Okay. I wasn't aware of that. If I really wanted to, which I don't, I could probably trace my ancestry back and find ancestors who were slaves, although of a different kind than chattel slaves. Probably most people could.![]()
Yes, I quite agree with that. I'm pretty sure my paternal branch got here on the back of an indentured servant, which at the time, wasn't much of a step up from slavery. And even beyond that, I often counter complaining about the plight of blacks in the United States (especially in view of the plight that a lot of those of other races are hit with in the United States--whites in the hollow of Appalachia, for instance) with the question of whether they aren't glad they somehow got here and aren't living in the parts of Africa now where most of their ancestors came from? I mean I've been to Nigeria and Sierra Leone and seen the conditions there. Have any of them who are complaining about living in the United States?
That said, I don't see the relevance to Michelle Obama's speech. She was exhibiting a hopeful "we've come a long way, baby" note--where once her family could have been doing manual labor without pay to build a mansion, they now live in the mansion as the occupants. All because of how America has progressed. If you don't get that, I think you came to the speech without an open mind--certainly without an open heart.
