The tension in the room was almost palpable. The bar room was packed with people all waiting for the concert. Although most of the people were not here to see Dark Triad, Zac Jackson’s local metal band, he was still excited to be playing. This would be their first gig opening for an actual big name band. They would only get a 25 minute set before the tour openers, but he still couldn’t believe he had made it to even this point. Instead of the usual 200 person crowd they drew, half of which just happened to be at the bar in question, Dark Triad would be playing to close to 2,000 people.
Zac could feel his guts tie themselves into knots, he was so afraid of screwing this up. He reached up to wipe a bead of sweat that fell from his short cropped dark hair. He flicked his green eyes down at his watch, they went on in 5 minutes. He turned to give a last minute pep talk to his band mates. He saw Kyle Thomson their bassist, and David Billings, their drummer staring back at him. For the type of music that Zac really wanted to play they needed a second guitar player and a keyboardist, but at this time he had to make due with what he had. They were great guys, his best friends since before they and Zac were in high school. Now in college, about to graduate in a year, they had come a long way from the kids playing in Zac’s basement, listening to his father and step mother vacillate between praising them on their talent, and complaining about the noise. No matter what anyone said, they had made it, this was their next big step, this gig could get them noticed.
As they stepped out onstage, Zac transformed from the shy quiet boy he usually was, and became the confident front man and guitarist of Dark Triad. Zac could feel the heat of the lights and the weight of the crowd pressing against the stage. The majority of the people in attendance had probably never hard of Dark Triad, but they were here for a metal concert and were ready to headband and rock. Zac strowed to the mic stand, the fluid grace making him almost making him glide, contrary to his lack of confidence, he didn’t fall down and the crowd cheered as he tore into their opening song, an old Pantera song Walk, a song that instantly got the crowd’s attention.
Zac was grinning ear to ear as he sang, yelled, and shredded through the guitar solos on his guitar. This was always his dream, to be a rock star, a guitar god, now if he could only play girls with the confidence he played his guitar he knew his life would be perfect. Perhaps soon, there was a time and place for everything, this was his time to play.
