But what caused the breakdown of the nuclear family?

Natural decay. You know it was called the nuclear family because it came about conceptualy at the same time as nuclear power right?

The reality is it's a natural product of capitalism. I don't even know if it's an unintended consequence. Certainly Ayn Rand who for all her gaffes was not retarded just bitchy thought it was very much intentional and very much desirable.

But what caused the breakdown of the nuclear family?

The nuclear family was effectively destroyed when it became impossible for a family to survive on just one wage. And that is purely down to the greed and exploitation inherent in free market capitalism.

Don't expect him to comprehend what you just said... it would destroy his personal narrative.

Explain. Because I would argue exactly the opposite. That the nuclear family was forced upon us by people who could not survive alone and it's break down (to the extent that it has since single mothers are still viewed problematically and for the moment intentionally so). Prior to the industrial revolution you'd see families that were more akin to clans because you simply needed that kind of manpower on deck.

We can debate if it's a good thing or not. My mom loves snowstorms because families grow closer when they have days at a time where they are forced to survive each other. I love my mom. But I'm not sure my family, especially with any aunts or uncles thrown into Snowmageddon would end with everybody alive instead of turning into reverse Clue. You know the cops show up find one guy alive, he's willing to admit he killed Ms. Scarlett in the Billards room with the revolver but he's still working on how the other eleven people died. He's especially baffled by Mrs. White. He poisoned her, he's sure but she's hanging from the rafters and. . .*falls over* clever bitch switched our drinks.

But hey maybe it would end with us all holding hands and singing Showtunes. Stranger things have never happened.

I'm starting to imagine Donald's SOTU addresses. Comedy gold there, folks. Comedy gold.

Check out Triumph the Insult Dog's campaign show on hulu. Hulu is the easiest way to watch it, but one can watch it on youtube and a ton of other places.

Yes and no. Part of this duel income quest wasn't caused by Capitalism. There are still good jobs out there where one person can support a family. However, most American's are no longer willing to do the work necessary to earn that kind of income.

Can't blame Capitalism ... have to put blame on Materialism

Capitalism is only part of it.
The technology age played a large part. Cable tv, video games, internet. It seperated us and desensitized us to true humanity.
We began to live in an artificial world where conscience and consequences were no big deal.
Media propaganda
Hollywood
A plethora of a new kind of knowledge changed our values.
Things became more important than people.
We learned to live for today and not for our children's tomorrows.
Just a perfect storm that can't be reversed.
Imo

It's not that most Americans are no longer willing to do the work necessary it's that there is now work necessary to earn that kind of income. There wasn't for our parents and grandparents. You could get out of high school and get a blue collar job that would support you and your family. Today good luck with that no college route.

I don't think it separated or desensitized us. Considering all the bitching I get to hear about PC we are more sensitive than ever and certainly more connected in the grand scheme of things. I might spend less time with my immediate family but I'm also still in regular contact with my cousins.

Some of the rest of that is accurate to varying degrees, not that I think people ever really lived for their children's tomorrows. That's just a lie we tell ourselves to feel bad. It's just throughout most of history looking out for your today made your children's tomorrow better.

My grandparents were are in Columbia. I paid for my college with no debt. This is what's wrong with America today. We want hand outs and YOU are not willing to do the work necessary

I give zero shits about Columbia. If you paid for your college with no debt you were pretty damn well off heading in.

But call it hand outs all you want the amount of work necessary is a lot more now than it was then.

You basically have to be a sociopathic overachiever with an incredible set of opportunities in life lining up just right to get out of a hole minus a degree.

Otherwise to get off of welfare paycheck to paycheck survival you're either destroying your health or at extreme risk of losing your life/limb/eyesight at work.

Good Lord, the faculty of Sophist U has gathered...

How did the nuclear family survive in the age where one wage was a poverty wage back before the war bonus of being the only economy untouched after WWII?

Was it that old-time religion and the morality that anchored the family?

It surely wasn't secular moral relativism...

Good night John Boy!

Yep. Well or be stupid lucky.

It didn't. You're of course ignoring our answers and attempting to circle back around as if this hasn't been answered.

If Limbaugh told them the Sun would rise in the West tomorrow, they'd spend the rest of the day harping about how the East is actually the West.

Yes, Donald Trump Won Latinos Over Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articl...over-marco-rubio-and-ted-cruz-here-s-why.html

"Here’s Why. Why the Republican frontrunner just might be able to build on his success with Latino voters in Nevada—and win the White House as a result."

"We know about the Reagan Democrats. In the 1980s, union members in blue states defied their leaders in organized labor to vote for the 40th president.

Well, in Nevada, the first of the early primary or caucus states with a significant number of Latino voters, we’ve caught a glimpse of a similar phenomenon—one that few could have imagined when Donald Trump entered the race for the Republican presidential nomination.

You may recall that the billionaire businessman launched his foray into politics eight months ago with a speech that declared that Mexican immigrants were “bringing drugs” and “bringing crime,” and that they were “rapists,” criminals and murderers even though, he assumed, “some are good people.” Now, it seems, some of those good people are enamored of their tormentor.

Behold, the Trump Latinos.

According to CNN entrance polls, among Latino Republican voters in the Silver State, John Kasich got 4 percent, Ted Cruz 18 percent, and Marco Rubio 29 percent. Trump got an astounding 44 percent.

I can only think of two people who don’t seem surprised by Trump’s strong showing with Latinos.

The first is Trump himself, who has been saying for months that he would do well with Hispanics. In fact, Trump would often point to early polling from Nevada that showed him beating his rivals decisively with Hispanics, which is what happened.

Trump has a theory. He thinks that Hispanics know that he will create jobs and that many of these jobs will go to Hispanics because his years in business have taught him that Hispanics are especially hard workers.

The other person who saw this coming was me. Two weeks ago, I wrote a piece for this site that looked at the phenomenon of “Latinos for Trump.” That piece was criticized by everyone from white Democrats to Latino activists to Republicans supported other candidates.

Now, if you look at the entrance polls out of Nevada, it seems clear that these critics don’t know much about Latinos."

"Meanwhile, we shouldn’t be terribly surprised that the chattering class completely missed the “Latinos for Trump” story. Much of it fell into their blind spot.

The East Coast media don’t get Latinos. Neither do the political parties. Ditto for most commentators, pundits, and political strategists. In fact, just about everyone with an opinion has the wrong opinion about Latinos.

For instance, they all seem to think that Latinos are demanding from government and other institutions that they be siphoned off into their own separate group and showered with preferential treatment and special accommodations. Not true.

Latinos don’t want to apart from America, and they aren’t in conflict with America. They are the essence of America.

If Donald Trump figures this out, and learns how to talk to these people with respect, there will be no stopping him. And he might as well start redecorating the Oval Office."
