Fast Fingers...

Mac got up from the table and carried her dishes to the sink, not looking at Tom. Wedding? Marriage? Her life was taking turns she had never planned on. She loved Tom, he knew it, she knew it. She could hear the but on the end of that thought. But was she ready to get married? Mac had no clue, she just prayed no one brought the subject up to her.

"Let's get this show on the road. The sooner we get started, the sooner we get it over with." Jack rose from the table, and Mac followed him out of the room, with Tom and Sara close behind. They gathered in the family room around the large blackboard. Mac just hoped everything turned out alright. She was worried for both Tom and Desiree. Mac had a gut feeling. Something just didn't feel right, but she put it out of her head for the moment. She was probably just nervous about Tom and the M word. She had more important things to worry about at the moment. They were going to catch a killer.

Tom

When everyone was in the room, Tom started to pull out the equipment he had picked up. As he worked, his eyes kept returning to Mac, wanting to tell her how much he loved her but knowing this was not the time. Oh, but there was something he needed to tell her! "Kenzie, I spook with my friend when I picked this stuff up and he is very, very interested in us becoming partners in his security company." She appeared pleased with the news but Tom could tell something wasn't right, something was bothering her. He would talk to her before they left. Right now, it was show time.

Tom pulled out what appeared to be a radar detector. "Des, sit this on your dash. It is a camera and a microphone. Its got a wide angle lens so we will be able to see anything happening in your car, so if you go anywhere, you drive, Okay?" She nodded yes, she understood. "Dad, Marcus, here is the monitor for the unit. I will have the audio only so if you see something I need to know about, radio me." He gave them a handset for the powerful walkie talkie. "I'm also going to put under your rear bumper, a GPS device. We can track your car anywhere, so don't get seperated from your car."

Next he pulled out what appeared to be jewelry boxes. "After your dressed, we will see which piece works best with your outfit, but each piece of this jewelry has a wire in it so we can hear and record everything he says. These are so much better than what they give us at work, even if you were to get patted down, you'd be fine." He picked up one of the pieces and when into the next room and whispered "How are you reading me?" his voice clearly heard from the monitoring equipment.

"One last thing, Des, and I hope you won't need it but put this on your key ring. It looks like your typical remote control for door locks and such. Its really two things. One is an emergency call if you are in a situation where you can't speak. And second, its a mini stun gun. Its not as powerful as the tazers we use on the force but it will knock a man down long enough for you to get away. Keep your keys in your hands anytime your not driving. See how it works? Ok, thats what I've got. Des, how is this supposed to go down again. Take us thru it one more time."

Tom took a seat next to Mac who immediatly slid in close so he could wrap his arm around her.

Desiree had listened closely to Tom's instructions and nodded numbly. The closer this was getting the more nervous I was getting and I had to stop. "Be proffesional, Des!," I told myself sharply,"Your a cop, now start acting like one."

"Okay," I said at his question, taking a deep breath,"I let Barton know that I was going to clean out Marcus' desk and then go to the coffee shop. I made it seem like it was a mourning process I had to go through. He said he would come and meet me at the coffe shop and 'lend a listening ear' if I wanted. I agreed but, if I know Barton, he will probably jump the gun and show up at the precinct."

I looked over at Marcus for confirmation and I saw him nod his head, his face not a very happy one.

Tom started to take the survellience equipment he was taking with him and get it hooked up in his SUV. It took several trips to get everything installed to his satisfaction. He checked the walkie-talkie as well as his cell phone, verifying with Dad inside that the readings on his instruments was the same as theirs read inside. On more than one trip inside, he had caught a look in Mac's eyes. It was the look of a cornered animal. He knew before he left, he would need to reassure her that everything was going to be alright.

Satisfied that everything was working as it should, he knew he no longer had any excuse to put it off. Stepping back into the house, he looked for Mac and didn't see her. He breathed a sigh, wondering where she had gone. He talked to Marcus and Dad for a minute, putting off what he knew he had to do.

"Okay, I know what needs to be done and I know the reason why but I have to say that I don't like it one bit. I know I have said that before but this time I mean it. That is my fiancee that is going into harms way and I want her to come back in one piece so I ask you to give me your word that she will come back to me unharmed. Promise me that Tom, please."

Tom Ashford

"Marcus, you've done this to long to expect me to make that exact promise to you. You know I love her too. She's my baby sister and I can promise not to take my mind off what I am there for for even a moment today. She couldn't have a backup who will watch any closer for signs of trouble, and that includes you. At the first hint of anything going wrong, I will be there. I won't have to think about what anything I do today will do to my career because I've already made up my mind to leave the force to work with Mac in the private secture." Tom finished speaking but could see Marcus was still not totally convinced.

"We haven't gotten much of a chance to know each other yet, so you don't really know that much about me. Before I joined the force, I had a position with one of the militaries special forces unit. I've been under fire before, I know I can handle it. What I know of you, I like. I plan for us to become friends, hunting and fishing buddies, when we can get you two out of the city." Tom paused, watching Marcus's face. "One more thing you should know. While I can't promise Des won't get hurt, I will promise to be there and if I'm there, I will take a bullet before I let anything happen to her!"

Just as he finished speaking, Tom caught a glimse of movement from the corner of his eye and turned to see Mac running out the door. Shit, that wasn't the speech he had been rehearsing for her to hear. Marcus took his hand as he stood up. "I still wish you could promise what I ask, but that is as good a promise as I'm likly to get today. Thanks" Marcus said. Tom didn't want to be rude but he had to catch Mac. He had to talk to her and it was almost time to leave. He headed out the door, not seeing her as he stood on the porch. Tom stepped off the porch to see if she had gone to the barn. Quickly moving across the yard, he stepped into the darkness of the barn, the smells familiar as he searched the dark corners for Mac. Where was she now?

She huddled in the hay, tears running down her face. She couldn't do it! Not again. She couldn't, wouldn't let something happen to someone she loved.

"Mac?"

Tom's voice made her jump, but Mac knew she couldn't hide from him. "I'm up here." Was that really her voice? That timid, weak whisper?

It didn't take him long to climb the ladder to the hayloft. His eyes searched the dark shadows, lighting on her. A sob broke in her throat and she crawled into his arms. He rocked her gently, his hand buried in her hair, holding her head to his chest.

"You know I have to do this."

"I know," she sniffled, "This is all my fault. If I had left it alone, if I hadn't become a theif, none of this would have happened. Marcus would be safe, Des would be safe."

"But I wouldn't know you, and I would have fallen in love with you, and I wouldn't be holding you in my arms at this very moment." He tilted her chin up gently with his finger, his eyes searching to what seemed the very depths of her soul.

Mac saw something spark in his eyes, and his head bent to hers. At the first brush of his lips, something burst inside her, and their passion erupted. It was swift and fierce, like a summer storm. They moved in a dance as old as time, their bodies saying things their mouths could not. When it was over, Mac clung to him, her breathing harsh. "Come back to me, Tom."

Tom

Tom couldn't explain what had just happened. One second he was cradling her in his arms, telling her everything would be ok, the next, their bodies were locked together in a passion he had never felt before. As they cuddled together in the hay enjoying the after glow, he tried to reassure her. "Kenzie, as long as I draw breath, there is nothing in this world that will keep me from coming back to you." He reached down and tenderly cupped her chin in his hand, tilting her face up so he could look into her eyes. "I've said the words before, but until I met you, I didn't really know what they meant. I LOVE YOU, Mac, and I want to spend every day of the rest of my life with you. If there were any other way, I wouldn't be leaving her today, but we all have to get this out of our way before we can go forward."

Mac snuggled tight into his chest one last time, then pulled herself away as she started to straighten up her clothes. They walked hand in hand over to the ladder. She turned and placed her hands on Tom's wide chest and stood on her tiptoes to kiss the end of his nose. Tom could feel she wanted to say something so he didn't move. He smiled as he thought of all the times before when he knew a woman wanted to say something had been the signal it was time to go. Not this time, but it was going to have to be soon. It was time to head back to the city.

Mac looked up at him, knowing what she had to do. She couldn't tell him of course, he would try and stop her, he would worry about her, and he would be distracted from keeping an eye on Des. "I love you Tom. Just come back to me safe and in one piece."

He kissed her gently, and just held her for a moment. "It's time to go." Mac knew he wasn't going to make a promise he might not be able to keep. "I love you Mac."

Mac climbed down from the loft, with Tom close behind. Her plan was already forming in her head. She just had to put it into play.

OOC: Going out of town for a few days, I'll be back on Sunday.

Tom

Tom came down the ladder satisfied he had handled things well. He had a little extra spring in his step as he headed for the house to see what what keeping Desiree. They needed to get on the road if he was going to have time to get set up before she had her meeting.

Tom felt the tightening in his stomach as he thought about what was about to happen. They had everything covered that they could cover. You just never knew all the variables in a set-up like this. He pushed the dark thoughts back out of his mind. Everything would work out, it had too.

Desiree was standing in front of her closet looking into what was left hanging there. Most of the contents of the closet had been taken out, inspected and thrown down onto the bed. She was having a hard time deciding what to wear.

She knew that she needed to wear somthing attractive as she wanted to lure Barton but she was having a problem with dressing to sexily for anyone but Marcus.

Sighing, she decided that simple was best and chose a pair of black slacks that hugged her hips and legs enough to attract attention but not enough to leave nothing to the imagination. To complement it, she chose a long sleeved white blouse and left it open enough in front to show cleavage but not enough to flash anyone.

Looking at herself in the mirror she nodded in satisfaction. Anyone seeing her would think she was, indeed, in mourning for Marcus but Barton would still see a vibrant woman beneath the mourning appearance.

Taking a deep breath, she left her room and headed downstairs for the inspection of everyone.

Marcus sat there and looked around the room, wondering what was going to happen when Desiree left to meet with Barton and he was stuck here doing nothing at all but listen. He now hated himself for being injured as he had and wanted to be with Desiree more than anything. He then heard footsteps on the stairs and looked up to see Desiree walk down them and the first thing he noticed was what she was wearing and he knew that even though it was to get Barton's attention he didn't like it one little bit.

He got to his feet and was about to say something but knew that he shouldn't. Desiree's mind was set and he knew that once it was then he could do nothing at all to change it.

The first thing Desiree saw was the look on Marcus' face when he saw her and she knew he hated that she was dressing up to attract another man not to mention that other man was a killer.

Walking up to him, she put her arms gently around him and held him close for a moment, not saying anything, just letting him know that she knew how he felt.

Releasing him and kissing him gently before turning to Tom, she said,"So, lets get this over with. What's first, big brother?"

Mac sat next down next to Marcus, knowing she was going to need his help to pull of her plan. Desiree looked beautiful, and Mac could tell Marcus didn't like it one bit. She could understand. Des was going to meet a very dangerous man, and Tom was going with her.

She leaned close to Marcus, her voice nothing more than a whisper, "I brought all of you into this, and now they are going off like lambs to the slaughter. I have a plan, but I need your help."

Marcus turned and looked at Mac with a interested look on his face. He then looked at Desiree and Tom and saw that they were getting ready to leave and that they were more interested in what they were doing then turned back to Mac,
"You have just peeked my interest. What is your plan?"

"I'm going with them, and I'm going to watch over them. I'm going to find the killer and send Tom and Desiree back safe and sound," she swallowed, "I don't have all the details worked out, that's why I need you. Will you help me? Will you help me keep them safe?"

"Of course I will help you. I really don't want you going out there though to put yourself in danger but if you feel that you must then I can not stop you but I will do all that I can to help- just tell me how and I will do it."

Tom

While Marcus and Mac conspired, Tom and his sister were going thru things again, step by step. They had both been on enough things like this to know the best way to handle something unexpected was to know what the other planned to do. Desiree described the station where she expected Barton to catch up with her. She didn't think he would really try anything inside the station house, but she described it in as much detail as she could.

After they left the station was where their plan had weak links. Would they be in the same vehicle or their own? Would they go to the diner she planned for or would he try to take her somewhere else?

But even with all the variables, Tom felt sure he could take care of his sister. There were only the two of them to think of so he didn't have other thing to take his mind off what was important. He was glad Marcus and Mac would be here with the folks. Tom glansed over at them talking on the couch and something bothered him but he pushed it aside to deal with what had to be dealt with.

They finished going over everything and checked their watches. "We better say our goodbyes and get on the road." Tom said. Des nodded and they started back into the living room.

Mac was about to explain what she wanted to do, but Tom and Desiree chose that moment to enter the living room.

"It's time to leave." Tom stood looking down at Mac, and her stomach seemed to drop to the floor. It was her fault everyone is in so much danger, and it was her responsibility to get them out of it, even if it cost her her own life. She couldn't think about that now. She had to concentrate on setting her plan in action.

She stood from the couch and moved into Tom's arms, feeling them come around her, feeling his strength flow into her. "I love you." His arms seemed to tighten a little at her words. She couldn't seem to talk, her throat was clogged, but she pushed her emotions down. She had to concentrate on her plan.

While Tom and MacKenzie were saying good bye, Desiree went and knelt in front of Marcus. Reaching up to lovingly push a strand of his hair back into place, she smiled reassuringly.

"Don't worry, handsome," She said with more confidence than she felt. "We are going to go in there, get this done and get out. No fooling around and no heroics. Just good old fashioned police work."

Putting her arms around him, she gave him a long, sweet kiss before standing up and turning to Tom. "Lets get this over with. The sooner we do the sooner our lives get back to normal."

Tom

Feeling there was something strange about the way Mac had reacted to his hug, Tom quickly pushed the thought aside so he could focus on the task at hand. Kissing Kenzie one last time, he reached over to shake Marcus hand. Looking at them both, he promised, "This will all be over soon. Try not to worry to much, this is a good plan. It's going to work." He smiled, both to reassure them and kind of proud he had sounded so sure when the butterflies in his stomach were fluttering like crazy to get out.

Squeezing Mac's hand, Tom looked her in the eye and said, "Tonight we will take that walk we never got to take last night." Mistaking the look of sadness in Mac's eyes for fear, he turned and left the room. "I'll be in the truck when your ready, Des." he called over his shoulder, daring not look at Mac again, not trusting his feelings.

Desiree took Marcus' hand in hers and gave it one last squeeze before hugging her mother and father and stepping out of the door. Nothing she said would have erased the worries on any of their faces and so she didnt try. Besides, everything that could be said had been.

Opening up the door to her own car, she slid into the seat and grasped the wheel. She knew Tom knew she was nervous but she was now wired and there was not a chance that she was going to say it right out for Marcus to hear. She was going to go and do her job and then come home to him...and that was that. She would not think of any other possibilities.

In a controled voice, she said to Tom over her wire,"Lets get this over with."
