"We'll wait until nightfall. Pillagers usually don't come in until way late at night, and typically drunk too," Al'ika said.

"I don't think drunk Flish would be a good idea," she said. "That's how your father's hay caught on fire in the first place."

The rest of the afternoon went smoothly, and by the time they left, everyone was well rested and disguised. "It's two more days to the town," said Bim. "And lots of patrols follow the main roads regularly. They get a lot smarter the closer you get."

"We're pretty smart ourselves," Al'ika said. "Thank you for your hospitality, Bim. It's very much appreciated."

Bim nodded at them before heading back inside and bedding down for the night. Keth looked deep in thought. "Want we should risk the goblins or the patrols?'

"Depends. I'd much rather deal with patrols than goblins," Al'ika confessed. "Only because I actually want a bit of a challenge."

Flish nodded in agreement. "If I'm going to kick some ass, I want it to be worth it." They began trekking along in the starlit darkness.

"Fine, take all the fun out of it," he sulked. The capital was looking closer and more menacing the closer they got to its lit gates.

"Well, yes, but you also don't fight well when you're drunk. Or do I need to remind you about the time that Jorr Natherson nearly killed you because you went to the next village over, got drunk, got banned for life from their tavern, and you were trying to be menacing to an old man?" Al'ika asked, taking a swig from her flagon.

Al'ika chuckled, still walking. She kissed Flish's cheek. "You know I'm teasing, right?" she asked him softly.

"You're also completely right. Sometimes I think I need you to keep me in check just as much as you need me to sneak around and stab things."

Al'ika chuckled. "Sometimes. But it's mostly the singing," she teased. "Honestly, you don't sing. Just like I don't dance."

"Big tracks, lots of goblin tracks with them, with human tracks with drag marks," he said. "Going that way," he pointed.

"Ogres are probably taking patrols off the roads and using them as pinatas," Al'ika said. "What should we do, besides be very careful?"

Flish got down for a closer look. "The footprints don't look armored," he said. :That changes things a bit."

"That does," Al'ika agreed. "So, what should we do? Kill a few ogres on the side before making it into the city?"

"It's the least we an do," said Isep. Keth unsheathed his blade and began to walk point, tracking their quarry along the way. They began to smell roasting meat and smoke ahead, with lots of goblin chanting.

"Ugh, goblin ceremonies," Al'ika grumbled. She listened to the chanting. "I can't make out what they're saying," she whispered.
