Most of the world is interested because the US still is The Empire and world leader.
-- I, too was one of Trump's ardent fans initially. But I'm starting to be deflated by TrumpCare and his external politicies (the same wars as Obama, selling armament to Saudis!!) and other broken promisses.
By the same token, I disliked Obama : Obamacare + the nuclear deal with Iran+ he's the president who dropped the most bombs on foreign territories!!

I see none of the Obama or Trump supporters as being the Devils incarnated. As the GB political infighting often goes.

God knows which one of them is ultimately right, politics and economics still ellude me.

Hobby Lobby billionaire ordered to hand over Iraqi treasure trove of priceless artifacts

The United States Department of Justice filed a civil complaint in federal court demanding that Hobby Lobby “forfeit” thousands of Iraqi artifacts illegally smuggled into the country.

“The protection of cultural heritage is a mission that [Homeland Security Investigations] and its partner U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) take very seriously as we recognize that while some may put a price on these artifacts, the people of Iraq consider them priceless,” stated Special Agent-in-Charge Angel M. Melendez.

The Department of Justice also filed a “stipulation of settlement” with Hobby Lobby in which the arts-and-crafts retailer will pay a $3 million fine and consent to the forfeiture of the artifacts in question.

Today’s action will end the civil case. There is no word yet on potential criminal prosecution.

A few dozen Ku Klux Klan members and supporters shouted “white power” at a rally on Saturday in Charlottesville, Virginia where they protested against a city council decision to remove a statute honoring Confederate General Robert E. Lee.

The group was guarded by scores of police and outnumbered by hundreds of counter-protesters who waved signs denouncing racism. The anti-KKK protesters raised their voices in chants and shouts, drowning out speeches from the white supremacists, live video feeds on social media showed.

There were no initial reports of violence at the rally that lasted less than an hour. The Klan group that brandished Confederate flags and signs with anti-Semitic messages was separated from crowds by a ring of fencing and a heavy police presence.

In February, the Charlottesville City Council voted 3-2 to remove the statue from the park once named for Lee and make plans for a new memorial to remember the southern city’s enslaved population, The Daily Progress, the local newspaper reported.

But I wouldn't have gone to the counterprotest anyway, which I think showed worse than the KKK rally, which I'd already decided to stay away from and thought that ignoring was the best response. I'm also not in favor of taking down the statues that started all of this (with Jefferson being more connected to slavery than Lee was--so in the town of Jefferson, are we going to strip him out of history too?). The historians' proposals on the statues and the parks were to add context to them, not pretend history didn't happen. And renaming Lee and Jackson parks Emancipation and Justice was just flipping in the other direction (and weren't suggested in the pubic opinion poll put out on renaming the parks). My suggestion was East and West parks to help tourists navigate the town, since Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe--all slaveholders--have made this a tourist town (and, in addition to the presence of UVa--Jefferson's university--provides the economic base here).

So, let's see how the Trumpettes here explain my views on this as the "single liberal" they see in everyone who isn't a Trumpette.

Most of the Sculpture in the monuments scattered all over from the South and the North, though frankly the North spent Republican Money (Less) on their art work, in the ~1860-1920? period is magnificent in execution. Perhaps an additional bronze plaque that explains who Lee really was, and why his story, of an Army Officer sucked into the whirlwind of politics, should be cautionary.

I think the two movement are naturally linked.

He served the United States with distinction and, was offered command in the armies of both sides, and when forced to choose, he went with his origins, which is pretty much the choice that most of us would make--and he spent much of his time after the war working for reconciliation. Additionally, Lee never purchased or sold any slaves--he inherited them when it was the law in Virginia that you couldn't just outright free them--and he freed all of his in 1862--three years before the end of the war.

Now Jefferson, on the other hand, in the only book he ever wrote, depicted blacks as subhuman (lower than Native Americans), bred them (even himself) as property that kept increasing his financial worth, and sold them off to pay debts (including a few of his own children). And he's the big daddy in this town.

It is interesting that MLK monument is just opposite the Jefferson Memorial across the pond. The style of the two is so different and of course the times they lived in were so different. Yet they stare at each other over a shallow pond day after day.
