Al'ika breathed deeply and nodded. "Two people on guard for the rest of the night," she said. "We don't know what we're up against with the roar, and I want to be cautious. Two people."

Al'ika practically clung to Keth in her sleep, still unable to fall asleep, but holding onto him soothed her enough to close her eyes.

Morning came, and camp was packed up quickly after they ate. As they worked their way down the mountain, they came to a spot where trees were snapped like twigs.

Al'ika mutely pointed it out to Issak. "What is that?" she asked in their link. "I've never seen anything like that before. . ."

"My best guess is a manticore, but I've never seen one myself," he said, getting ready just in case.

The form began to circle closer and closer, and the lionlike being soon came into full view, its spiked tail flailing about as it hovered.

The beast finally spotted then, and with a swish of its tail, sent a volley of spikes at them, splintering a log they were hiding behind.

Al'ika couldn't help but draw out her bow and arrows from her pack before knocking a couple and firing, ducking immediately.

Al'ika shot another couple of arrows, these with fire, before ducking again. "Get down," she hissed at everyone else.

Al'ika's arrows hit, and the beast bellowed its near deafening roar. It landed and began pacing like a cat staling its prey before launching itself at Norro. Jep launched himself in the way and stabbed it a few times before being batted away.

Al'ika kept firing arrows, but she remained standing up this time. Once she ran out of arrows, she drew her sword.

Issak struck the thing with summoned lightning, and Keth took a chunk out of its side. It was still a very long way from going down.

Al'ika began forming a huge fireball, whispering the incantation softly, her eyes always on the manticore. When it was to her liking, she launched it.

Al'ika attempted to jump and failed, falling. She got up the best she could and threw another fireball, slumping against the log.

The fireball went wide and caught part of the clearing on fire. Brom and Keth were scoring hits, but taking a lot in return. Jep had managed to slice one of its arteries and it began to look wobbly.

Swearing, Al'ika got up and stabbed the manticore, trying to not get hit by any appendage. She created another fireball and shoved it up toward it.
