Happy Birthday to me!
I am now gainfully employed!
I got the job I was hoping for!
Woo Hoo!
But, I've now got a problem I never thought I'd have. I have been employed by the retail store as a part time employee and they have been very nice to me, trying to work with me on a schedule that won't conflict with this job. Unfortunately, I don't think I can keep this part time job, although I do appreciate what they've tried to do for me.
The problem is they want me to work from 4 PM to 11 PM and this full time job schedule is 11 PM to 7 AM. So, they said they could cut back my hours to 10:30 PM so I'd have time to change and drive to my full time job.
I would rather work at the part time job after working the night, because this night job is very relaxing and quiet work compared to the retail place. Working 6.5 hours in a relatively hectic environment and then going to a very quiet almost rural situation where wild turkey and deer come to hang out isn't the smartest thing. I'm worried I would fall asleep or be fighting sleep the whole night.
The best scenario for me would be to work the night shift first, then go to the more hectic retail environment after. I think I'd be more able to stay awake that way. But, the morning shift of the retail store has already been given to someone else. They wanted me to help close the store because of my background in security as well as the fact that I said I could work any hours or days when I filled out the application. So, I can't blame them for not giving me the schedule I prefer.
And they know about the full time job I was hoping for and so I think they will understand that I don't feel secure about the schedule. I've never been in retail before, and although it seemed like I'd be very busy because of the department I was assigned to (lawn and garden), I hope to separate from them on good terms so maybe I can stay on their list, if the day person doesn't work out.
Things have been so strange and at times, ironic. First, I spend over 2 months in hell, on the verge of bankruptcy as well as contending with the fact that I'd been labeled a racist, of all things.
I couldn't sleep at night, and I had a constant sickly feeling in my stomach as well as vindictive thoughts about several people. No, I wasn't a happy camper. I'd applied on line for more jobs than I'd care to remember...filled out application after application, wondering if anyone would even call me back.
I did get numerous calls and emails from spam jobs and insurance companies wanting me to join their sales force. They trump their sales up so much, I'm sure they are spam jobs, too. I even looked into work at home jobs, and found a whole new world of spam. It was like TV infomercials in computer form.
Yes, I got sucked in and bought into one situation, just because I was only wasting $9.95. Yes, it was worthless and I knew it, but I was curious. And if I didn't know it was a scam, my credit card provider did. When I made that purchase, it was locked down and I had to call and tell them that I did make that purchase. That should tell you something about the work at home racket.
I got several emails from people who said they were in HR for companies that saw my resume on Careerbuilder. They talked about jobs where I would use my bank account to accept doctor's fees and then transfer them to a place in Finland. And that was also how I'd get paid the $500 a week for that job. Right...I'm no idiot.
Most of them even had web sites that looked very legit and if i didn't know better, I could have signed up for one of those jobs and lost what little cash I had in the bank. I did go to one site and act like I was going to join up, just to see what the contract was like. It was very one sided and if something went wrong with a transaction, it was up to me to recoup what was lost and repair what was broken...on my dime. And that's only fair. After all, I was going to be paid $500 a week!
Sure, there are some real work at home jobs, but you have to have experience. Legal transcriptions and medical transcriptions are a couple, but you need several years of past experience to get those jobs. I have a friend that works as a programmer for one of the medical companies that have work at home transcribers.
You have to have your thinking cap on when you're out of work and very desperate for a job. If you don't read the fine print, you can be taken very easily. I feel for some people who don't know any better.
Eventually, these scam jobs will get better and better at their spiel. In some cases, although I knew they were scams, if they hadn't been based in Finland, I might have been tempted. But when your employer is in another country, that's very much a red flag.
Anyway all of this has been quite an experience. Over two months of no money, a fair amount of worry and little sleep, then the last couple of weeks, I got two interviews, and two jobs. Strange how life works out. And the best part of finding out today that I got the full time job...it's my birthday!![]()

Thanks, everybody. As I get older, birthdays aren't the same as they were when I was young. But, I think I can safely say this birthday was one I'll remember for a while.![]()
Hoping your new position is great. When do you start?
