Firefly: The Next Generation (IC)

Wash laughed at Joseph's comment. "Joseph, if she met him in the war, she already knows how completely stubborn he is. Besides, you're pretty stubborn yourself. You remember the time you said you could sneak up on River and scare her?" She grinned.

Wash snickered. "Of course, Joseph. That's my duty, besides flyin' and keepin' you 'nd Kylar outta trouble," she teased. "Plus, it's so easy."

"I'll be in my shuttle!" shouted Jesse. "Let me know when the service starts."

"C'mon, kid," said Jayne. "Don't be like that."

"Cāo nǐ, bàba!" Jesse yelled to Jayne as he opened his shuttle's door. He turned and flipped his father the bird as the door slammed down.

Jayne flipped his son back, even though he couldn't see it. "Damn kids," he muttered. He turned around to see his "niece and nephews" talking to a blonde-haired girl. "Hey guys," he spoke up as he approached them. "Who's the girl?"

Wash smiled, knowing Joseph. "Alright, alright, you win. But you also don't got me in your office, Joseph, which is the advantage you have. Just like I had the advantage when it came to who could steal the adrenaline from my daddy's storage."

Wash also laughed. "Oh dear, Daddy wasn't happy with us. . . I think the only one who was amused was Jayne. . . Well, maybe Momma some. . ."

Alexa laughed as well, looking up at Joseph. "And I thought Daddy was going to kill me, he didn't think I knew where the adrenaline was," she added.

"Oh, dear, let us not go into the time you found the rubbing alcohol," Wash chuckled, almost doubling over in laughter. "You had to admit, you had that one coming.

Mike

She squeezed Kylar's hand for a long moment, slipping in beside him, finding her place in the loose circle, a little more hidden from the busy thoroughfare. He remembered her, he remembered. It was enough. She shook her head, refusing his apology.

"It isn't your fault, it doesn't matter."

It really didn't. She was here now, that was important. She was just hoping she could get away.

She inhaled slightly at Joeseph's full name and then nodded. Of course. She took his hand and clasped it gently, "It is a pleasure to meet you, Dr. Reynolds."

She retreated then, but calmly, content to listen to the banter and grin slightly at the points she found especially amusing, like the dark humor of her knowledge of Kylar's stubbornness. The antics of the father and son pair were rougher, but still joyful and she hid another grin in response. They were a family. Not for her, not yet, but they joy was infectious and she was happy to be allowed so near.

Kylar smiled slightly as Mike brushed off his apology, and then listened as Joe and Alexa continued to canter back and forth. He laughed a little and said, "Don't forget the time we made Jayne think the ship was haunted -- that was hilarious."

Her first out-of-world test had been to see if she could pilot a shuttle. Not that Mr. Mal had liked it, but Mistress Inara had insisted it was a necessary skill, and though she had logged many hours on a simulator and made small jumper flights, this was her first interstellar trip. To a funeral no less!

She wore a sari of white, her mistress and Mr. Mal wore black. The ride had been somber, since it was their friend who died, so Amaya kept herself quiet and unobtrusive. As she landed at the meeting location, it was all Mr. Mal could do not jump out of the shuttle, but Mistress Inara quietly reminded him to be patient.

As the debarkation hatch opened, they headed out first. She made sure she was wearing a gauzy veil over her face and head, before she stepped out. Her features were discernible through the sheer fabric, but it was out of respect mroe than anything.

As Inara made her way to the assembled group her beautiful face broke into a smile as she saw her son, and she moved to embrace him. "Joseph!" Mal followed behind, looking to Kylar and reaching out to shake his hand.

Amaya stood back shyly, watching the reunion. Her green eyes took in everyone gathered. Though a Companion was welcome in all settings, these people knew each other. She spied Joseph in his mother's embrace and smiled. There was a face she did know, and she forced herself to walk sedately toward him.

Pressing her hands together at her chest she bowed once he looked her way, a smile gracing her lips through the sheer fabric. "Hello, old friend."

"Thank you. I've missed you, too. You are looking well, Joseph." She can't help the grin that steals its way across her features. She would hug him later, when there weren't so many eyes on them, and when her mistress wasn't watching her behavior so intently. "The trip was quiet, really, and not altogether unpleasant." Okay so parts of the trip had been quiet. Others had been filled with argument from the stormy couple that were her dear friend's parents. It was apparently how they expressed their feelings for one another. Amaya had found it amusing much of the time, but it was uncomfortable being the third wheel during others' arguments.

"We should catch up later when you have a chance. 10 years between messages is a long time for friends to remain apart." She gave him a grin, before attempting to school her features into a serene and welcome expression.

Her experiences were few with the other Serenity crew and their offspring. She had visited with Inara on short missions that weren't particularly dangerous, but would allow her to see some of the 'Verse while she learned about life on a ship, since she had hoped to follow Inara's footsteps and perhaps tie herself to a trade ship in order for her to have as many clientele as possible.

While on the ship she had stayed by Inara's side, or would spend time on the bridge with Miss River while she flew Serenity, or she would spend time in the Infirmary with Mr. Simon, sometimes helping him stock, sometimes just sitting in. Other times she'd be in the engine room with Ms Kaylee, mostly keeping her company, and occasionally singing the songs of her parents' ancestors at her request.

She approached the others, wondering if they remembered her, and bowed to them, then turning to Kylar to give him a sympathetic gaze. "My condolences for your loss." She had liked Ms Zoe. Next to her mistress, she was the woman she most admired. Her strength of character never failed to impress Amaya. She was sorry the 'Verse had lost someone so strong.

Wash had watched the reunion between the Companion and Joseph and she smiled. She stood up and walked around a moment before returning to Joseph's side. "Hello. Amaya, wasn't it?" she asked, smiling broadly.

Mike identified the new arrivals mostly by the reactions of the others, withdrawing a bit into herself. The commotion was heartfelt and entirely outside of her. She felt keenly the difference between her own family and this one.

The blond woman shook her head, this was getting to be too long in the public eye for comfort. She touched Kylar's hand gently. "When we parted last you offered to take me with you. If that offer is still open, if you don't mind, I'd like to find a place to get settled in?" she tilted her head back toward the ship. "I don't want to interrupt the reunion of your friends. I'll just be in the way."

Amaya nodded to Wash with a smile. "it is. Long time no see, but life has a way of making us strangers to our childhood selves. " she grinned, moving aside the veil to show her face. She turned to Kaylee and Simon, bowing to them before embracing them. "It has been a long time, but I am happy to see you."

Wash smiled brilliantly at the Companion in front of her. "It does, doesn't it?" she agreed, hugging the woman that was her sole female friend growing up. She whispered in her ear, "If you want, you can steal Joseph away, and I can distract Mal and Inara for you." She knew Amaya and Joseph were close, and she knew Inara watched her apprentice like a hawk.

She couldn't help but flush. She was a Companion, she didn't blush, for goodness sake! She looked at Wash. "I have missed you, Wash, but I always knew you would end up on your feet." She gave her a broad smile, then glanced over to Joseph, before looking at her friend. " I don't know if we will have time, and I assure you that he and I have a lot to catch up on. We will, though, with time. Thank you, though," she whispered back.
