As every so once in a while, my mother and I agreed to talk to each on Skype, despite being so far away that going over, even on most holidays, proved to be impossible. Today, on my first day of school, was one of those occasions. We talked for a good twenty minutes and I eyed my watch a whole lot. As much as I liked talking with my mother, I hated to ruin my schedule. I was a little OCD like that.
"Nervous for your first day honey?" my mother said, almost shining with pride.
"A little, but much better than before." I replied with a laugh.
"Understatement of the year..." she said, sharing my sentiments.
"Tell me about it."
"Okay Nikki, I should let you go before I ruin your morning routine."
"Haha, okay ma'am. Love you!"
I smiled as I logged off and got off my computer to change.
A week ago, I'd probably tell you that I wasn't ready for college. I mean, I thought that was for sure, especially in the early summer after my graduation. But then, as the days went on by, I found this self-confidence to be less and less reassuring. The idea of being so far away from home (as I lived in the middle of freaking nowhere in New York state) and the beginnings of me as my own person, well, it was a bit unnerving. I'm sure every other freshman (and fresh-woman? Is that even a word?) felt just as anxious as I was. My mother told me that it was normal to feel the way that I did - I was just eighteen years old and the new surroundings would be a splash of cold water out of nowhere. She went through the same thing, she would tell me over and over again. Luckily in my case, I had a special someone to go through this tough times with - Tyler, my boyfriend.
It's funny, because we found ourselves nearly in the same predicament as when we first met in junior high. We've been together ever since, and there was something poetic of us going through the same feeling again, just now as adults. He was my stone during those late summer nights, where I actually, believe it or not, thought about just dropping college out of the sheer fear. It wasn't everyday that Tyler would be the one calming me down, as he was the one that normally freaked out about every little thing, but hey - I couldn't say that I didn't appreciate it.
People often asked me how we fit together so well. Tyler was a short guy, according to the many tall individuals would inhabited my rural neighborhood - standing at about 5'8. He was your stereotypical 'geek' I guess; wore thick glasses, wasn't too into fashion, was no good at sports and absolutely loved programming. This was in contrast to me, I suppose - many considered me a complete and utter bombshell, I was 5'11, absolutely loved sports, was endowed with a D cup bust, had a shapely round bum, long legs and obviously, had the 'stuff' to become the next head cheerleader. Obviously, this inquiry would get me a little riled up, as for whatever reason, these same people believed that Tyler and I didn't have anything in common. In other words, they thought that I was a complete dolt.
The thing is, Tyler and I both excelled at school (though he was barely ahead of me). So much so, that we actually both did college credit work in our spare time. In fact, as we both worked on our schedules together, we'd be both taking mostly second year courses, right from the get-go! We'd have just a handful of classes apart, which couldn't be helped - he was a computer science major and I was an economics major. Still, we worked this out and would be seeing a lot of each other.
The one thing that I absolutely wished that he was fond of...would be jogging. As I mentioned earlier, I loved sports and fitness and namely, I loved taking care of my own body. I jogged every morning, as it was part of my daily routine; 6 AM, wake up and eat breakfast; 7 AM brush teeth and shower, 8 AM jog and shower (okay, I loved taking showers in the morning. Big deal); 9 AM, go to class; and so forth.
Stuffing my clothing into my gym bag, I stood in front of the mirror in my regular 'working out' clothes. I wore a sportsbra, which I found oddly supportive of my breasts along with my bike shorts and trusty running shoes. I didn't see anything wrong with this outfit, as Tyler did mention that he wasn't too ecstatic of my get-up. He said something about it driving boys crazy? Honestly, I couldn't see it - it was working out clothes? How could any guy find that sexy?
Oh! I almost forgot to text Tyler to meet me later after my jog. I dove into my bed (which I admit, wasn't neatly made), eager typing at my phone.
"Morning sweety! I'm gonna go out for my jog. Meet me later before class? Luv u!'
I waited there for a few minutes to see whether he'd respond or not. He didn't; I guess that he was sleeping in for another hour or so, as he loved to do that. I shook my head and laughed before getting up, stretching a bit and running out of my residence building. It was a fresh morning and I wasn't going to waste this! It was my first time taking in the surroundings here and I had to say, I loved the place. Even if I was used to fewer people being around while I jogged, I must say.
