GM Bailout? Feh!

ELVIS

I answered your question; it wasnt the answer you were expecting.

ELVIS

Look, I dont do pissing contests. If I ran no companies or 10 companies, the number wouldnt suit you. The definition of capitalism is the issue. Capitalism is defined many places. If you believe capitalism is fairy-magic, thats okay with me.

Will you PLEASE stop quoting that dumb-ass!

He ain't been around for awhile... and it is just like Lil' E to believe that even a pinhead like that can be reasoned with and brought to the light.

Elvis, Fox is right... that one isn't worth the effort, despite all your best intentions. And most of us have him on ignore.

Cloudy tried to warn me, but I just wouldn't listen. But I can learn.

Hell, I think I'll go look up capitalism and see what I been missing all these years.:p (and that's NOT for you bel)

The Big 3 have always been behind the curve regarding new technology and automotive design. Cars in other countries had smaller, more efficient engines, disc brakes, better handling and suspensions, etc. while America was offered bloated, chrome covered whales...and liked it.

When smaller cars were offered, they were dismal mechanically and in design. Remember the Pinto, the Citation and the Omni? You see a lot of them on the road...not!

Most U.S. auto plants were built in the 1920's and 30's...and in the main still use the manufacturing techniques pioneered by Henry Ford to build Model T's. Japanese and German factories are almost exclusively automated...only highly expensive vehicles are still hand built and produce a handful of units.

A combination of executive incompetence, union intransigence, stockholder short- sightedness and purchaser ignorance has led the Big 3 to where they are today. It's time for the roll to be called and the strong survive. Delaying the inevitable with taxpayers footing the bill is ridiculous. It would be cheaper to nationalize the industry like Chavez did the oil companies in Venezuela.

grrr....so the big 3 ceo's fly into DC on private jets....crying we need your money! Maybe its time that the big 3 become the big 1....or the big Zero. The CEO's don't get it...haven't for years...the union finds no issues with the contract...the dow will fall below 7,000....so let them all fall! the the union will not make changes, let the union try unemployment! see how the CEO's stand up in chapter 11 and do not offer them any package.

CEO's generally need the private jets because they can't rely on commercial airlines to conduct their business, sine they often have to be at many places at once.

Just curious, but why are the gas guzzlers known as 'land yachts'?

I mean, real land yachts are stripped down skeletons that use the wind as motive power (and go like shit off a shovel). There's no relationship at all that I can see!
{/threadjack}

A land yacht is also more commonly known as an oversized recreational vehicle that has the same amenities as a private sea yacht. Recall "Goofy Movie" and Pete's land yacht.

Just like the Brits did with Rover and that didn't work out so well...paging King Og.

Dictatorship has its advantages, you can do whatevere you damned well please.

And what's the real inflation rate in Venezuela now? Over 20%! (and growing).

At least now congress has seen the light and demanded plans from the big 3 for returning to profitability before opening the checkbook.

As my favorite writer puts it, "Capitalism was content under Hitler, happy under Mussolini, very happy under Franco and delirious under General Pinochet." :D

I can see the point of a company having a private jet but when times are lean its time to sell those private jets or take a stake in a rental jet program. A small private jet will set one back x millions, then another 100,000 to a million dollars to furnish the jet, and then guessing around 2 million to maintain that jet.

When your running out of money, its time to unload those assets and streamline and free up cash flow.

Where the company retrained all “secretaries/administration” people and forced everyone to write his or her email/letters, and when we have to travel to make our own travel plans and submit the expenses. Were still making money but we removed a lot of the overhead. Government should trim its own fat and ceo’s like the ones from the big 3 should suck it up. Why didn’t they fly on the same jet? Did they really need to take 3 jets?

It's just one more sign that they don't get it. Much in the way they were flabbergasted that congress didn't cut them all a check to take home on the jet

Well, they regard themselves as the saints of our religion. Don't saints always get their own way? ;)

People have a tough time understanding capitalism because of it's simplicity and elegance. To wit: I make a widget and trade it to you for a doo-dad.

Where people get confused is when the voluntary transaction becomes compulsive or fraudulent.

My bet is yes. CEO's don't travel alone and have strict timelines. You can't have them all come on the same airplane as they probably come in at different times and have different obligaions. They have their subordinates along as well for if and when a contract may be signed. Contracts are usually not a simple page to write - they often have pages and pages of stipulations to leaf through and the stipulations have to be written in prompt order. Remember, the CEO's run companies that have higher revenues than other countries have GDP. Governments have necessity for entourages when it comes to presidents and a large corporation is no different.

I guess I should have put the sarc emot after that last sentence. ;)

Easier said than done on demanding profitability from companies that have ignored modernizing for lo these many years...how much will that cost over and above temporarily forestalling bankruptcy. Modernizing means more robots and less humans...hell, pension all but the more intelligent of the workers off and train the remainder to guide the robots.

I see the meaning even though I haven't seen that film. It still seems to me a dumb usage.

Mind you, the same goes on the sea; gin palaces are called yachts, even though most of the real yachts are very different: small, sail-powered boats that are lots of fun, but far from comfortable.

I tend to think all the chatter on the news about the private jet thing is sideshow nonsense.

It's but a drop in the bucket, but is bad PR and makes for good senate sound bites ad nauseum. They could at least have chartered.
