Kat managed to take someone's foot off wit a lucky blow, and the group's momentum led them towards freedom. They broke free into the open air of the forest and out of the must of the castle.Keth took off at a run, followed by his children. "Get free, then village?" he asked Al'ika.

Al'ika nodded, also running. "Let's go, I'm not sure what else could be waiting for us," she said. Her thoughts went to I'eie, but she shook them from her mind. "Let's go!"

Over land and through the trees they wan, until finally they reached the river that was halfway between Al'ika's home and the castle. As they rested, Keth stood after taikng a cool drink. As he shouldered his weapon, an arrow flew out of the bushes and stuck into his shoulder. Five woodsmen came out and their leader menaced, "Let her go, beast!"

"Flish!" Al'ika seethed. She drew her sword. "He is my friend, do not hurt him or his children or so help me heavens you will be nothing but ribbons!" Her sarcastic tone was back. "Listen, we need sanctuary. We just escaped from Ashglow's castle- don't ask me why I don't have I'eie, I don't want to talk about it. Right now, we need sanctuary, medicine, food, and ale." Her gaze looked at the familiar woodsmen.

Flish looked taken aback for a minute. He looked over to his men, back to the odd party, then shook his head to clear it. "Ok, Al'ika, I trust you. Let's go and see the mayor. It's getting dark soon and the worgs will be out soon."

Al'ika nodded. "Thank you," she said. She quickly bandaged Keth's shoulder and smiled reassuringly at the kids. Her body was about ready to collapse, two days under Xur's care was starting to wear on her. She gritted her teeth and continued on, following Flish.

Keth saw Al'ika begin to falter and picked her up in a fireman's carry, wincing at her weight on his shoulder but working through the pain. The village came into sight, and the guards stood to attack at the sight. Flish yelled, "Let us in, fools! They need aid!" and they stood down, one rushing off to get the village priest, Hallowbrook.

Al'ika smiled at the sight of the friendly old priest. "Hallowbrook," she whispered. She felt herself being laid down. "Never thought I'd see your old face again," she joked. "And yet, here I am, once again." She smiled at Keth. "Thank you," she whispered.

Keth fell over, the arrow finally overcoming his burst of adrenaline. "You welcome," he said. Hallowbrook stripped off Al'ika's armor, and upon seeing the tattoo, looked over at the insignia on Keth's armor. "Is there somehing you wish to tell me, Al'ika?" he said sternly. "Start from the beginning."
"I think you should," said the mayor from the doorway. "Tell me everything." Al'ika was nude and injured in front of everyone of power in the town and her new friend, Keth.

"Can I at least be covered, please!" Al'ika barked. When she was covered, she began. "Right. I went to Ashglow's castle to retrieve I'eie- I'm getting there, Mayor, please calm down- and we fought. I was overcome and placed in the dungeons. Keth-" she nodded toward the orc in the corner, "had taken me under his wing so I would be protected. His mark upon me was a mark of protection. Without this, I doubt I would've escaped at all. I was tortured, trying to get me to serve Ashglow. While there, I saw I'eie." She took a deep breath. "I'eie is a slave of Ashglow, but she does not wish to be freed. She has been, as she put it to me, 'enlightened'. She would die for Ashglow, she's been that brainwashed. She's not the same." Tears filled her eyes. "She is convinced I betrayed you, Mayor," she confessed. "I'm sorry, Mayor, but. . . I tried. She'd rather humiliate me and betray us than to admit that she's a slave. Keth had told me he'd help me escape if I would help him free his children, which Ashglow had kept captive in order to make him serve him."

The mayr sat down in stunned melancholy and wept. Hallowbrook comforted him and then went about treating Al'ika's wounds, occasionally looking over at Keth. "You don't look very bad at all. Whoever treated you in there must have been a skilled healer." He finished with her and removed KEth's armor, placing his hands on him and chanting a recuperative spell. "Does that feel better, Orc?" he asked. "My apologies, Keth." he corrected himself.

"Keth took care of me," Al'ika admitted. "Earth salve." She got up and dressed, wincing slightly. She walked over to the Mayor. "Mayor. . . I'm sorry," she whispered. "I'm so sorry. . . Please forgive me for not doing more, I wish I could have." She knelt before him. "What can I do to help?"

"You did all you could," he choked, standing. "Rest up you've been through a lot, my girl. Stay with Keth and care for him while he recovers, that's an order." he turned to Keth. "I don't suppose your son could take up watch with us and your daughter help with chores?" Keth said, "Ok, Chief," and returned to recuperating. Soon Keth and Al'ika were left alone in the church ward room.

Al'ika sighed heavily and looked at the orc. "We did it," she whispered. She felt like she had aged. She looked at Keth's wound. "Flish used to court me," she admitted. "He's always been very protective of me." She helped the healing process along and slumped in a chair, tired. A few tears rolled down her face.

"As long as you and your family help out and don't betray our trust, you're welcome here," Al'ika said. "For me, I'm here until I go out again. There's always another mission. I usually don't get much time to myself." She stretched a little. "I'll probably go back," she admitted. "Even though she doesn't want to, I have to get I'eie out. For her father's sake, if nothing else." A low growl emitted from her throat.

Keth frowned a little. "Not what Keth meant." he said. He saw a shadow quickly drift by the window outside and sat bolt upright. "Something fishy," he said. "Smell bad human who took people."

Al'ika noticed the shadow too. "Ashglow. He knows," she whispered. She quickly donned her armor and grabbed her sword. "I'm sorry, Keth, I have to," she told him. "Stay here, you have children." She kissed the orc passionately. "Thank you," she told him before walking out of the church and issued a sorcerer's challenge. Flames spread, encircling him.

Keth stood. "That not Ashglow, and Keth going with you." he picked up a hand axe from a weapon rack and stood. "He went that way, out of town," he said. When they reached the gates, no one had seen anything unusual.

Al'ika sighed and blew her hair out of her face. "And this is why I dislike other sorcerer's on my turf," she growled. "No one sees anything unusual." She gestured back toward the church. "Let's head back, Keth," she said.

Keth looked forward. "No magic, he on foot." He set off down the forest path, determined to catch the culprit.

"Tracks and smell," Keth said, rushing forward. "He going for river so scent not carry. You know area, lead on," he said.

Al'ika nodded and she sent out an earth spell, keeping his movements. She leaped over the stream and headed east, the scent still fresh. "We're gaining," she said.

The woods grew thicker and thicker, until they began to enter a familiar area Al'ika had been to many times in her childhood. She knew that a certain cabin was ahead and who she would find when she got there.
