why do americans fight the metric system?

I'm 55 years old and was taught metrics in the US school systems from the very beginning of my education. So it's not ignorance. For a while kilometers were put on our speed limit signs, then that disappeared. I don't understand it myself.

I'm sure they were all changed back when Reagan got into office...

why do americans fight the metric system?
It's mainly due to the cost versus benefit.

Consider the costs of all of the things which are labeled with fluid measures, lengths, and weights in the commercial environment, and all of the government regulations and laws related to those measures which would need to be changed and re-written. All of the school books, road signs, etc.

And what is the benefit to the Americans who have to pay for all of those changes?

Not immediately, but that's pretty much what happened, it was a casualty of the Reagan administration budget cuts. It was popular with the older people to abolish it so that they wouldn't have to learn new tricks. I learned both systems and can do conversions in my head. Some textbooks only taught metric, then when the rug was pulled some people in that window were taught measurements which they only used in science class or working on cars, and mostly couldn't measure or estimate in either system. Helping them was a bigger need than reading for adult education tutors.

In the sciences many just use the metric system unless they have to use American parts to build it.
As for it being an economics issue that is when you slowly start adding things like km to signs. At this point I think it is more stubborn American pride and ignorance. I have found the metric system so much easier to use but I am stuck in America 🙃

I remember freaking my nephew out with the first car I had with a digital dash that you could change from Imperial to Metric. He thought 120 was too fast.
