him. Hopeing that he'll keep his groins under control. So far, he seemed like a good guy. The only good one she has met beyond those two creeps.

As he got into the drivers seat, speaking of teaching her how to handle and care for a gun. That slightly freaked her out, mostly because she hated them with a passion. Though, this was soooo not the place or time to be hating something that could save her life.

"Wish I knew how to use and had one earlier.... I can only hope they won't be following me for revenge..."

It was spoken softly, as if she was in some distant thought of what happened.

"Yea, the library sounds good. Though, I don't think we'll really find much. Seeing how those that did survive were hidden from whatever happened. And those that didn't survive...."

"Just think whatever we find will be of before the comet is all."

"So, I sometimes ended up in the basement to sleep a few hours instead of going home. Guessing that's how I survived."

Peter listened to her explaination and nodded when she finished.

"It's been a long time since anyone has called me sweetie like that. But, my name is Sarah."

Peter smiled at her and replied;

"Heya Sarah. Seems like anyone who was underground or asleep or hell even in a coma like me survived whatever happened. This morning I awoke from a coma to an empty hospital...."

Peter told Sarah about his 'adventures' and the rather pallid church event. As he finished he said;

"And that's a nice name you have Sarah, If you want we can team up together. Don't worry I will be the perfect gentleman. No need to be scared or cautious of me. I have been in a coma for 5 years or there abouts and if I survived not having sex in that time, I can survive your good looks."

Peter smiled at her and walked around the car and took the empty gas bottles opening up the caps.

"You can decide about what you want to do. If you want to go at it alone, I will give you the handgun and ammo to go with it......If you want to come with me I am on my way out of LA. For some bad reason I don't want to be in LA when darkness falls. Your decision," he said as he filled one bottle at a time at the pump.

It was at this point that Peter heard in the close distance a deep sounding engine and it was coming closer.....

Meanwhile on the Moon......

The Luna I Mission had left Earth 2 long months ago. The Mission was manned by 4 people, 2 women 2 men, the International Space Agency had sent this mission to scout for a future mining site.

And now they were stranded, Houston, NORAD, even the Pentagon was strangely silent. To the four astronauts this was beginning to add up.

All this started when the comet enveloped Earth in it's tail as it passed. The four astronauts had watched the event and taken pictures and measurements and readings. The Comet had missed the moon by a mere distance.

So now they deduced, they were safe from whatever the Comet did. With rations, water and oxygen at critical levels the four astronauts looked at all there options and decided to return to Earth.

What would they find? Where they the last people alive?
