Help me shop for a stripper pole! :)

My wife had decided in her domestic goddess decorating mode... that our house is sorely for lack of a stripper pole. Apparently it wasn't enough for one month to tell me she wants to be an anal vixen, but a pole dancer too

I've searched google a bit and found there are alot of companies that make stripper poles, and the whole home-pole-dancing-movement has definately helped increase the size of the market.

I'd like a moveable/unmountable pole... not because I particularly care if the neighbors see I've got a strip club in my living room but becaue we just finished lovingly restoring this turn of the century dutch colonial and I don't want to go drilling holes in the beautiful plasterwork or red oak floors. The only room that doesn't have nice hardwood floors is my photography studio and I can't very well mount a stripper pole right in the middle of that room. Not -all- my clients are naughty. Just some.

A friction mounted system seems to be the way to go.

Experiences? Companies you know make a good product? Resources you know of, if you don't have any first hand experience?

I'm not going to deny my hot wife the joys of pole dancing!

I have no personal experience of this but I know someone who bought a pole from here, although she was looking for a fixed pole. I see the site does fixed, removeable and portable solutions.

At least it could give you ideas?

I notice you're from Scotland... interestingly enough I've found in my searches on Google that stripping at home/for fun/pole dancing as excercise is popular as hell in the England/Scotland/Ireland. I'd say 8 out of 10 companies that sell stripper poles from the home are based out of the British Isles. I had no idea it was so popular there.

You may need to make your own -- or at least make a modification to whatever you eventually buy.

The plaster ceilings are going to be where you have problems -- a "turn of the century dutch colonial" probably has a lathe-and-plaster ceilings which don't have very many hard points -- i.e. ceiling joists -- to brace a friction-mount against. Put the Pole in the wrong place by an inch or two, and it will just punch a hole in the ceiling.

Your pole will need to be fitted with a broad 'foot' to spread the pressure over a wide area to avoid damaging the ceiling -- probably 12 to 18 inches in diameter.

It will also need a "soft," non-skid foot on the bottom to avoid damaging the hardwood flooring. The bottom foot shouldn't need to be as big as the top foot but it should be 6-8 inches or so to minimize the possibility of denting the wood floor.

You will want a screw-jack tensioning mechanism and not a spring-loaded one -- the pole has to stay upright with your wife's weight on it.

You might look around for a pole that isn't specificaly designed for pole-dancing; something like a heavy drapery rod, or a source for brass or copper pipe of the right diameter -- 2 inches or so?

A piece of 3/4 or 7/8 plywood with a rubber or thick carpet backing should work fine -- I'd use the carpet myself because it's less likely to mar the plaster.

Now if the pole is removable (so I can still work in the space) I can put it in one of the basement rooms. The joists are exposed and the floor is a thin layer of carpet over concrete.

If you can see the joists and have carpet covered concrete for a floor, that's just about an ideal place for the pole -- at least from a structural standpoint.

It might be that the adjustment mechanism won't be called a "screw-jack" -- that's just a generic term for a adjustment/tightening mechanism that uses a threaded section instead of a spring-loaded tensioner.

For example, my shower curtain is a "screw-jack" design, but it isn't called that. It is just an chrome-plated tube with a cap on each end; one cap has a a bolt with a padded foot screwed in it to adjust the length and provide the tensioning.

The footed bolt is identical to the leveling adjustment on my Freezer and similar to the smaller adjustable feet on my granddaughter's student desk. Similar "adjustable feet" can be found in various sizes at most hardware stores -- you just need to tap a thread into, or weld a nut onto, a pipe cap to make a "screw-jack adjuster."

They also sell sell stainless steel tubing, pipes and bars to use them with -- but then, most home-centers and harware stores sell thiskind of stuff too and you don't have to pay shipping from Australia.

Two inserts with feet, an appropriate length of pipe or tubing, and, Voila, you have a stripper pole to fit between your concrete floor and the expose joists in the basement.

I'd imagine its a pretty hard workout if you're going at it seriously. I study martial arts and the hardest part of the training isn't getting beat on or handing out the beatings, its the stamina building stuff which is largely gymnastic (flipping over things, pulling yourself up, spinning around stuff, etc.)

So did you teach yourself? watch a dvd? go to the club and see what they did? How did you get good at it?

Stripper Pole or homemade pole?

Someone suggested getting a pole that wasn't meant to be used as a stripper pole....I've danced for some years and would very much suggest NOT getting something that isn't meant to hold body weight! Some moves on the pole are very acrobatic and for safety reasons you need something that was meant to hold a lot of weight, not to mention the added pressure that one puts on the pole with spinning jerking and flinging your body around on the pole.
One time I was at a small club that had a homemade pole and it became loose and while I was climbing it and spinning on top, it started to unscrew (it was friction mounted) and I hit my head on the ceiling, got a huge bruise and a terrible headache from it!
Just my opinion though...be safe!

That's a very good point and perhaps I wasn't very clear about the suggestion to consider something that wasn't purpose-built as a stripper pole.

What I meant was that it is possible to find materials and components to construct a home-built strippr pole that matches or exceeds the strength of a purpose built pole .
