I have to disagree on your view of the Union flag.

My history is loads rusty, but I do seem to remember that the Union flag was constructed from the amalgamation of the English, Scottish and Welsh flags of the time.

Which would make your statement incorrect.

By all means correct me if I'm wrong. I'm sure someone will look it up.

...

Luv and stuff,

An ENGLISHMAN!

And, I hate to be the one to correct you! ;)

The Union Flag is actually made up of an amalgamation of the Cross of St George, the Cross of St Andrew and the Cross of St PATRICK.

So, the Irish got included, but the Welsh didn't (although the Irish didn't get included until 1801. Between 1603 and 1801 The Union Flag just contained the crosses of St George and St Andrew). I think the reason the Welsh flag of St David wasn't included was because England and Wales had united years before, when Henry Tudor (a welshman) became King Henry VII of England (and Wales).

Luv & lots of stuff

An ENGLISHWOMAN

P.S. :p

Edited to add: Wales was *(and is) a Principality, not a Kingdom, there others were *(are).

*Depending upon one's POV, of course. ;)

Cool Lou-Lou.

Thanks for that. I remembered getting the lesson at school, and being hugely interested in it, but after so many years since i thought about it, I'd forgotten the details.

Steve w, if you ever come back, my apologies, I stand corrected.

However, I've just re-noticed the piece in your post about being an anorak for knowing which way up the Union flag should be.

Something else that is actually worth knowing, is that the Union flag, flown the wrong way up, is actually recognised as a distress signal.

So poke that in your anti-anorak pipe.

Pleasure, hon.

And, well, I left school a good few years after you ( :p), and, I did do British History as an 'A' level, and I retain all kinds of useless crap in my memory. :D

What you said about flying the Union Flag upside-down - Yep!

Lou - closet anorak. ;)

I know yep my sweet.

Had an RSM, well a couple actually, who were real sticklers for that sort of thing.

Woe betide the man who put the flag up the wrong way!!!!

Especially the regimental flag, it had a piggin' cap-badge on it!!!!

It would take a real dozey bastard to do that!

Right! With the flagpole on the left, the broad white bands around the diagonal red cross (saltire) should lead clockwise.

The Union Flag starts with the white saltire on blue of Scotland (King James of...)

Then, on top of that, add the red saltire on white of St patrick (for Ireland) - broad white bands leading clockwise as above.

Finally, plonk St Georges' (England) on top of the lot. (The perpendicular red-on-white cross.)

And, as Snooper said, really there ought to be a dragon in there somewhere.  But there ain't!

Just for completeness, strictly, it's only the "Union Jack" when it's flown on a ship. Elsewhere, it's the "Union Flag"...

Whew!

I stand in awe at the knowledge of people on such an esoteric issue!

I'm always happy to learn, especially as I'm forever getting into danger at sea and simply putting the flag the right way up! What a fool I am! No wonder no-one calls the coastguards and just floats by, laughing callously and pointing!

As an Englander exiled in Wales, I have to say that the Welsh simply HATE being called a Principality. It reminds them that Prince Charles rarely comes within 100 miles of the place (neither did Diana, for that matter). Personally, I consider it a region of the UK, like Yorkshire but without a decent cricket team.

BTW, as a Man U fan, I congratulate the best LEAGUE team in the nation. Vastly superior and I would kill for your consistency. However, I can simply re-run the tape of Barcelona '99 for sustinence!

Washington Post says that the "leaders" of Iraq have approved a flag design.

I wonder if they're using a picture of Ahmad Chalabi, or one of Cheney?

"Land of Hope and Glory" would be a huge improvement!

Except the bloody americans have gone and butchered this piece of English heritage as well.

They call it 'Pomp and circumstance' and they play it at all their graduation ceremonies and they don't even know it has lyrics... Especially lyrics about England!!!!

Well I'm certainly glad my tax dollars are being used and not squandered on idiocy and the like. Forget WMD I want to see the flag :D

I heard about this on the radio. The new Iraqi flag is (I think) white with a light-blue crescent on it (for Islam). At the bottom there are three stripes, two of the same shade of blue (for the Tigris and Euphrates rivers), and between them one yellow stripe, to symbolize the Kurds (honest to God. That's what they said.)

Iraqis are furious and unhappy. The shade of blue is apparently close to UN-helmet blue, which is also close to the blue used in the Israeli flag, which also has stripes at the bottom (and top). Green is the color usually associated with Islam, and so a lot of Iraqis feel that they're getting Israeli or UN colors shoved down their throats and feel it's a deliberate swipe at their religion.

Also, portraying the Kurds as 'yellow' and trapped between Iraq's two principal rivers has the Kurds hopping mad as well.

All in all, it looks like the governing council, who evidently commissioned and approved the new flag, has succeeded in pissing everyone off. People take their flags pretty damned seriously.

Now that's what I call poor planning. These could be just the assholes needed to run "PornoGraphics".

They are very prone to that. It's obviously some sort of confusion and the translators are to blame. I'm watching TV right now, and while Sky News shows images of the assault on Falluja which apparently has set half the town on fire, CNN is showing conference with the tagline 'Rebuilding Iraq'. They must be thinking, to paraphrase Douglas Adams, 'Ah, this is obviously some strange usage of the word "rebuilding" that I wasn't previously aware of'.

I heard the news of the flag on the radio, as well, and thought the reporter did a fine job at succinctly explaining what all of the fuss was about over the flag. It's really quite simple: Imagine a government (that was appointed by a foreign country) announcing out of the blue that the stars and stripes was no longer the US flag.

People would be in a furor. Hell, the US public, largely due to propoganda by the US Govt IMnsHO, has a hissy fit over the concept of the Hague for crying out loud and a frighteningly large percentage of people polled think we should pull out of the UN. I can't even comprehend what the reaction would be if a foreign power supplanted the government and took away the flag.
