Get Well Soon (closed)

Shadow's hips rolled in response to her rhythms. His breath was coming heavily now. His arms tightened around her voluptuous frame, letting her feel his strength. "Vixen... I'm close," he whispered to her. "But I won't let go without you." She had eased his mind, taken away his pain. He wanted her to feel the pleasure of release as well.

She was surprised by his words but they spurred her on. Bringing her head up to look at him, she moved her hips with determination, panting with her need. In a matter of moments, their combined movements were enough for her to climax in his arms. She cried out as her muscle clenched tightly around him, milking him.

With a staccato bark, Shadow let his own climax go. As his seed spilled out, he began to roll back into the bed with Vixen still in his arms. "My dear, that was wonderful," he said, his voice still husky with passion. "Best turn of fortune I've ever had. Yesterday I'm lying in a hospital bed shaking off the drugs that put me under. And now... well, here we are."

Vixen laughed as he rolled them both to the bed. "A very good turn of fortune," she agreed whole-heartedly. This was how she had hoped it would end when she had agreed to the date.

"Would you have really have waited for me?" she asked suddenly. It wasn't really all that strange of a question. How many guys could and would do something like that? None that she had met. Most of them didn't have the control or experience it would take.

Shadow nodded his head in reply. He pushed the sheets out from under him and draped them over their bodies. "When I traveled I never took hospitality for granted. I always returned a favor, repaid a kindness. You've been wonderful, and I wanted you to sleep tonight satisfied." He shrugged and smiled. "It's just how I am."

"I like how you are," she whispered as she kissed him softly. She snuggled close and rested her head on his shoulder. "I don't think I've ever been quite so satisfied as I have been tonight. I'll be sleeping soundly," she assured him with a smile.

"Good to hear." Shadow himself still had doubt about his sleep. It was always uncertain. Nevertheless he reached over to the end table and flicked the lamp's switch off. He put his arms back around Vixen, hoping to get a peaceful night's rest.

"Sleep well," she whispered softly in the dark. A soft yawn passed her lips as she closed her eyes and slowly drifted off to sleep. It was unusual for her to fall asleep so quickly, but she hadn't been joking about being well satisfied. That always helped matters for her in the end.

For a while, all was well. Sometime after Midnight though, the rain came. The sound elicited memories in Shadow as he slept. In his dreams he recalled the sights, the sounds, even the smell of rain on the pavement. He remembered the scream of twisted metal. He remembered his vision tunneling and struggling to stay in place. But in the dream he experienced it as a powerless observer, a voyeur helpless to save the four people in the car. He could only watch as the driver's life was snuffed out...

Shadow's eyes flew open, but he didn't start. The dream was too familiar for that to happen. He heard the faint patter of rain outside and waited. Sure enough, thunder rumbled in the distance a minute later. It was always during thunderstorms that he had the dream. He looked down at Vixen and sighed. He would wouldn't be able to get back to sleep for a while yet. The dream never happened twice in a night, but it was enough to rattle him. He gently slid out from under the sleeping fox and walked half-blind to the balcony outside the living room. He left the bedroom door and the sliding glass door open without thinking.

The air was still warm and the rain made things damp and steamy. It also made visibility limited. No one would see him standing naked on the balcony. Not that anyone who would be up at 3:00 in the morning would care. He leaned on the railing and let the rain gently drizzle on his head and shoulders. Shadow always found the sensation soothing, despite his unconscious unease over thunderstorms. He'd loved them as a child, and perhaps that fascination never went away, even with the accident.

Vixen didn't stir as he left the bed or as made his way out of the room and onto the balcony. It took a few moments for her sleeping form to shift slightly in search of him, already accustomed to his presence. As one of her hands searched for him and was unable to find him, she slowly started to wake. Blinking in the darkness, her eyes moved over the bedroom.

The fox could almost feel that he wasn't in there, but still she looked as she slipped out of the bed. It took her a second to realize that the sounds of rain and thunder she was hearing was slightly louder than it should be. Moving quietly to the bedroom door, she peeked out and saw the balcony door open and the shadow of the coyote she was looking for. She stood there, at the doorway, watching him for a second...debating going back to bed and leaving him to his thoughts.

Rubbing the sleep from her eyes, she knew she wouldn't be able to get back to sleep alone. It always seemed to feel wrong when it wasn't her bed. Padding barefoot and naked across the room, she made no move to be quiet. There was no point, she was fairly clumsy when she tried to be sneaky. She paused at the sliding door but only for a moment, long enough for her to decide it was too late to turn back. "Shadow..." she said softly as she stepped out onto the balcony, not moving more than a few feet from the door. The easier for her to escape if he wanted to be alone.

Shadow looked over at Vixen and tilted his head, silently asking her to join him. He was still quiet however. His hair and face were sprinkled with mist from the rain, simply adding to the haunted look in his features.

After a time he spoke at last. "I mentioned to you before about an accident. Thunderstorms remind me of it. Sometimes that makes it hard to sleep."

Vixen moved forward at the tilt of his head, coming to stand beside him. She said nothing as she moved closer to him and hugged him lightly, her arms staying around him as he finally spoke. "I don't like the thunder," she told him in response, "No reason behind it...I just don't like it, but it doesn't bother me when I'm sleeping." Her rambling had no point to it other than to keep her from asking him questions. He would tell her about it when he was ready.

A long silence passed before Shadow put his arm around Vixen in return. His head slowly turned to face her, a deep sadness in his eyes but also a desire to let go of something he'd been holding in. He waved over to the couch in the living room and walked back in with her, closing the door on his way in. "I haven't talked about this to anybody since the accident. But you've been wonderful to me. I'd like to see you again after this, and I don't want my... past to be an issue."

He sat on the couch with a heavy sigh. "I was 17 at the time. My brother Flint had gone off to college. I was out with my parents celebrating my dad's birthday. Family tradition. On the way home, it was pouring rain. Thunderstorm. We came through a crossroads when another car slammed into us. Bunch of idiots drag racing. One car swerved to miss us and got wrapped around a streetlight. The car that hit us had two people. The passenger was flung through the windshield and killed. The driver broke a leg... My father was killed instantly. My mother died of her injuries at the hospital."

Shadow put his head in his hands with his elbows propped on his knees. "I had a pair of cracked ribs and a broken arm. I'd lost a lot of blood. But being in that car... Flint offered to help, but I blew him off. I was scared of losing other people, so I left town to avoid getting close. The cops tried to hand me off to relatives. I forged a passport, scrounged some cash, and hopped a plane to Tokyo."

As he narrated, Shadow never once looked up at Vixen. He'd never actually told the story before, and for all his charm and wit it just wasn't easy to look someone in the eye saying all this. "I traveled constantly. Never let myself get close. Contemplated suicide four times. Somewhere along the way I figured I needed to stop running. I came back to the States and worked my ass off to make a name for myself. Predictably I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder when I worked up the nerve to talk to a psychiatrist.

"I've been trying to rebuild bridges with my relatives... but I haven't spoken to Flint since I left. I still don't know how to approach him." Finally, Shadow looked up at Vixen. "I'm telling you all this because, like I said, I'd like to see you again after this. I probably would have told you eventually, but the storm sort of forced my hand. I don't want to make my problems yours. I just want you to know that... I still have a few problems I need to work out."

The sadness in his eyes, made her worry but Vixen made her way to the couch quietly. Sitting down, her eyes moved to him as he gave her the whole story. She noticed that he didn't look at her until the end of it, but it didn't bother her. Not looking at the person you're telling something huge to can often make it easier.

When his story was over, Vixcen laid her hand over his and told him, "I want to see you again too. We both have baggage that we're going to have to work on, but I want...I want to give this, whatever's between us, a shot." She leaned forward slightly and kissed his cheek.

"I apperciate you trusting me enough to tell me all of this...even if the storm kind of forced your hand. Maybe it was a sign. That sounded a little corny but I can't help that," she said with a slight shake of her head.

Tears had collected in Shadow's eyes without falling during his story. They threatened to spill out at any moment but never did. At Vixen's remark, his lips parted in a small smile and a laugh escaped before he could check it. "Could be. I try to keep an open mind, you know?"

He put his arms around Vixen and relaxed into the sofa. "It feels pretty good to get this all off my chest." He had wondered if his bad luck with relationships were because he never opened up about this. Even this therapist was frustrated with Shadow's unwillingness to talk about the accident. And he had a further feeling that his abandoning his brother may have been the most nagging demon of all.

Vixen scooted closer and rested her head on his shoulder. "Am I the first person you've really told this to?" she asked softly as her free hand came up to rest on his chest. "Just having someone to confide in can be liberating...or so I've been told." She looked up at him and smiled softly as she realized that he seemed to be more open then he had been earlier.

"Relatives know what happened. Flint knows who happened. My psychiatrist knows what happened. I just don't talk about it." Ever since he was a child, Shadow had tried to avoid looking vulnerable. Growing up in a slummy neighborhood left him cautious. His hobbies made him a target for bullies. He had put up shields to keep people from hurting him. The death of his parents only made it worse and very nearly broke him.

But over the last few years, he was learning to open up more. He had to in order to network. He couldn't be distant anymore. Looking down at Vixen, he inhaled her scent deeply as he thought about what it meant to open up to her like this. Maybe it meant the scars were starting to heal. "You want to go back to bed?"

"But no other women you've known know...maybe it has something to do with that," she replied as she closed her eyes for a second. She didn't know why he had decided that it was important to tell her, but she was happy that he had. She wasn't the type to pressure someone into doing so, and it meant so much to her that she hadn't had to.

At his question, she opened her eyes and looked up at him. "Going back to bed would nice," she said as she stood up and held out a hand to him, "Come on. I probably won't fall back asleep for a while but we'll be more comfortable in bed."

Shadow took Vixen's hand and the two of them went back to the bedroom. He turned the lamp on the endtable back on, giving the room a soft, warm glow. As Vixen climbed into bed, Shadow took a moment to towel his face and shoulders off as they were still damp from the rain. He slipped under the sheets with her and wrapped his arms around her waist. He kissed her neck and whispered in her ear. "I know a little place that's open for breakfast. Want to stop in there come morning?"

Laying in bed, she watched him quietly as he toweled off before he slipped into bed. A soft sigh of comfort escaped her as his arms went around her. She had always been one of those people who liked to cuddle in bed. Vixen smiled softly at his question and whispered back, "I'd like that a lot." She had always been one of those people who liked to cuddle in bed.

Shadow was able to rest more peacefully now. He awoke to the feeling of a warm bed and a soft body pressed against him. It took him a moment to extract himself from the bed and get to the bathroom. He figured if he was up first, he should try to find something she could wear other than the dress last night. It was a little formal for breakfast. He himself slipped into a pair of boxers and jeans without bothering to pick out a shirt. He did put his eyebrow piercing in though. Not many of his clients new he had it as he never wore it during a show.

Vixen slept peacefully, even as Shadow slipped out of bed. She curled into herself as he made his way to the bathroom. It was until she heard the rustling of clothing that she slowly started to wake. The fox was not the morning person, but she had never been able to sleep for long when someone else was up and moving about. Blinking owlishly, she peeked out from under the covers at the unfamiliar room and smiled softly as she remembered the night before.

Shadow looked over at the sleeping fox and smiled. "Sleeping Beauty stirs. I believe I promised breakfast." He tossed a pair of jeans and a V-neck sweater onto the bed. "Not particularly glamorous, but these should fit you long enough." For himself he slipped on a red and black striped shirt and his cowboy boots. "I don't know if you're familiar with the place. Shecky's Diner?"

At the sound of his voice, her gaze zeroed in on him. "Sleeping Beauty was woken by a kiss...I didn't get mine, but I couldn't wait," she teased lightly as she got out of the bed and dressed in the clothes he had tossed. Pulling the sweater over her head, she thought about the name of the place. "It sounds familiar...but I'm not good with names."

"You'll like it. Very retro." His words proved true when they drove in to the parking lot of a diner with the old rail car facade festooned with chrome and neon signs. Two-tone checkered floor tiles, a soda bar, jukeboxes at each booth, it went the whole nine yards.

They were seated quickly as there weren't many people out today. Shadow snapped his fingers and produced a quarter between them. He dropped it on the table and repeated the process until he had four lying by the tiny jukebox. He put in 50 cents and selected Jailhouse Rock before pushing the last two quarters toward Vixen for her to pick a song.
