Going to the hard stuff...

I prefer water to sodas and such, and I'm poor and I hate shopping *g* so I drink tap water (unless I happen to be out and about and grab a bottle from 7-Eleven or someplace). Our tap water tastes kinda funny unless I bottle it and let it get ice cold in the fridge first, though. I had a water filter years ago that took up a ton of space in the fridge for a small amount of water, and since I drink a LOT, it wasn't very efficient (took too long to process), and then it made the water taste very flat anyway. I'd love to have a Deep Rock or Culligan water cooler in the apartment, but it's not economically feasible at this time (although I'd have no trouble going through one of those big jugs a week). Maybe I'll try the Brita filter, if it doesn't filter out all the flavor of the water.

It all depends on the impurities you taste. If it's dissolved calcium,
(limestone region) the britta won't get it all. If it 's sulfer ( smells like rotten eggs. Probably the healthiest but most disgusting tasting water contaminant. Bad for copper plumbing ,though) it'll wear out single stage carbon filters in a hurry. The answer is to chlorinate it first, then filter it. The precipitate is easier to filter than the sulfur gas. It should remove iron, depending on the concentration.
