A lot depends upon your computer and, even more importantly, what operating system you're using.

If you use Windows XP, Norton AntiVirus 2007 might be one of the better choices available for "free." It includes antivirus, antispyware, worm protection, and rootkit detection--all of which reportedly function reasonably well.

The software isn't all that cheap, but you can download a trial version for free at www.Symantic.com

The trial period should be long enough to clear up your problem. Be aware, however, that you'll probably start getting phone calls trying to sell you the package.

better still, consider AVG by grisoft. free to download & free updates for personal use.

Your first step is to get rid of the virus because it might interfere with the installation of resident virus check.

go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ for an online, immediate virus check.

The TrendMicro is the maker of PC-Cillin which is a very good virus check, but it's not free.

Grisoft.com just released AVG Free version 7.5 -- if it's half as good as version 7.1 was, it's just what you need.

Grisoft's AVG free
its easier to google for it then try for the links on their site
free just has a few less feature than full and no firewall
no biggie

I'd stay away from symantics and macafee
the user editions are rather bloated and broken

kypreski is also good
though I know I've butchered its name

you may want to look up esset's nod32, its not to much more than nortan or macfee and much better. and cheaper than a server licence of symantic or macfee

I personaly use nod32 or avg

okay, i used ad-aware, something else, and i'm downloading avg right now... the other two both found files, but did not fix my problem... i hope i do not have to reformat my computer because i can't find my recovery discs. don't know if i lost them when i moved a couple weeks ago?

meh. i just want to cry. stupid bf looking at porn on my computer... i'm not mad at him, just frustrated because i can't fix it. i was actually more upset because he tried to hide it, which logged me out of all my stuff so i had to retype everything back in... which in all actuality, i probably wouldn't have noticed if he didn't do it, because everything would have looked normal... oh well... the point is, my computer is sick and my maternal instincts are no help :( sorry for ranting... just need to vent a little...

I've been looking for some new anti-Virus ware too because I've had it with McAfee. I used it by default because it always came bundled with the computer I bought, but then the Renew pop-ups started, and when I finally sent them my money all I got was a disc that said "Renew & Restore". No instructions, no information. Was this my update or what?

So try to get a hold of someone at McAfee to to ask them. Impossible. I took a chance and installed the disc and it gave me a link to click on so I could register my copy (must register before you can use it), but everytime I clicked on the link I got an error message saying the page couldn't be displayed. I tried accessing it using IE and Firefox both and kept on getting that error. So I coudn't register. So was I being protected or not? No idea.

Now I keep on getting messages saying that updates for my McAfee Security System are available, but everytime I try to install them I get sent to that same damned registration link which sends me to that same damned "Page Cannot Be Dispayed" error.

I emailed them, went to their Knowledge Base (Ha! Has a knowledge base ever worked?), tried all their on-line help stuff, and nothing worked. And the one thing McAfee does an excellent job of protecting is access to any one who works there who could give you a fucking answer.

So I paid my $50 for what? A McAfee salesman called me a month or so ago to try and get me to renew and I told him I'd never touch one of their products again.

Anyhow, I didn't mean for this to turn into a rant, but when I had a problem awhile ago and talked to Dell Tech, the guy there had me run some free Virus checker program from the web, which he said was better than anything you could get in the stores. I can't remember the name, though, but I think it might be that AVG one.

Tell your boyfriend to stop looking at porn sites, most of them are invested with horrible nasty spyware.

AVG worked great for me, no problems as of yet although it did say I need to update it since it apparently runs out on the 15th of January but the link clicked led to packages of AVG software for $29.99 for some reaosn whereas the one I had was installed free by a computer shop after getting rid of infections for me after McAfee and Norton turned out utter shit.

where do i find a free copy of windows xp? my dad has a disc, but lives out of town... is there anything online i can download, or do i have to obtain an actual copy?

torrents?
a starving IT student?

no legal way of doing it
even calling MS wont help you very much(most of the time)
just borrow one from someone you know
unless you dad is the only person you know that uses XP

You might have gotten a trial version?

The one from http://free.grisoft.com doesn't expire, and doesn't ask you to pay. Go there and get the FREE one.
