A knock came to the door of his chambers and a guard opened the door to poke his head inside. "Lord Wryn, Azahara is here to see you."
Wryn sighed and glanced out the window to the courtyard before the castle where his army was preparing to head into Illyania lands and crush the forces of Deamon Sargeris. Sargeris had been trying to invaded and take over Wryn's homelands of Al'ar. Wryn had spent years trying to tell his father King Lore that they needed to strike down Sargeris and put and end to the war.
For a long time King Lore refused his son's warrior ambitions. There was a way to peace without war, but one day Sargeris attacked the capital. It only then became clear to Lore that Sargeris needed to be put down once and for all. The burden of war fell upon the heir to the throne, Prince Wryn.
Wryn was a warrior of the highest rank. He had trained his entire life to be perfect. He had been giving the power of the Keystones giving him the power to travel the Gateways. Gateway were portals through other worlds, to quickly move from place to place. One lapse of focus and a person could find themselves trapped on another world, in permanent exile.
Wryn sighed and said, "Let her in."
It was no secret that Azshara wanted to become queen. The only was to become Queen however, was to become Wyrn's mate. Since he was heir to the throne and his father already having a queen. Their people were very loyal and mated for life, however the female had to try much harder to gain the affections of a male than of other cultures.
Wryn was not interested in Azshara at all, for he knew her intent was false. Still the girl kept coming onto him and he had to admire that she wasn't willing to give up.
She came into the room with a smile, her arms spread as if to embrace him. Wryn just eyed her and she lowered her arms. "Ah Prince Wryn. Looking as handsome as ever before your big adventure."
"I go not to adventure. I go to battle and to death. It is not something to celebrate." He told her.
She frowned, "But it is for the good of the kingdom. It will ensure our safety."
"Indeed."
"It is a noble and honorable deed, I would expect nothing less from your actions. When you return from this, your father will surely step aside and give you the throne." She flounced over to him and put a hand on his armored chest. "You will need a beautiful and loyal queen by your side."
Wryn smirked and took her hand off his chest. "You are too forward Azshara. I've told you over and over again I do not wish you to pursue me. I fear your desire for the throne is more your reasoning for my affections than true feeling. I'm sorry." He lifted his helmet off the table nearby and tucked it under one arm. "I must go Azshara."
Then he pushed passed her and walked out toward the front of the castle.
He passed the throne room on the way out and paused. He glanced toward the mighty seat and saw his brother Vyryn on the throne, his fingers trailing over the patterns carved in the gold of the throne's frame. "Brother?"
Vyryn looked up slowly and gave a slow smirk. "Ah brother, king, leader, warrior, better." There was mocking tones in his voice.
Wryn sighed, his brother was jealous of Wryn's power. He was jealous that he was heir and that he had the love of the people, and most of all the attentions of Azhara. His brother was a very jealous man, though Wryn had no desire to be King. He had told his father over and over to give the throne to Vyryn. Vyryn was a noble mage, and much smart than Wryn at least in Wryn's eyes. Wryn was a warrior and he was good at it. He had no place being the leader of a nation.
"I am not your better brother." Wryn said walking cautiously toward his brother.
"Aren't you?" Vyryn straightened, "Father seems to think so. Because you were born mere hours before me you automatically become king, you get all the favor, all the praise. I live off your scraps."
Wryn shook his head slowly, "Vyryn, you know I have beseeched father to give you the throne. I do not want it."
Vyryn scoffed, "As if he would buy that. No brother there is only one way I will ever get the throne and the respect I deserve. You must disappear."
Wryn shrugged, "I don't know what else to say brother. I must go though. We should talk when I return."
"Ah yes, when you return once again the glorious hero. Farewell then brother." Vyryn shimmered and vanished.
Wryn wished there was something he could do to make his brother feel better. Something to give his brother the glory and attention he so desires. There would be time for that when the kingdom was at peace. For now he had a army to lead.

Azhara was storming down the hall in order to see Wryn off. She loved to see him in his armor, and weapons, looking as glorious as any hero is the stories she had heard as a child. Wryn might not think her feelings were genuine, she did have her desires for him in the way that a woman can want a man. The idea of becoming queen was just so alluring though.
She jerked to a halt as Vyryn appeared before her, blocking her way suddenly. "Oh Lord Vyryn!" she gasped. Vyryn made her uneasy. The younger brother of Wryn seemed to look at her like a piece of meat, or a trophy. Plus his jealously gave him a dark side that frankly scared her.
"Running off to see the hero?" He asked, his gaze boring into her.
She looked down, "I was."
He put his hands on her cheeks and forced her to look at him. As badly as she wanted to jerk away she knew that it would only cause further trouble for her. "Why do you worship him so? What is it you see in him that begs your affections? He hates you, every moment he is forced to speak with you pains him. HE only wishes you away and yet you chase him. When I, I would welcome you with open arms and you do the same to me as he does to you."
She swallowed, "I see nobility in him. He is pure."
"And I am not?"
She paused for a long while, "No."
He stepped back and snorted, "Fine. I suppose you are right. But if I were you, I'd start rethinking your life. You wont be able to chase my brother for long and soon you'll have to make a choice."
Azshara blinked and stepped toward him. "What do you mean? Did you have a vision of Wryn's battles? Have you seen harm coming to him?"
Vyryn sneered at her, "You care so much. Soon you shall see." Then he
shimmered and vanished.
What was he planning, Azshara wondered.

"WE HAVE A READING SAMANTHA!" Josh cried from the keystone. The large obelisk object was made of solid stone covered in unknown markings. They had found it in the Egyptian desert four months ago and for weeks thought it was only a stone. Until the markings began to glow and computer equipment went crazy.
Again the stone was glowing and humming softly. The computers were tracking an atmospheric event thirty miles from them. They had not been able to catch one of these events yet as they happened randomly. Always they were within 50 miles of the lab, but always disappeared before they could get to one.
"Where is it?" Samantha cried.
"Thirty miles, just outside of Palmdale."
"Do we have a camera there?"
"No."
"Damnit. Ok mark it on the map."
The stone suddenly went dark again and the computers went silent.
Samantha went to the map and traced her fingers around the marked events. Whatever was causing these events she wanted to see them. To understand and figure it all out. The Egyptians had hinted that the keystone was a way to open a gateway to other worlds. But if they couldn't track an event or event witness it they would win noble prizes.

Wryn stepped from the Gateway and into Sargeris lands. His army followed suit behind him ready to strike at anything that might be waiting. That was the problem with gateways, you had no idea what might be waiting on the other side. The lands were cold, and a thin coat of frost seemed to instantly take to the armies blades.
From the ridge up ahead an army of figures rose. Wryn narrowed his eyes and saw the leader on a horse out in front. "Sargeris." He whispered. He rose his arm and commanded. "Flanking positions! Get ready to end this here my friends."
Then a voice called over the ridge. "Welcome Wryn! I see you've convinced your father that I need to be stopped." Sargeris's voice was colder than the lands he came from.
Wryn stepped forward. "I will end the war for my people today."
"Then is seems we have something in common."
Then at once both armies began racing toward each other. A clash of sword and shield echoed across the field until Wryn and his army stood over the bodies of the enemy. Wryn had managed to pin Sargeris to the ground, his blade ready to behead the foe.
"You think you've won Wryn? You are but a child. Right now my true army assaults Al'ar." Sargeris taunted.
"Lies you beast."
It was then that a scout came up with a man behind him on horseback. "Lord Wryn, we must go! Sargeris's army reaches the castle!"
Wryn jerked away from Sargeris who took the chance to roll away and laugh. "You see? You are nothing but a child and not fit to lead a group a children, let alone a whole kingdom."
Wryn roared and swung his blade at him, but the coward was gone.
The army raced home, frantic and praying that they would find something left to save. When the stepped through the Gateway they could see smoke billowing from the castle. Vyryn met them at the gates, a solemn look upon his face.
"Vyryn!" Wryn called, "Brother is everything alright! Let us through we will fight Sargeris and slay him where he stands."
Vyryn shook his head. "I'm sorry brother, but it's already over. We managed to push the enemy out but they've done their damage already."
"What damage?" Wryn grabbed his brother by the shoulders.
"Father has been slain." Vyryn said softly.
Wryn backed away as if he'd been hit a mighty blow. He fell to his knees, his breath hard to catch. Vyryn put a hand on his cheek, "I'm sorry brother. I wish there was good news, but I only have more bad news."
Wryn looked up, tears forming falling down his cheeks. "What more?"
"The people say you've abandoned them. That it was you that caused this."
Wryn jumped to his feet, sorrow being replaced by rage. "Outrageous. Let me speak to them, I will make them understand."
Vyryn shook his head. "They demand your exile. They say you took the army away for no reason but to let the enemy invade. I fear we cannot let you enter for fear of a rebellion. Brother this has been a most horrible day. If we are to salvage the kingdom, you must been banished, here and now."
Wryn shook his head, wanting to protest. His brother was the smart one though, and if anyone could keep the peace Vyryn would know how. If his brother said he must be exiled then it was true. Vyryn would never lie to him, they were family and Wryn's exile would hurt Vyryn just as much.
Wryn trembled and nodded, "Very well. You know best brother. Perhaps I was too much a fool."
"Not a fool brother. You had your reasons, and it was a good idea. Sargeris just...he caught us with a mistake." He knelt and looked into Wryn's eyes. "I will use my magic to make sure you are sent to someplace pleasant for exile. You deserve that much my brother."
Wryn nodded.

Josh had his foot to the floor, the pedal mashed as Samantha's pickup bared through the desert. They finally caught a break. The artifact had been active for nearly twenty minutes and still counting. They could finally get to see the result of all the computer distortion.
As they got closer they could see a funnel could in the distance, but no debris seemed to fly around it, nor did it move. It fact except for lightning and the spinning of the vortex it seemed completely still.
Josh started to slow, but Samantha scolded him and forced him to keep his foot to the medal. Then as they got within 100 yards to the vortex it abruptly receded into the sky. Josh felt a pang of sorrow, they were so close and yet so far. But at least they had seen....
There was a crash and a grunt, as a body landed on the hood of the truck, then bounced off the windshield and fell off the car. Josh brought the car to a stop and turned to Samantha with a look of horror on his face. "Oops."
