We also have mandatory insurance here and most individual states have one type or another of inspections for road worthiness...although from some of the vehicles you see out there, you would assume it's a pretty much ignored law.

If you are involved in an 'incident' of some sort, the cops will automatically check on the computer whether your details are correct, the MoT is in date, and the Insureance ditto.
A failure on MoT will result in cancellation of Insurance and that's a very stiff fine and/or umpteen points on your licence; and that just the start !

Long, long ago, when cars were much simpler and there was no such thing as a crumple zone, a journo with whom I worked referred to an MoT as a Certificate of Stiffness.

I can get into some late 1950's and '60's Glenn Miller like "Pennsyvania 6-5000"

Doesn't hurt any either that the sax player on the left at :50, and my brother that just passed away this week, were the kick ass sax and trumpet duo for their high school band in the early '50's.
