I get that the curiosity is the fun of it, and I'd ask the artist if they were there.

In general though, I get a big WTF. Ideally art should be able to clearly speak for itself. The art and the explanation are separate.

For the individual it can be good to get convoluted things down and outside to critically appraise, but that's for the artist themselves, not the audience.

I'm very practical. Art that doesn't communicate clearly is flawed in execution or not hooked up to any terminal in my brain that it can plug into, which is okay. Food that doesn't taste good, doesn't taste good to me but might be the best thing ever for someone else. Music that is discordant needs to know that harmony makes the brain happy and discord is a tension elevator but not necessarily an excuse to screw up music.

You can't just make sloppy food and say it's "rustic."

You can't play out of tune music and say it's "passionate."

You can't make art that is obscure and say it's "deep"

I mean, you can, but I'll be headed to the door or making fun of it.

I'm... actually really insulted by this. That's literally the exact opposite of what art should do. Art is provocative. Art forces the viewer to ask questions. Art hides it's meaning in symbolism and layers of social commentary- that's the reason that it can be interpreted differently by different viewers. As an artist, your job is bear your soul and create something that speaks to others, not in a clear-cut 'welp that's what it is and that's all it is' manner, in a 'this is how I interpret this' manner. That is what makes art great. If there aren't layers- if we could just look at the Sistine Chapel and say it was a depiction of Biblical scenes without knowing all the political and social commentary within it- without seeing the brain in god or knowing that several of the demons were portraits of church officials- without TO THIS DAY digging up new information, new layers, then it wouldn't be half the work that it is. Art, true art, isn't defined by technical skill. It's defined by the very things that you hate about it.

You're making fun of pictures? Generally I try to only make fun of things that I can do better than. Seeing as how art is subjective, it would be difficult to make fun of. Were you making fun of authors as well as artists? Because you know that even paintings that you think are "bad" people spend days or even weeks on. That they are labors of love. That people lose sleep and don't eat and let their social lives go to create the art that you think you can just make fun of.
