We spent ours in Sintra with old friends and new friends. Welcomed the New Year with chorizo grilled on the terrace, garlicky prawns and too much wine before a hair-raising drive home. The rest of the house sleeps away the bright start to 2008.

Happy New Year from Amsterdam to all my friends on Lit.

Last night was crazy. I'm sure there was an organised fireworks display, but most of them were exploding at ground level in the street! Picture rockets sailing into crowds, large bangs and lots of smoke drifting from your shoes as bangers are thrown in your path, half naked guys running through the freezing cold while they threaten crowds with lit fireworks... It was another world.

So many fireworks were let off that by 1am Amsterdam was shrouded in thick smoke.

Then I got told off by an angry prostitute for having my camera turned off and facing the floor as I cruised through the Red Light District And then two guys tried to mug me. They didn't have much luck either, because I was so jumpy from the fireworks that I ended up lashing out. It was an odd moment. It was in the middle of the Damrak. One guy pulled me to one side to ask for directions to an Italian restaurant, which got my suspicions up cos we were right outside one. While I was smelling a rat, another guy thumped into the back of me in a kind of rugby tackle. My fists and feet went into overdrive, and suddenly the three of us were standing in the middle of the street staring at each other in astonishment.
