Help wanted: blog advisors

i've been tipping my grey websites towards warmer greys-- slightly brown tinted. The men seem to like them.

That's a child theme that I did for twentyeleven, by the way. Mostly, all it is is the css file.

Those are totally the grays I'm talking about. Strong, clean, grounded grays; none of this 70s steel filing cabinet from the Naval department crap.

Sounds like it's time to do some experimenting.

I intensely dislike the default TwentyEleven theme that comes with Wordpress because its "customizable-ness" is only "customizable" to the degree that Wordpress thinks you should be able to customize it. There are a lot of people who like it for that reason, though.

Others that I actually do like are Dark Planet and Supposedly Clean. Play around with the CSS in the "Editor" section, and you can make look just about any way you like. :)

ETA: The above are all free templates. If you'd prefer to pay for a premium template, then disregard all I just said. :)

I'm a lazy ass with a lot of sites to crap out. I used to tweak all my own stuff for DAYS - now I like canned.

I can't begin to tell how many hours, DAYS I have saved when I opt for a widgetized and responsive canned site. I used to worry about the stamp of my "hand" a lot - and now I believe this comes from my content, I let the design be a holder.

Themeforest works, elegantthemes.com has some options, and I invested in a tool called "Artisteer" and it's WP theme crapping extension, but I don't recommend that unless you have more than 5 sites to do and a few months for a learning curve. If one DOES need fucktons of sites, this will be your new best friend.

Lately my favorite find has been the "gallery" child for the "thematic" framework - it's got a granite background, a simple-as-shit way for me to make thumbnails that behave like an ecommerce experience when because of my content I can't use any normal payment processor and an ecommerce platform to go with it.

AND you can use widget areas to create a content rich homepage. I like it better than most of the themes I did drop 30 bucks on.

I found Dark Planet, but it didn't appeal to me (at least as it was presented). Can't find Supposedly Clean to save my soul (not that there's much worth saving).

If you want an unbelivably customisable theme, try Suffusion.

This is suffusion;

http://pom.mirthfulconfusion.com/
http://rosalie.mirthfulconfusion.com/ (what I'm supposed to be working on right now :0 )
http://torkulweef.com
http://labicenter.org/ (I should be working on this one too)

Every bit of change comes from the backend, no file editing at all.

It's not foolproof, but you can do a lot with minimal changes.

I downloaded Suffusion and have tinkered with it a bit. It's an immensely variable beast, isn't it?

Have done some looking in the themeforest and amongst the elegantthemes. Good stuff there. Also just found "thematic" and it's quite lovely.
