Sounds odd. A single handwashing has always removed anything for me.

Not for a lesson on handwashing but are you sure you're getting enough soap at the tips?

Often if you have a smell on your hands and don't put enough attention to every little part then the smell will remain.

Normally I find soap gets it off pretty well, but I guess it depends how strong the soap is you're using. Anything that would get the smell of, for example, gasoline off your hands should work for this too. Liquid dish soap and strong bar soaps like Irish spring should be effective. You could also use a bit of toothpaste as if it were soap. Or in a pinch, thoroughly licking your fingers before washing them should help because the enzymes in saliva are great at cleaning.
