When was the last time you felt bad for saying something you didn't realize was out of order?

that's a recurring problem in my life. but only in one limited area. i live in a fairly conservative part of the country, and i regulary us "motherfucker," "damn" and such for emphasis in conversation. usually i limit that to the appropriate audience, but not always. i think telling my son's teacher last week that one of the questions on a quiz was "fucked" probably fits into that category.

when was the first time that you deliberately said something "out of order" because it, in fact, needed to be said?

Probably my first day in senior band. The director would not let me play in the senior band as a freshman.........so my first day in the band, I challenged for the first day as soon as he announced the proceedure for challenging. I was a quiet and very shy person at the time, so telling him that I would have challenged last year, was quite a bold move.

Love the story of the quiz. I wish a parent would have the nerve to say that to me..........

When was last time you regretted not saying something to someone?

[edit *scratching head -- quiet and shy? -- nahhhh*]

i never told my stepfather that i loved him before he died. he was a stoic man, and although i considered telling him, i thought it would be too awkward. i should have assumed the awkwardness.

when was the first time that you understood that words can be very powerful?

I was in high school and my English teacher introduced me to Zora Neale Hurston........

What was the last thing that you read that made you stop and think?

A book review in The Nation. It reviewed four books debating the issue of whether technology and popular culture have deteriorated the quality of poetry, or just provided other avenues for exposure to the "common man."

I vote for the latter.

What was the first thing you read that infuriated you?

It was a piece about the Queen Mother the day after her death. It talked about the stupid people who admired her, calling her all kinds of disgusting things.

What was the last thing that you read that made you laugh?

Boondocks (the cartoon), this morning

What was one of the first things you read that made you either tear up or develop a lump in your throat?
