Heroes come in all shapes and sizes (IC)

Well ... that could have gone better!

Venar-surr looked to Nas … he nodded to her … dragon body language to indicate “go ahead … and good luck!”

“We rescued Admir from two demon flyers. The foul creatures have been killed. Your son is an excellent flyer … you should be proud of him” Venar-surr answered to the mother dragon.

Admir puffed up a bit at the compliment “Yes mother they killed them both … the humans helped too.”

The mother red dragon seemed to relax at these words … but the comment about the humans helping draw all the red dragons eyes to the humans. The female dragon placed her head in a high position and spoke again.

“I’m Ix-thot… these are my two brothers Eir-thot and Atar-thot, all from the Makeska volcano lands” Ix-thot stated “I await your answer on why you are here and … add a question about why two humans are here?” She asked.

Venar-surr dripped her head in a sign of peace and nodded. She also switched to the common tongue “This is Isca, a human from the great northern woods … a student of Wizard Frunan, the tree friend. The other human is Megan Bloodfrost an Illumian from guild of words society”

Nas bent his head towards the female red dragon in a sign of peace, and then spoke in common.

“Well met Ix-thot, Eir-thot, and Atar-thot … from the Makeska volcano. I’m a dragon with no name … you may call me Nas from the southern dragon tooth mountains.” Nas answered as he returned his head to the high position.

Eir-thot spoke up “Your name is … Nasanthil!”

Nas muscles tensed and he got ready for battle.

But Venar-surr had been prepared for this comment “Well met Ix-thot, Eir-thot, and Atar-thot … from the Makeska volcano.” She said her head bent towards them in a sign of peace, and then spoke “I’m Venar-surr … from the tropical islands in the southern waters. I’m glad to meet all of you. I’m certain you have heard of me” Her head returned to a high position, her chest thrust forward … this posture was a challenge to the red dragons.

All three of the adults stared at her. The debate over Nas’ name forgotten for now … finally Ix-thot spoke “Venar-surr … you have been missing for many years … many have thought you were dead. Now you return … WHY?”

“I wish to free Father dragon. The humans are here to help” She stated bluntly.

“NEVER … we will not permit it” Ix-thot stated flatly.

Megan leaned over to Isca and whispered sarcastically “This is going wonderfully …shall we say something?”

Zarik and Draxx

Zarik and the Baron they made their way to the manager office of the Throbin Hood. As soon as they entered, Eddie, the potbelly little gnome, had just gotten there before them … mostly likely coming from spying on them in the bar… Zarik had to stop himself from laughing when the gnome took a flying leap into a chair behind a desk that had obviously been made for a much larger creature.

Eddie looked all serious as he spoke “Clearly you see talent in my bouncer … I want 100 gold pieces for his services up front. 70% of any bonus he earns and 50% of any treasure acquired.

The baron laughed “We can just take him from you by order of the king! Your terms are non-sense” The baron stated. Zarik placed a hand on the Baron arm.

“What the baron says is true … however … as a visitor and guest I wish to suggest an alternative deal … 100 gold pieces for his services and 2000 gold pieces for the 2 day victory party after we win this battle that I will host at your establishment.”

Eddie eye grew extra wide “Rumors are we are hopeless outnumbered.”

“If that were the case …we’d be evacuating the city not defending it” Zarik pointed out

“We’ll are going win the battle?” Eddie said again not sure.

“Nothing is certain in life … but the baron and I need to make plans if we do” The minotaur said “Deal?” He asked.

“I accept your terms on one condition. Draxx returns to my service after the battle. He has been the best bouncer I have ever had”

“Done” Zarik said smiling as the two shook hands

The two headed back to Draxx, who packed his bags and walked out with them.

Draxx

Draxx followed his new masters towards the castle. Already he was thinking of the battles to come and the fun he could have. For a Kroxigar there was no greater thrill in life than to be in the thick of a good fight. Draxx himself had been selected to be a temple guard at an early age because of his colouring and had received extra training. Now he was out to prove himself before he had to return to continue the boring twenty year ritual that would turn him into a guard.

As they wound their way through the castle Draxx memorized the route so he would be able to retrace his steps. Finally they entered a large room in which was a large table, several couches and chairs, tables with refreshments on them and two people having a conversation.

The first was a woman that would have fetched a very high price at his former place of employment. She was a stunning beauty by human standards and even Draxx who had lived with Humans for a while now, could see her appeal.

The other was an older Human dressed in robes with very pale hair. He radiated a tang of power that he could literally taste and Draxx knew him for what he was. Here was one who knew how to tap into the forces of the cosmos. He would have to keep an eye on him.

As they entered the room the two broke off whatever conversation they had been having and rose to great the Baron and the General. When their eyes fell on Draxx however their words died on their lips. Draxx gave a small throaty laugh but continued to stand behind them waiting to receive further orders.

Burn baby Burn!

Isola and Ardel walked over to the huge lizardman. Isola shook his hand “Welcome … my name is Isola and this is the Wizard Ardel” She explained.

The wizard shook his hand as well “I lived for many years in the great swamp. I have only met a few Kroxigar. This is a pleasure” He stated.

“What is a Kroxigar?” Isola asked the wizard.

“Well … I can explain what I know … but Draxx is the expert. Kroxigars are giant crocodilian lizardmen … Their bodies are massively muscled and their jaw is filled with razor-sharp teeth. Anything caught in a Kroxigar's powerful bite will quickly be torn to pieces as he shakes his head in violent sideways motion. They are exceptionally resilient and can survive blows that would fell a lesser being.

Whilst few in number, Kroxigars are devastating on the battlefield. They can be used as shock troops to break the enemy's battle line, leaving them in tatters. But I don’t think General Zarik will be using Draxx in that fashion.

Zarik smiled “No, Draxx … come here … I need to show you what I have in mind.”

The Baron, Draxx and Zarik looked at the map of the city. The minotaur smiled and explained his plan. “I expect the garliks to surround the city. they will approach the trench with caution … maybe attempt to build bridges over it, so they can attack all side of the city all at once. As the forces approach the newly dug trench. That is when you will light the back fire. You see there will be a straw soaked in oils laid all along here.” The minotaur pointed out the place with the straw. “One spark and all these fields will go up in flames. The Garliks will be trapped between the trench and a wall of fire. The garlik will have been walking over the ground with the oil … and their feet and legs will also be highly flammable. The trench will also be in flames at this point. I hoping this trap will burn up a good part of the army.

When the remaining Garliks get over the trench … a second fire will be set at the city walls and this too will rush at them … they will attempt to run back over their bridges … but we’ll be destroying the bridges before they get to them. Another big part of their army burns up here.

So your main job is to lite the back fire. We have constructed a spider hole here” the minotaur pointed out “for you to hide in. When the time is right … lite the back fires. You’ll be all by yourself, for the most part … and you’ll need to fight your way back to the city. Also I need you to destroy any bridges that we missed.” Zarik explained

“If you are successful you’ll have single handedly kill a huge part of the army!”

“What do you think?” The Minotaur asked Draxx.

Draxx scratched his long jaw with one hand “Garliks can go underground …”

Zarik nodded “Yes ... however Ardel has blocked that way into the city. He also tells me ... that ability can only be done with a few 1000 garliks not the whole army.”

“What about rain?” Draxx asked.

“The oil will burn in a light rain ... however I expect a much lower death rate if it rains. Other questions?” The minotaur asked.

Draxx looked at the map again. It was a good plan but it would need more than him to light the fires.

"There needs too be three other volunteers to help me with the fires. It will work better if we set them at the four points of the compass, that way the fires will spread evenly and trap more of them. Also it will allow us to destroy more bridges as we will have people who can see all around the castle."

The Baron and Zarik nodded at this and made notes.

"I will have to approach a gate at night. I will need a password or a secret way of identifying myself from a distance so I will not be killed by the defenders as will anyone that comes with me."

"Yes we had already thought of that and have some ideas, but we still need some time to perfect them. They should work for others as well," answered the General. " Our main concern is can it be done and will you do it?"

Draxx smiled his toothy grin and saw Isola's shocked look as she saw his rows of sharpened teeth in the light.
"Oh it can be done, and I will do it alone if need be. This promises to be a good fight and I only hope the fire leaves me a few Garliks to kill."

General Zarik clapped the big lizardman on the arm and grinned over at the Baron.
"I asked you to find me a fighter and you bring me a warrior. Now we can really start planning our defense."

The Baron summoned a servant and after a muted discussion motioned Draxx to follow him. "He will lead you to your quarters so you can get some rest. We will get you those volunteers and you can go over your plans with them. For now thank you for your thoughts and we will see you tomorrow."

Draxx bowed his head to the room and followed the servant out.

Devon

He slipped from his hiding place and stepped into the room,

"A Kroxigar, now that is interesting. Didn't know that they still venture out so far from their lands."

He gave Zarik a small smile,

"You really have to start watching your back Zarik, two assassin's have been stopped already. I will not always be around to cover that stubby tail of yours."

He grinned, then looked at the map,

"I have two volunteers that will go with Draxx, experienced Rangers, I would have preferred fire arrows..."

He shrugged,

"But it takes a certain amount of skill to accomplish what could be done by hand. I would suggest that you try and get one of the thieves for Draxx's little group. They know how to strike and dissappear."

He looked at the doorway that Draxx had left through and sighed,

"Two legions of Kroxigar's and we could hold this castle definitely."

He tapped the map,

"My father, brother's and their men have arrived. They came with seven other lords, my estimate is that your ranks have swelled with about seventy men. The larger war parties are still on their way."

He looked at Isola and gave her a smile,

"I hear that they are teasing you a lot about how I got Tina to throw in her lot with us."

Zarik had of coarse known he needed more fire starters … and the use of other techniques to start the fires had been considered and were a backup strategy. But he was not going to reveal all his tricks to everyone. Spies could be anywhere … even in their own ranks … and single points of failure were never a good idea.

Zarik eyes narrowed as he looked at Devon, considering the ranger’s words. He spoke with disappointment in his voice “70 … we face over 100,000!!” he snorted like a bull, frustrated at the impossible situation they were in. “Can they at least shoot a bow? This WHOLE battle plan depends on massing the enemy’s forces and destroying them from a distance. I NEED indirect fire … by the GODS I need ARCHERS!”

Baron Marcus place a hand Zarik’s arm “General Zarik … the Hillsong family can shoot bows and are excellent marksmen. They are also knights and can hold one of the gates into the city. The bravery shown by the lords to join in defense of this city is … remarkable. Our civilian archer training program as shown some success …”

Zarik took a deeper breath, calming down. “Yes … I’m sorry … my last statement was unhelpful. I will go down and meet with them … I’m sorry for my outburst.” Zarik said, but in his heart he knew without more support they were all doomed.

Isola had made it over to Devon and wrapped her arm around him.

“Devon … Zarik and Ardel claim that your proficiency in bed is what won over the thief’s cold heart … But I told them having experienced your pleasures … that the story was completely false. Most likely the poor girl fell asleep during your love making … out of sheer boredom.” Isola said giggling at how naughty she was being.

Everyone looked to see what Devon’s answer would be.

Devon

He arched an eyebrow at her and poked her gently in the side,

"That was not what you said when you were there. Perhaps I should refresh your memory."

He gave her a grin and looked at Zarik,

"Any news on what Maut is doing? I don't like that he has left us and doesn't seem to be returning any time soon."

Isca and Megan listened with their hearts in their throats, five huge dragons, was alarming to say the least. The fact that it might take a turn for the worse at any moment did not help one bit. Nefer meowed softly looking from one speaking dragon to the next. Finally Megan leaned over and whispered sarcastically,

“This is going wonderfully …shall we say something?”

Without taking her eyes off of Ix-thot who flatly stated,

“NEVER … we will not permit it.”

Isca whispered back,

"I think we should....after all we can't do much worse then what our dragons are doing now...talk about giant dragon type egos!. I'm going in....wish me luck!"

Raising her arm, Isca walked over to the two females and stopped right between them. Which of course totally dumbfounded both. Bowing deeply while trying not to shake visibly she cleared her throat and stated,

"I see there is much that we all have to talk about, I suggest that we have a mediator...to prevent emotions from getting out of control..... If you are all agreeable to my suggestion, I, Isca, a well known mage, would be honoured to be the go between person along with my esteemed colleague Megan Bloodfrost ."

She took a quick look in Megan's direction hoping that she would be agreeable to being a co-mediator. Glancing back at the female dragons, Isca waited to see what they would now do. (Everyone knows that it's the females that rule small groups.)

Zarik gets some unexpected help …

The big minotaur looked back at the ranger and spoke with concern “Who can figure out that knight … at some battles he giggles in joy … talking of the souls being sent to “his lady”. Death being a good thing … At others, he seems to follow a voice unheard … telling him to protect the living. I can only hope Maut is raising some undead to help us. But, I cannot count on that … I’m not sure how our forces would fight alongside the undead … you were not with us … but Nas killed both Garlik and undead alike. Maut asked the dragon not to kill his raised undead … you can just imagine the dragon’s answer to that request!”

Zarik just shook his head. Then far off in the distance a horn sounded. The minotaur looked up … The horn sounded again. This time the Baron Marcus heard it too.

“NOOOO!” Zarik gasped … “It cannot be!”

“What is it … who is blowing those horns!” The baron asked as Zarik’s eyes narrowed.

“FRICKING ELVES! … Ask the king to meet me at the city’s western gate … “ Zarik said to the Baron … then he turned to Devon … “Please continue to prevent the assassins from killing me … I need to stay alive long enough to kiss an elf!”

The minotaur burst out of the castle room and hurried to the city’s western gate.

15 minutes later Zarik was joined by King Stoneshield at the gate. As the 6,000 elves marched up the road towards them.

“Amazing … elven archers … just what we needed. The gods have granted us a chance!” The king said.

Zarik turned to him “there are not enough of them … but it is better than none! I have always hated elves … but I swear to the holy bull god … I’m going to kiss princess allonetree right on her mouth when she gets here … I just hope her father does not have a heart attack!”

The king pointed to a small female catwomen leading the elven army to the gate. “Who is that?” The king asked. Haldamir and Bronwym now stood on the other side of the King.

http://forum.literotica.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1167470&d=1359233838

“Her name is Prrip … and I’m guessing she is the reason the elves are here. Look, I see King Enos and Princess Allonetree on ... right side of the formation!” Bronwym said with excitement.

The elven command unit marched up to the gate. Prrip smiled at Zarik. The minotaur smiled and signed back to her saying “You are now the one freeing me from a cage … thank you!”

Prrip nodded her head “You are welcome” she said with her hands.

General Zarik introduced Prrip to King Stoneshield.

Next King Enos dressed in his red and silver battle armor came forward.

“It is good to see you again … your heroics against the Mesoblubron have been duely recorded.” the elven king said

Zarik shook the elven king’s hand and introduced him to the human king.

Next the elven princess stepped forward; Allontree’s long blonde hair was braided held under her silver helm. Her long tapered elf ears were clearly visible, her face still looked prefect, her pale skin flawless, but unlike the last time he had seen her … she was covered in armor and a sword hung from her belt, a bow on her back.

“Zarik … the minotaur … the riddle master… and now general. It is good to see you again” She said

“Princess …” Zarik said calmly and politely, nodding his head

“I’m at a loss for words to thank you for this assistance…” He looked up at the 6,000 elven warriors arrayed at the gate. “I must show you how thankful I am!” He said and reached out with both hands picked her up off the ground and tossed her into the air. Re-catching her a moment later, he smoothly kissed her on the lips!

“IT IS GREAT TO SEE YOU!!” He roared.

King Stoneshield stepped forward “General Zarik!!” he commanded

Zarik winked at the princess and placed her back on the ground.

“Sire … my emotions of gratitude overwhelmed me …” Zarik stated “I apologize”

Princess Allontree smiled and effortlessly shook the human king’s hand “King Stoneshield … It is so good to see you again … how is your daughter?” She asked.

Draxx and Ardel … Pyromaniacs?

Later that evening … there was a knock upon Draxx’s The wizard, a catwomen, a ranger and a thin female with dark red hair entered Draxx’s chambers. The wizard had a smile on his face … looked at the fearsome creature.

“Draxx … I would like to introduce the other fire starters … this here is Prrip. She will be lighting the fires on the northern section of the city,”

The large lizardman nodded his head.

“And this is Tina Blair” the wizard said as the woman’s piercing blue eyes were glued on the huge lizardman.

“And this is Wind Griffenrider” the wizard finished up introducing the ranger.

“In addition … I have some items that might be helpful.” The old wizard offered as his placed a large bag on the floor and pulled open the strings at the top. Inside were a lot of walnuts. “These walnuts … are not as they appear.” He explained as he grabbed one … and smiled … then he spoke a word at the walnut “3” he said and threw the walnut into Draxx’s fire place. “1-2-3 …” he counted at 3 … the walnut exploded in a fireball that almost caught the coffee table on fire.

"What are you plans?" The wizard asked

Dragons argue … like a bunch of squabbling orcs!!

"A Mediator … what is that?’ Admir asked his mother.

“A DUMB human idea” Atar-thot, one of the male red dragons stated before the female dragon could answer. “Dragons solve disputes via combat!”

Ix-thot sighed at her brother's statement, and answered her son’s question “The term "mediator" refers to a third party that helps others to reach agreement. Participation is typically voluntary. And the mediator acts as a neutral third party and facilitates rather than directs the agreement.”

Atar-thot spoke up again “Neither one of these snacks … are neutral” the red dragon stated. “And I will not be controlled in this way”

“Nor I” Eir-thot stated

Megan stepped forward “Dragons from the Makeska volcano … we are all on the same side … all of us here want what is best for Father Dragon. I have spoken to him … and he wants us to free him.”

This was the wrong thing to say … all the three dragons became more defensive at that comment.

“What! … how?” Ix-thot asked.

Isca pulled out the Heereel KuRuck. There were gasps from the three red dragons. “In the right hands … the key can communicate with Father Dragon” Isca explained.

“That key is EVIL … and should be destroyed!” Eir-thot stated advancing on Isca.

Nas’ eyes narrowed, and he moved to stop the big red dragon. “The human speaks the truth … I have heard Father Dragon ask to be freed.” Nas affirmed Megan’s statement.

“FATHER DRAGON NEEDS NO HELP!!” Eir-thot roared

“PRIDE BEFORE THE FALL … IT IS THE WEAKNESS OF DRAGONS … LISTEN TO YOURSELF … YOU ARE A FOOL … EIR-THOT” Venar-surr roared back. Both Isca and Megan now had their hands over their ears as the roars echoed across the barren volcanic landscape in front the massive doors leading into the mountain. Nefer head ducked back inside Isca backpack for protection. Even the small wee dragons ducked their heads as the adult dragons roared at each other.

“NO MORE ROARING” Ix-thot the female dragon ordered “We are dragons … not a bunch of squabbling orcs!”

Her massive red dragon head lowered to the level of the two mages. Both mages could smell the fire and brimstone from her breath “I wish to speak to father dragon” Ix-thot asked.

Megan looked over to Isca. She had thought about what had happened the last time she had touched the key. As an Illumian, magic of the key connected her to Father Dragon. This was because of her Illumian nature … and would not happen if Isca or a Dragon touched the key. The last encounter had almost destroyed her mind.

“I will try to reconnect with Father Dragon. I do not know if he will reply … and I can only connect for a very short time.” Megan stated her mind made up.

Isca looked over to her, concern written all over her face “Are you sure? This almost destroyed your mind last time …”

Megan shook her head “We must free Father Dragon … life on this world depends on it … he is the only god that can stop the demonlords.”

Megan grabbed the key from Isca's hand. Suddenly her mind was inside someone else’s mind … the massive intelligence of Gragathor, of Father Dragon. She screamed as the dragon’s mind swallowed her up! Their thoughts were one.

Megan had put her mind in a do-loop repeating “I’m Megan Frostblood … I’m Megan Frostblood … I’m Megan Frostblood” Hoping Father dragon would remember the name …

Father dragon had waited for the return of Megan Frostblood. And when he felt her return … he separated his mind from hers as much as was possible.

He knew everything she knew in less than a second … and he could feel the energy of the dragons near the key … He could tasted reds … and the emerald/copper and the red/bronze … He threw a thought at those dragons … the same simple thought as before “Free me”

All the dragons heard the thought this time … Their god was talking to them directly. They heard the voice in their heads … it was an ancient voice of great power and importance … the message was a simple one … “Free me!”

Megan mind was losing control against the dragon’s … she could feel her mind slipping away. She needed to get one more thought to him … she willed mind to think about how the key worked … forcing Gragathor to understand what was going to happen. The dragon knew it all already … he simple thought back at her “don’t worry”

Isca knew the connect could not last any longer. All the dragon’s except Nas had gasped … she suspected Father Dragon had connected with them … So she grabbed the key from Megan’s hands. She hoped the connect had been long enough.

Megan fell to the ground … her whole body twitching … as her mind tried to reconnect to her body. Isca put the key into a pocket and went to her “MEGAN …” she shouted and wish Isola was here to cast a healing spell.

“AHHHHH” Megan answered as her body reconnected her mind. Her hands were now on her head… if she had a massive headache.

Venar-surr moved to Megan and casted a healing spell on her. It only removed some of Megan’s discomfort … mind repair was not something a spell to mend. The big red female, Ix-thot, eyes were wide in amazement; She was in awe of the voice she had heard.

“It is true … Father Dragon needs our help!” She said.

Eir-thot, and Atar-thot both turned on her “Do I need to remind you … this is Venar-surr … the crazy betrayer … and Nasanthil the ill-conceived! What they purpose is a crazy ill-conceived betrayal of all of dragon kind! That voice means nothing … it may even be the demonlords trying to trick us!” Eir-thot suggested

“Or … your big fat dragon pride … is preventing you from seeing the truth. I think that is a much simpler explanation.” Venar-surr chided the male red dragon. Both Eir-thot and Atar-thot puffed up their chests at the remark … getting more upset.

Ix-thot turned to her brothers “These two … have done nothing but help … they saved Admir and brought him back to me. They offered mediation which you did not wish to consider. I asked to talk to Father Dragon … and at great peril to themselves … we heard his voice … Why do you continue to doubt them?” She asked.

“This whole idea that Father Dragon needs help is ridiculous” Atar-thot growled.

Nas was getting mroe angry as he listened to the dragon’s debate … these reds continued to use his hated name … Nasanthil. He just wanted to tear them into pieces and smash their heads into the mountain side to make them stop. His blood was boiling. He also knew that talking the two male reds into allowing them to free Father Dragon was not going to work. Even he, was still having trouble with the idea father dragon needed help. And he had been with Venar-surr and heard all her arguments for days.

This problem needed to be solved the old fashion way … via combat. Nas decided that this was the only way. There was only two things that bothered him about this approach … the first was could he win … and the second … was he making this decision because he just wanted to kick their asses.

“I have a way around this impasse” Nas growled. “I accept your proposal of a trail by combat. Winner chosen by Ix-thot or the surrender of an opponent. Choose which of you wish to face me.”

“Ill-conceived …!!” Atar-thot said “I shall destroy you … you have no chance!”

Eir-thot turned to Atar-thot “Too bad you will not be facing him… I shall be the wee dragon’s opponent!” Eir-thot said insulting Nas for his smaller size.

Venar-surr was about to say something but Isca beat her to it “NO … Eir-thot you SHALL FACE ME!” Isca said returning to her feet as she helped Megan up. Isca had both her hands on her hips.

All the dragons including Venar-surr and Nas could not believe Isca challenge.

“Isca …I think I’m a better choice … ” Venar-surr said trying to talk her out of it.

“No … Eir-thot will need your healing magic after this combat” Isca said with total confidence. “Trust me Venar-surr … and put aside your dragon pride … I can win this battle … I rescued you from the tapestry … and I will not fail you now!”

Venar-surr was totally flabbergasted. “Magic does not work on Dragons … Isca how will you …”

Isca put up her hand. “I’m well aware of what dragons can do … now you will become aware of what a Wizard can do!” As if on cue, Nefer popped her head out of the backpack and meowed confidently at the emerald copper dragon!

Ix-thot raised her head as she looked at the two pairs and spoke in a loud voice. "Alright, the rules are simple. You are not allowed to kill your opponent. If you are knocked unconscious, or are down for ten seconds you lose. This is individual combat your partner can not help you during the battle. Everyone clear on the rules?" Nods came from both pairs. "Good, may the truth be found during this battle. Begin!"

A sudden wind swept across the canyon floor as Nas sprang into the air … one of his hind legs landing on Atar-thot head and slammed it to the ground … as he got into the air quickly. “Don’t call me … Nasanthil” Nas yelled as he flew into the sky.

Then the bigger red leapt after him … Megan watched in awe as the immense winged dragon rose majestically and soared swiftly after Nas. Atar-thot was a nightmarish creature whose body seemed to fill the entire sky; Nas would need all his skill to defeat this much bigger dragon.

She looked for Isca … but the young mage was gone. Eir-thot also looked ... surprise on his dragon face ... where had the mage had gone too ... she had been here only a second eariler.

Isca and Megan stood to the side as the great dragons went on and on with their bickering. Isca knew something had to be done, she got her invisibility cloak ready to slip on, whispering to Megan as she helped her up,

"I see that there may be some pretty explosive goings on about to happen, get over to that dead lava pit over there and take cover, I'm going in!"

Just as Venar-Surr was about to challenge Eir-Thot's insult, Isca stepped in with hands on her hips she shouted,

“NO … Eir-thot you SHALL FACE ME!”

Of course everybody was totally taken aback, Venar-Surr tried to talk Isca out of it by responding,

“Isca …I think I’m a better choice … ”

With her eyes on Eir-thot Isca smothered that idea,

“No … Eir-thot will need your healing magic after this combat” Isca said with total confidence. “Trust me Venar-surr … and put aside your dragon pride … I can win this battle … I rescued you from the tapestry … and I will not fail you now!”

Nefer was getting ready for battle by puffing up her wee body and growling. Venar-Surr tried again to change Isca's mind but she would have none of it, putting up her hand,

“I’m well aware of what dragons can do … now you will become aware of what a Wizard can do!”

Nefer backed up her mistress with a loud rumbling "Meow" Ix-thot stated the rules of combat getting everyone's nod of acceptance, then she shouted, "Good may the truth be found during this battle.... Begin!"

As everyone watched Nas and Atar-thot fly off Isca took that moment to slip the invisibility cloak on, then started conjuring up her now famous fire balls. As Eir-thot looked around for the little mage, she smiled to herself while swiftly running up to the dragon's tail end. Taking a big breath she ran lightly up his back before he could understand what was happening. Because he had been looking downwards for her, she was able to get right up behind his head and grasp onto one of his spikes with her left hand. Next she was able to tightly wrap her legs partly around his huge neck and lucky for her, there was a deep ridge for her bottom to sit in. Nefer came out from under the cloak and jumped onto his forehead, digging her nails deeply into his thick horny scales.

Now Eir-thot finally clued in that Isca or something was perched on the back of his head. He roared in anger, turning this way and that. No matter how fast he swung his head back and forth the little human would not become dislodged. With her right hand, Isca produced the first fire ball in semi liquid form, then reached forward and let it drip down into the dragon's right eye.

Eir-thot's reaction to his eye burning like hell was to roar in pain and jump up into the air, frantically flying about trying to blink the wet fire out of his eye. Nefer swatted him with one paw just for good measure. The dragon was in great discomfort and kept on flying crazily roaring his pain. After awhile Isca cast a water spell, reached out again and let it drip down onto Eir-thot's burning eye. The pain quickly eased off, giving the dragon time to get un-believably angry, he shouted and flapped around while Megan and Venar-Surr watched from the ground. Both were trying to keep themselves from bursting out laughing, knowing things could change for the worst in an instant.

When Eir-thot calmed down enough for Isca to be heard she leaned forward asking,

"Eir-thot...do you surrender this battle to me?

For an answer she just got a bellowing roar, she frowned and got her liquid fire spell going again. Nefer lay down and chewed on the base of one of his spikes. Unfortunately for Eir-thot who was your typical stubborn dragon, Isca had to repeat the "Fire in the Eye" strategy four more times. Each time she would ask him the same question and each time got the same answer, until she was about to burn his eye for the 6th time. When he realized she was going to give it to him again, he hissed,

"NO....STOP....I HAVE HAD ENOUGH....I SURRENDER TO YOU ISCA WIZARD....I SURRENDER!"

Isca smiled as Nefer happily purred, sitting up she now said to the sore and weary dragon,

"Good....these are my terms;

1. You do not harm me or my companions....no grudges!
2. You will listen to what Venar-Surr has to say.
3. You will help us to free Father Dragon.

Do you accept these conditions ...or do I keep on with our battle? I assure you...I have an endless supply of magic."

With a giant sigh Eir-thot bowed his great head and hissed,

"I surrender ...the battle is yours ...Isca the Mage!"

With that being said, he flew down, landing beside Venar-Surr, blinking his sore eye as he did. Nefer jumped back onto Isca's shoulder as she nimbly stood up and made her way down the back of the huge dragon, while slipping the cloak off and putting it away. Once on the ground again, she glanced at Venar-Surr and politely asked,

"If you could heal Eir-thot's eye, I would greatly appreciate it."

Spying Megan coming out of the pit she had taken refuge in, Isca made her way over to her where they found semi comfortable rock to lean against and watched as Venar-Surr did her healing.

I have left off Draxx's rassping way of talking for two reason's. One it will becoming annoying to type all the time and two probably annoying to read. So from now on just imagine it when he talks.

Draxx sized up the people who had been introduced to him.

The female Leopard warrior looked very capable. All lean muscle and with a hunters look in her eye, he was sure she would be an asset.

The Ranger was typical of the kind. Thin and muscular with eyes that took in everything around them. Having a ranger was a good idea as they were used to working alone and this one seemed capable.

The last female was a bit of a mystery to him. Oh he knew she was a fighter, her body and the way she stood betrayed that. What puzzled him was the way she tried to glare him down while at the same time noting where every exit in the room was and how everyone was positioned in the room. He had seen similar men at the brothel on occasions but they had never caused any trouble so he hoped she wouldn't.

The wizards nut trick changed his plans slightly, but only in the way of making it a little easier to start the fires."The plan is going to be very simple. We will hide out in our holes until we receive a signal from the castle. I will be suggesting a series of trumpet blasts. This will have the effect of drawing their eyes to the town as well. Then we emerge and now thanks to the wizards new trick we can lay a trail of nuts along the edge of the field from one gate to the next. We need to practice running the area at night to see how long it takes the slowest person to do this because i want all of the nuts to go off as close together as possible."

"After that we stay hidden and pick off any that try to rush through the flames. Then as the flames start dying down move forward and try to destroy any bridges that you see. Use the nuts, I want us to have a lot Wizard, and set them so that you can be in darkness ten paces away when they go off to keep safe. Only fight when you have too. Remember the bridges will be getting attacked from the town walls too so be careful."

"When the second wave of oil is lit throw all your remaining walnuts as far over the trench as you can to add to the confusion and flames then hide yourselves. We will meet up in front of the western gate on the other side of the trench on the night after the attack at midnight. If you are not there we will assume you are dead or captured. From there we head over the trench and make our way to the gate and back in to the city."

"Any questions?"

The woman called Tina immediately piped up. "How do we get back into the city without being killed?"

"That is being arranged and will be told to us just before we go out."

Prrip motioned at the Lizardman and he turned his head and looked at her. She mimed running really fast and pointed at her then slowly and pointed at him and then an explosion and then shrugged her shoulders.

"I understand what you are saying my lady but as I said we can.... wait," Draxx turned to the wizard "Can Prrip actually talk and i mean verbally. If not your nuts are of no use to her and I will need to think up a new strategy for her or you will need to cast a different spell on hers."

Nas

Ash and smoke filled all of Nas' senses. The two great dragons had battled around the low hills of sabretooth peak. This area had once had beautiful meadows and grazing sheep… now only blackened grass and some sheep bones remained. Smoke filled the air … making it black … as ash flakes floated along on the whim of the breeze.

The battle had already raged for an hour, Nas was beginning to realize his skills and intensity could not overcome the massive brute he faced. He needed to change tactics. His mind was struggling with what else he could try to win this contest.

Both dragons circled each other flapping their gigantic wings at a steady pace. They were both savoring the break, and each was waiting for their opponent to strike first. Nas decided to try something he had discard earlier … a physical strike against the much large opponent. He swooped in using as much speed as he could and struck first, biting at Atar-thot wing and then slashing with his tail at his side. The red dragon dodged to the right escaping the bite but receiving a scratch from Nas’ tail along his side. He counter attacked by swinging his tail to meet Nas’ forelegs. Nas gripped Atar-Thot's tail then swung it back at him. Atar-thot spun in the air losing altitude but with one flap of his massive wings returned in a rage to Nas with his jaw ready about to chomp down Nas’ neck.

Nas dodged at the exact right time, missing the powerful jaws of his opponent. Atar-thot was stunned when his jaws clamped shut on nothing. He slashed with his wing claw at Nas’ face. Blood sprayed out as a cut opened up. But Nas was now above Atar-thot and swiftly flew down. He rammed him causing the red to plummet to the ground below. Atar-thot hit hard, and pain rang throughout his whole body. The red dragon stumbled back to his feet then looked up at Nas. Above, Nas roared in triumph.

"This battle isn't over yet…" The angry red roared back. As Nas flew down to meet Atar-thot on the ground. Nas knew he could best this dragon … his last maneuver must have wounded him. The huge red dragon roared in anger as Nas landed and then attacked Nas with furious slashes. Nas did the same followed by a tail smash, but Atar-thot caught Nas’ tail in his powerful jaws. Nas cried out as blood oozed from his tail, Nas's fore leg smashed into Atar-thot and removed his aw from his tail. But the damage was done. The two tumbled across the ground with Atar-thot pinning Nas down, then looked into his face and laughed.

"Now you will surrender wee dragon!" He asked. But the look in Nas eyes said that this battle wasn’t over yet.

“Everything depends on freeing father dragon … you big dumb sun lizard!”

Atar-thot towered over Nas. He sank his claws deeper into Nas’ chest and grinned. Nas moaned as the claws inflicted more pain on his weakening body.

"Did you really think you could beat me?” Atar-thot asked with a slight laugh in his voice.

"Yeah," muttered Nas desperately … Nas was a bronze-red dragon … thus far he had used his red dragon abilities to attack Atar-thot. Now frantic to free himself he used his bronze dragon “fog-cloud” breath. He never had found it a useful weapon, but he tried it now … to blind Atar-thot. Then Nas smashed Atar-thot head with his wings and fore claws, the red dragon loosened his grip for just a few seconds, but that was all he needed. He used his back legs to come up under Atar-thot and with a tremendous push … flung the massive red off his body.

Freed … Nas got up and took off … flying as fast as he could out of the fog cloud. “STUPID …. STUPID … STUPID!!” Nas screamed at himself in his head. His arrogance and pride had almost caused him to lose this contest. He could smell his own blood dripping from his chest, and tail where Atar-Thot had clawed and bit him! “Pride before the fall.” He thought … that was the human saying. It was true. He had made that mistake. It was the main weakness of dragons. That was the key! he realized. "Hopefully, he was not too wounded to execute his new tactics" he thought.

Atar-thot now flew after Nas using his gigantic wings to chase down his wounded opponent. But he was not quick enough. Nas made it to the volcanic lava fields in time. He blew out another large fog cloud … Obscuring the entire landscape.

He flew just under the thick cloud … his head above it. The trap set … He ROARED at Atar-thot “STUPID SUN-LIZARD!”

Atar-thot was pretty mad at himself too … having had the smaller dragon almost defeated … and then tricked out of his victory.

"THIS BATTLE ENDS NOW!” Snarled Atar-thot driving down at Nas.

"FOR YOU!” Shot back Nas as his head ducked under the fog. Atar-Thot was angry and would not let Nas escape this time. He drove at him with immense speed, his wings folded … as he plunged into the fog bank. Suddenly within the fog bank loomed a rock pentacle Atar-thot could not avoid it and he smashed into it. With a grunt of pain … the red dragon bounced of the pentacle … shattering the pentacle … and then he smashed into the ground below.

“Pride before the fall” Nas said taunting the red dragon as he flew over him.

Atar-thot roared in anger and leapt after him … Nas headed through the fog to the methane vents … Atar-thot was closing … seeing just enough of Nas to follow him. Atar-thot knew the fog was hurting his chances to win this battle … he needed to slow Nas down. A good blast of fire should do the trick. Nas slow down over the Methane vents and heard Atar-thot blast out a great jet of fire … Nas ducked behind a rock out cropping just as the methane gas exploded … Atar-thot had not expected the explosion and was caught in the blast. He again crashed to the ground groaning in pain.

“Your arrogance and pride caused you to fall … oh great and dumb sun-lizard” Nas said again taunting the red dragon as he flew over him. Atar-thot screamed in anger but was slow to take off and chase Nas.

Nas headed back to the massive doors to Father Dragon’s lair. He had seen something near that spot that might work. He hoped this time the dumb red dragon would get the message … as Nas was running out of tricks. He lands near a big rock slide … with huge boulders. One space between the boulders was just big enough for him to fit. He went into the space and knew there was just enough room for him to pop out behind the bolder on the opposite side … but he needed to wait for Atar-thot.

Atar-thot arrived moments later … and laughed “Nasanthil … you have picked a bad hiding spot …I can see your blood trail leading behind that boulder. Now you have no place to run!” Atar-thot landed and moved towards the space between the boulders … getting ready to burn the smaller dragon out of the hiding spot.

As Atar-thot got close enough Nas popped up behind the bolder and gave pushed a bunch of smaller boulders a push ... they rained down on top of the approaching red dragon. The small boulders pelted Atar-thot … and one larger one hit Atar-thot right on his head and knocked the huge monster out.

“Don’t call me … Nasanthil” Nas snarled as he looked down at the knocked out red dragon. Ix-thot and Venar-surr arrived having watched the final part of the battle from the area near the great doors.

I declare you the winner” Ix-thot stated … “Atar-thot has been down for more than 10 seconds.”

Venar-surr body glowed as she healed Nas and then healed Atar-thot “He’s still going to have a really bad headache.” The emerald copper dragon said.

“How did Isca do?” Nas asked fearing the worst. Venar-surr smiled “She won in 10 minutes and has been resting for over an hour. I must admit … my dragon pride was hurt by the ease of her victory. We can learn much from humans!”

“Yes” Nas scuffed “Like do they taste better fried or boiled!”

Ardel knows about pussies … he found about them in a book!

Ardel laughed and then explained to Draxx “Yes Prrip can talk … the cat people language requires vocal noises and body movements and positions most races can’t reproduce. Signing is the best way to overcome that gap. I have set her walnuts to her language. Once you speak a number to the walnut … the timer is started … so if you say 10 … you have 10 seconds. If you say 2 … you only have 2 seconds. You must say the number directly at the walnut.”

Tina now stepped forward “If anyone needs a little extra camouflage … that can be arranged.” She place three “cloaks of blending” over one of Draxx chairs. The cloaks took on the same color and pattern on the chair after a few seconds … blending into the room.

“Neat trick” The ranger, Wind Griffenrider said and grabbed a cloak. “Nice to see the thieves’ guild is helping out … and not trying to make a profit.”

Tina winked at him “How do you know we are not making a profit?”

The ranger grinned “Good point”

Wind turned to Draxx and asked “Anyway for us to communicate back to the castle … if something goes wrong?”

King Stoneshield’s War Council.

All the leaders were sitting around a table in the king’s chambers. The table had a large map of the city on it. King Stonesheild stood up. “I call this war council to order … General Zarik… and Baron Marcus please update everyone on the preparation made to defend the city. And the suggested assignments for each sector.

General Zarik and Baron Marcus stood up. Baron Marcus described the known enemy strengths … defensive structures and tactics planned. Then General Zarik spoke.

"I shall go through the command structure first. King Ronar Stoneshield is commander of all forces. Only he can call for a retreat … or a change in the defensive posture. King Enos is second in command should anything happen to King Stoneshield.

Baron Marcus and I are the tactical commanders of this defense. We will not be at the same place during the battle … to minimize the chance both of us get taken out. I shall be with King Stoneshield and the Baron with King Enos.”

Zarik paused … there were no comments … so he continued “We have divided the city into sectors. Here are the suggested assignments.

Lord Hillsong … and family will command the forces in the northern section.

“Princess Allonetree will command the eastern section, I believe this section will see the most combat” Zarik stated. There was some small grumbling at that comment.

“Col Yebrs of the first brigade of the horn legion will command the southern section” Zarik continued. The grumbling grew louder.

“Devon Hillsong will command the western section.” There were gasps all around the table, followed by some “NO” at this selection. Zarik put up his hand “Please let me finish … thank you” He said

"We have limited mage support … presently it is only Wizard Ardel and Ikarus, and a hand full of minor magic users. Should Megan and Isca make it back in time, they will be added to that force. They will be centrally located at the start of the battle … and once the mesobulbrons are defeated … they will split up and join each sector. When they are centrally located … they can be called upon, should you need them.

Isola, Brock, Gemini will be defending the mages.

Captain Irtheel and Bronwyn are in command of the civilian archer brigade. They will be located in the towers and high building in the city. Please call upon them if you need help.

The King’s Daughter, Princess Tamina, and Lord Hava will be manning the escape tunnel and lead the resistance movement should we fail.

I have completed the suggested assignments … I’m open for questions and discussion” Zarik finished. The room exploded into shouts and alternative command selection ideas.

Devon

During this commotion one of the guards suddenly broke rank, nobody seemed to notice this as the guard came directly at Zarik. Two steps from Zarik an arrow materialized in the guard's throat, driving him back and into the wall. Devon stepped from his hiding place, shouldering his bow, his eyes met that of his father and he gave a curt nod.

"General Zarik, I would like to decline, I think I should be by your side...or perhaps just slightly behind it to prevent this kind of things to keep happening."

This raised a few eyebrows and more voices added to the tumult,

"SILENCE!"

Devon's voice thundered through the room and the fist he had slammed on the table sounded like it cracked the wood.

"Gentlemen and ladies, please. If you have a grievance, handle it like the educated people you are. This barbarous shouting only causes confusion and anger."

He bowed to the two kings,

"My lords, I beg your forgiveness for the harsh interruption."

He turned to Zarik,

"I can see in your eyes that you have no other option, so I will have to take the command you ask of me. Once this battle start you better make certain that you have eyes behind your head and a blade you trust to protect it."

He looked over the assembly,

"Now please, let us discuss the assigned positions and see if there is a flaw in General Zarik's plans."

Draxx looked more warily at Tina. So that was her story. She was a member of the thieves guild, and was here looking out for their interests. Draxx didn't like thieves very much. They tended to lie and cheat, something he found abhorrent. To Draxx his word was his honour so once it was given he did what he said. These thieves tended to say one thing and do whatever the hell they wanted. He would have to watch this woman closely and rely on her not at all.

He turned back to Wind and gave him one of his small smirks. "If you expect help from the castle you can forget it. Once we are out there we are on our own. They will be busy enough fighting their own battles to worry about us. Take a cloak and stick to the plan that will be our best chance."

Turning to Prrip he bowed. "I did not mean to cause any offense My lady, I was merely concerned about the plan and your safety. As you can tell I know all to well the feeling of being an outcast in a how shall we say, Human shaped world. Now that I know the nuts will work for you as well the plan can stand. As for your concern yes I am slower than you which is why we will run the course several times in the dark. Then we will see how long it takes the slowest of us. That is the time we use. So if i take 30 seconds to run between gates then everybody drops there first nut saying 35 and drops at intervals with 5 less seconds until the gate where it is 5. then take cover. This way they should all go off together or near enough."

Prrip nodded her head in understanding and took her own cloak. She would not need it during the night but during the day it may prove useful.

Draxx picked up a cloak as well but one look told him it would never fit him. Well that was fine with him, he preferred open fighting to skulking around anyway.

"I suggest you all get some sleep. We will need to practice tomorrow night and then get our final orders before going to our hidey holes."

After Devon actions ... there was a more structured series of arguments about the sector commanders. The elves, particularly King Enos did not want his daughter in command in any sector. Princess Allonetree ended that debate by stating “I did not come to defend this city by sitting in my room. I shall be on the frontlines fighting the Garliks hand to hand … if you do not allow me to command a sector.”

King Enos smiled, know he had been defeated "You have my blessing as sector commander"

Some of the human lords and barons did not want their troops under the command of a minotaur or elf in any sector. This compliant was overcome with the counter argument that the minotaur and elves made up almost half the defending force. Many of them would be under human command in different sectors. After some grumbling ... consensus was reached.

But strangely the worst selection Zarik had made was placing Devon in charge of any forces. All the knights banded together stating Devon had made his choice not to be a warrior. He was not trained in large Army maneuvers and his troops would not respect his leadership. Earl Lexiton was the most out spoken. Earl was a prominent land holder and looked about 50. The Earl was somewhat portly, a barrel-chested man slightly less than six feet tall, with receding brown hair. He was smoking a small pipe and spoke in a pompous manner.

“I should be in command of the western sector … I’m the ranking knight here and by birthright I should lead. With all respect to Devon” The earl stated firmly looking towards Devon and Lord Hillsong.

“Actually Earl Lexiton … Duke Worthington is the ranking knight in the city” One of the other knight’s stated.

“Yes …. But he can barely walk …. He is stooped over with age … and can not even weld his sword anymore … he is too old.” The Earl countered.

Zarik walked over and pulled the arrow out of the dead guard's throat ... there was a thud as the body hit the floor. The room was quiet once more.

“I selected Devon on his skill in combat and his recent knowledge of Garlik tactics and capabilities. I’m unfamiliar with human rank structure and customs” Zarik said as he studied the arrow covered in blood ... then he turned to Devon and Lord Hillsong “Thoughts ... pros and cons on Earl Lexiton assuming command of the western sector?”

Devon

He crossed his arms over his chest and looked calmly at the knights,

"What they fail to realize is that I was trained as a knight, I even commanded a squad and never have I lost a man who listened to me. Now I am unfit to command knights just because I became a Ranger?"

He scoffed softly and leaned onto the table, his fists resting on the table,

"Just because I am not a knight, does not make me unfit to lead. Which one of you will want to test me?"

There was no answer, so he pushed back from the table to stand again,

"Pros: The earl has experience, the men respect him, he is a leader, has the ear of most lords."

He smirked slightly,

"Cons: He is too attached to his knights, they have no ranged training, they have no idea how the Garliks fight, with all respect due to the Earl, he is too old and unfit to defend the walls..."

There was a loud exclamation from several lords and knights as he said this, he arched an eyebrow,

"You will not be using horses, will be on foot. How many of you will be able to fight a heated battle continuously for six hours at the least?"

He motioned to the younger knights,

"You perhaps, what happens if a defensive wall collapse? The enemy gains a foothold. What happens when the commander is the one who falls because he can't lift his weapon nor shield to defend himself?"

He made the motion of a falling wall with his hands, the meaning clear. It was the truth, but the truth also earned him a lot of hard glares.

"It's stuck ... give it a shove!"

All the dragons regrouped in front of the massive stone doors leading into the mountain. “Ix-thot it is best everyone stays back … when we use the key”

The female red dragon nodded and the three large red dragons with the wee dragons in tow flew off to a safe distance. At the same time, Isca helping Megan walked up the slope and rejoined Nas and Venar-surr.

Nas looked at Isca and growled “Praising a human is not something I’m capable of …”

Venar-surr nudged Nas with her shoulder and said “Pride before the fall …”

Nas growled back at Venar-surr “The fall … is a nice time of year” But then Nas took a deep breath “Nicely fought battle, Isca”

Isca bowed before Nas “Thank You …same to you” As the mage straighten back up. Nefer’s head popped up out of the backpack “Meow!” Nefer said.

Venar-surr laughed “Oh … and you too Nefer!”

Nefer looked all smug at the compliment from the emerald copper dragon.

Venar-surr turned to Nas “I don’t think … your true name is Koocus Farpus (“dirty face” in dragon tongue) Venar-surr said as she snaked her beautiful serpentine neck around Nas’ neck … pondered what his name should be “Maybe it should be … Kackus Lupus “Always Grumpy” ...That was some battle you fought ... defeating a red twice your size ... it was kind of sexy"

When dragons intertwined their necks like this … it was a very intimate act.

Nas looked into Venar-surr eyes “Have you changed your mind about me …” He asked.

Venar-surr got a sad look inher eyes ... and unwound her neck “No … sorry ... i was not thinking” She said.

Megan and Isca had some idea what was happening. Megan decide to change the subject and spoke up “Dragons … the key … opening the door … freeing father dragon … remember!”

Venar-surr looked down at Megan. “Yes … please hand me the key”

Isca pulled it out of her pocket and the emerald copper dragon grabbed it.

“Best to stand back” She warned Megan and Isca.

“Wait … Venar-surr … when the key starts to feed the energy of the barrier back on itself. And the barrier becomes unstable … the resulting explosion of magic energy might kill Father Dragon … or bury him under this entire mountain … is there any way to shield him from this?” Nas asked.

Before Venar-surr could answer, Megan spoke up “I ask Father Dragon that question … he said don’t worry”

Nas … and Venar-surr looked at each other. “He must know what will happen … and is not worried”

The two mages got behind at large rock structure as Venar-surr gently pressed the key into the door’s keyhole. Once it was all the way in. She waited. But nothing seemed to be happening. “It does not seem to be working” She said.

“The feedback is accelerated by energy from the barrier … give the door a good shove … that should help” Megan yelled.

Nas and Venar-surr … backed up and both SLAMMED into the door … trying to break it down. That did it. There was a groaning and sparking … as a blue magical barrier appeared … flexing back and forth … each time it flexed … the amplitude grew bigger and bigger. Nas and Venar-surr moved back … watching the barrier flex more and more … the rock structures around the doors started to buckle … understand the danger to Isca and Megan … the dragons grabbed them and flew backwards away from the giant doors. The sounds of breaking rock filled the air … as the stone doors gave way … breaking into massive pieces and tumbling to the ground … there was an earthquake rolling over the landscape … as volcanic lava burst from the ground. Stream vents opened and sprayed gases into the air. “WHAT HAVE WE DONE! THIS MIGHT DESTORY THE WHOLE PLANET!!” Megan scream to Isca

The real prison that held Gragathor … the blue barrier was flexing out of control … wildly going back and forth … it suddenly exploded and collapse back into the mountain. The earthquake stopped. The place was silent … with the exception of the stream vents.

Then a massive ROAR sounded deep in the mountain as something started to move. Moments later, Gragathor, the Father Dragon came out of the hole where the doors had been.

The massive dark green dragon towered in front of Nas, Venar-surr, Isca, Nefer and Megan. His body was covered in scales so thick they could not be penetrated by conventional weapons. He looked every bit like a massive version of a dragon … with four powerful limbs and had two large wings on his back. But what separated him were the dossal plates running along his spine. They were large and at present they glowed. The five observers could feel constant waves of heat from these fins. There was no doubt this monstrously was Gragathor, the Father of Dragonkind. He was ancient and wise …. But he was also bitter from his entrapment and extremely dangerous!

Is father dragon better than match.com?

Dragon fear was something non-dragons could overcome with time … The scales, the brute strength, and the force of personality that echoed off Gragathor was his race’s ultimate expression of dragon fear. Isca and Megan were frozen in place by the draconic god. The overpowering sense of fear that he instilled in them had removed their will power. This sense of raw, savage power had sets their hairs on edge and forces them to the brink of sheer panic. Their muscles would not move and they could not speak.

Gragathor looked to Nas and Venar-surr. He nodded at both of them.

“Both of you have done well.” He said then he looked towards the smaller humans.

“The concept of working together with the lesser races is well-conceived.” Then he looked toward the red dragons and spoke to them “Venar-surr and Nasanthil have shown you what can be accomplished. It is time for dragons to better understand their place in the world.” He stated.

Venar-surr nodded and said “Father Dragon, I know you have been in prisoned a long time” she said worried that he was weak from his imprisonment “… but you are need. There will be a battle at the human city of Palamar …” Venar-surr said

Gragathor put up his right fore leg “I know … I have been inside the Illumian’s mind, I know everything she knows … and do not worry about my strength I absorbed all the magic from the barrier that held me”

Nas and Venar-surr were amazed, their dragon eyes widened … there had been so much energy … that it was difficult to comprehend that even Gragathor could contain it all.

“I’m very old … there are some magics even the elves have forgotten” Gragathor chuckled to himself.

“Now … time is short … so I must be blunt with both of you.” Gragathor said.

“Nasanthil … I’m the one that commanded that your egg not be destroyed. Your dragon name is Nasanthil … Ill-conceived … As appropriate as that name was for your early life … it can now be pronounced more correctly … as Nas’anthil” Gragathor stated loudly and boldly.

Nas and Venar-surr looked at each other in awe and wonder … “Nas’anthil” meaning “I’ll conceive” … just by placing the small accent on the “Nas” part of his name the whole meaning of his name changed.

Gragathor smiled “Yes … Nas’anthil … you conceived of working with the humans of Bulkenhold … conceived of working with the elves … finding the key … working with Venar-surr … and finally of the battle strategy to defeat a dragon twice your size. Wear your name with pride.” Gragathor ordered.

Then he turned to Venar-surr “There is another human saying you need to research … “The son does not share the guilt of the father” … Nas’anthil has lived a good life … has never force himself on any female … he is an honorable dragon. The thought that because his father had done a terrible thing, his son will do one as well is total non-sense. This kind of thinking means dragons are not in control of their own bodies, their own actions … it negates the possibility of correcting bad decisions or acts.” Gragathor stated.

“Venar-surr … Nas’anthil has one more meaning … he will be conceiving … you need to decide if you want to help him with that meaning. I sense he and you will produce many healthy, strong, and clever offspring … should you decide to go in that direction!”

Gragathor blinked his eyes … and freed Isca and Megan of their dragon freeze of him.

“I wish to thank both of you for my freedom. I’m ready to depart for Palamar.” Father Dragon announced. Megan and Isca looked to each other “Ok … let’s go … but can you tell those two … no more aerial maneuvers while we are riding!” Megan joked

Draxx had taken the others out to train as soon as it had gotten dark the next night. They had spent the Morning sleeping and after rising had eaten a large lunch and then spent the afternoon going over the battle plan trying to see if they could improve it.
Draxx was impressed with all the members on his team. The ranger Wind helped them when it came to suggesting places to hole up after torching the field and how to conceal themselves in forest environs.
Prrip was also good in this area and she was learning to adjust her way of communicating so that they were all beginning to understand her.
Tina was very good at the planning pointing out flaws in Draxx's plan that may have worked for the big Lizardman but were not feasible for the rest of them. She offered good advice and when he argued was not afraid to argue right back. Truth be told he was a little bit more than impressed by her. It had been a long time since a female had stood up to him and it had left him with a warm glow inside.
Now though they were outside and had made two practice runs from their 'spider holes'. Prrip had indeed proved the fastest. The combination of her lithe athletic body and her natural night vision helped her to cover the ground like a shadow.
The rest of them were not far behind though. Both Tina and Wind were used to working at night and were superbly fit, while Draxx had his own night vision and his strong muscles enabled him to cover ground surprisingly quickly.

They had a discussion and had headed back towards their holes when Draxx had noticed movement in the trees. He was only a few paces from his hole and as he lowered himself in he glanced left and right to see The shapes of the others doing the same. Giving a glance into the woods he was troubled to see more movement but settled in to await his turn to go.

Wind waited just beside his hole. It was his turn to go first and he was determined to get closer to Prrip's time. Oh he knew he should not be jealous of her but it was a matter of pride and he was going to equal her this time. He heard noises in the forest but payed them no heed after all it was probably one of the cities garrisons coming in late. He waited the required two minutes after arriving before calming himself and then he began to sprint towards the other gate. His eyesight narrowed to his next few footsteps as he concentrated on his counting as well. Suddenly an arrow appeared in front of him then another. Wind quickly rolled to a stop and peered around. From the forest Hundreds of Garliks were streaming towards the castles walls and unfortunately he was between them and nowhere near his bolthole.
Wind knew he was doomed. There was no chance of escape and he had been spotted. He could use his walnuts but that would ruin the whole plan and would only kill a few Garliks. He did the only thing he could. He filled his lungs with air and screamed out "The Garliks are attacking" and then threw himself at the advancing horde determined to sell his life dearly.

Devon

A horn blared and Devon immediately grabbed his bow, he paused and turned to Isola,

"Look after yourself."

He pulled her close and gave her a long, deep kiss goodbye and then he was speeding away, shouting out names. When he reached the Western wall which he would be defending the gates were closing down and heavy timbers set into place. Garliks were streaming out, screaming battle cries,

"Blood and piss..."

A few heads turned his way, but he ignored them, he realized that he had taken up Isola's more favorite swear, he really had to talk to her about using that.

"ARCHERS! FORM UP!"

The archers took their places on the battlement, arrows fitted to their bow strings. They stood in staggered formation, three rows deep, behind them stood swordsmen, the knights waited below on horses, along with them what spear and pike men Devon could get hold of. The archers' goal was easy, the front row fired, then stepped back, the second row fired and stepped back, the third row fired and stepped back, the first row fired and so on. The swordsmen would repel any breaching of the wall, the knights and polearm soldiers was Devon's defense against a breach of the gate.

He took a deep breath, although a surprise charge would have been interesting round about now...why not?

"KNIGHTS! MOUNT UP! OPEN THE GATES!"

The surprise on his sub-commanders' faces was evident, but the reaction was quick and sure. Earl Lexiton rounded on him,

"What do you think you're doing?"

Devon held up a calming hand,

"A sortie, just a quick sweep with mounted cavalry and then withdrawal."

"They are not light cavalry!"

"And you would send out light cavalry against those things streaming towards us right now? That will be a slaughter, this is a surprise."

The earl huffed and shouted orders down at the knights, with a roar and thunder of hooves the knights charged out of the gate. On the other side of the wall it looked like they shot from a catapult, hooves tearing up the grass, lances and armor glinting in the torch light. They formed a wide V and charged right into the surprised attackers, a wide sweep fanned out as momentum took them close to the forest and then back again towards the gate. In their wake lay hordes of Garliks, stabbed, slashed and trampled into the ground. Devon smiled at the success of his gamble, they lost nobody, but he knew that before this was over, that would change. The knights clattered back in and the gate closed behind them and the heavy beams secured them once more.

Garliks surged forward to take the bridge over the trench, Devon motioned and a archer fired an arrow, it struck a rope, the rope snapped, releasing pulleys and the bridge fell away, halting the few Garliks. Devon watched them as they tried to draw into formation,

"FIRE!"

Arrows rained down onto the disorganized Garliks, the second line stepped up,

"NOTCH!"

"FIRE!"

As the second hail of death rained down the Garliks retreated back towards their lines

OOC (please read time post before the last one)

The war council had concluded when King Ronar Stoneshield stood up and ended the debate.

“Enough talking … Devon Hillsong shall command the western sector. Earl Lexiton shall be his second in commander.” He ordered. Then he looked directly towards the Earl “I’m counting on you to support your new commander”

“Yes Sire” The earl answered.

“Now prepare for the defense of this city and your sector” The king ordered.

The meeting broke up and Earl Lexiton and Lord Hillsong walked over to Devon “Devon, no hard feeling, I argued the command position because I felt I was the best man for the job. I and all the knights stand ready to support your orders.” Earl Lexiton said.

Devon nodded to him and the Earl departed.

Devon turned to face his father, Lord Hillsong.

His father’s face was stern and unforgiving … Devon was preparing for another lecture on knighthood and his responability to the family name. But instead Lord Hillsong face filled with a rare smile.

“I’m very proud of you son …” He said as he grabbed Devon’s shoulders and hugged him. It was a magical moment for both of them. Unspoken, but understood, Father and Son had made up … over the harsh words of the past. As they separated Lord Devon’s face became serious again.

“You never did understand flanking maneuvers … and how to use armored knight to break the enemy's lines … don’t forget those tactics. You’re over reliance on direct and indirect fire is a weakness in your battle tactics. As I demonstrated repeatedly when you were younger.” The father stated.

“Father” Devon said about to argue with him but then he changed his mind and said “You are right, I’ll keep that in mind. My advice to you … Keep your head down, I want to discuss who defended better after the battle … your sector … or mine!”

One day later in the middle of the night

Zarik was awoken with a banging on his door.

“General … Garliks … in large numbers approaching the city” a messenger stated. Zarik got up.

“By the nine hells … They’re early!” He snorted. “Place the defenses on full alert! Everyone to their stations.” He ordered as he slipped into his golden armor and plucked his massive battle axe out of its holder.

Zarik reached the high battle tower finding King Ronar Stoneshield was already there looking out over the city walls into the fields and forest edges. The wall that ringed the city was lite with hundreds of torches and this was enough illumination to show the fields across to the large ring of the new trench. The trench had been rigged with additional torches and from this light … the fields and the armies of the garliks could be seen.

The enemy force was so vast ... it was hard to describe … it was a great sea of Garliks … all approaching the trench. The undead creatures approached from all sides as Zarik had expected. Such a huge army was gathering that even Zarik was overwhelmed. It is one thing to talk about 100,000 attacking Garlik … to write the number down … to plan against that many … but to actually see them almost made his heart stop. He could see them forming into divisions. He could hear their foot stomping … the grinding of their war engines against the stone roads … Zarik could also feel their hatred of the living … he could sense their desire to stop change … to remove all life from the planet …

King Ronar Stoneshield was shaken too “There are so many …” He muttered.

Zarik knew the defending units must be thinking this too. Fear and dismay. It was an emotion the king and himself must contain … They needed to get the defending units back in balance.

“Sire … I hope you practiced that speech … we are going to need it!” Zarik said.

Wizard Ardel and Ikarus had joined the two in the battle tower.

“Look Zarik … the Garliks have taken the watch tower you abandoned. I can see the overseer generals all gathered on the highest level peering over at us.” The king stated and then winked at Zarik

A small almost unseen smile appeared on the bull’s face “Well … I predict a threating speech is next … buy our fire starter as much time as you can” Zarik replied to the king.

The head Overseer Demon voice echoed across the battlefield.

“People of the City of Palamar … Good Evening … The Demonlords demand that you open your gates and allow us to enter. No one will be harmed if this simple request is granted.” The Overseer General Demon stated as his voice magically broadcasted across the city.

King Ronar Stoneshield looked at Ikarus and the old wizard nodded his head.

As the king spoke, his voice was also huge and deep and broadcasted to everyone in the city and on the battlefield. “No … demon … we shall not open our gates so you can slaughter us … we are fully aware of your trickery and what you have done to the town you have captured so far.”

“Ahh King Ronar Stoneshield … your response was expected … It will be my personal pleasure to feast on your flesh and suck the marrow from your bones. I swear this to the demonlords themselves!

You cannot hope to defeat this army … we out number you 20 to 1 … and” The demon paused for a few seconds as the 5 Mesoblubrons floated up to the watch tower’s level. Then the demon continued “And we have 5 Mesoblubrons fighting with us. Finally … if you think you will be saved by the rear guard action of your river defending army.” The demon stated and pulled up the head of Duke Cornwall. “That army is no longer with you!’

There were gasps of shock and dismay from all over the city.

“You see … there is no hope. We are going to remove the major problem on this planet … life … we are going to stop it from always changing, evolving, adapting. To stop change … we need to remove life. Now if you give up … I promise you we shall eradicate your existence quickly. WHAT IS YOUR ANSWER?” The demon creature asked and grinned evilly.

King Ronar Stoneshield stood taller and prouder. Wizard Ardel even threw a light on him making his armor glow with truth and honor. His voice rung out to the open ears of the two armies.

"People and Races here to defend Palamar … You may have wonder why you are here … Why are you defending this city. The demon general just provided all the justification to answer that question. You are not here to defend a city … you are here to defend an entire planet … and all life on it. Today ... your honor and bravery will be tested. Humans … Minotaurs … Elves … Other races too numerous to mention … you are all here … fighting as one force to battle the dark forces before you …. The odds are tough … but trust your commanders, they have a good plan to defend the city … raise your weapons … raise them in honor… raise to them to your follow defender … Let them know you have their back … and that you will stand your ground …” The defense forces were captivated by the king’s words. He took another breath and stood taller.

"Tonight ... fight for all the life on this planet … Fight for the goodness in this world … Fight for your lives of your friends and children. Tonight, we battle darkness and just like a sun rise … in the morning the darkness will be driven back.” There was cheering as the defenders had regained their spirit.

The King paused, and looked down at the unit behind the walls … his intensity clear … Then he pulled out his sword … raised it high.

“Soldiers of Palamar, are you ready?

“Yes” was the cheer back

“Soldiers of Palamar, why do you fight?” the king asked

"For life!" the army of defenders cried back in unison.

“Demon … my answer back to you … is GO TO HELL AND DON”T COME BACK!!” The king yelled.

This was the trigger signal for the walnuts arranged neatly all around the abandoned tower. Zarik had requested additional walnut for the top level where most likely the opposing general would make his command post. It was the highest and best location. The resulting explosion … destroyed the entire tower … vaporizing all the demon overseer generals and all the mesoblubrons in one big explosion. The stones of the tower were flung across the battlefield.

“Pity … it was a very nice watch tower” King Ronar Stoneshield said to General Zarik a big grin on his face.

General Zarik grinned back “Well constructed too … nice that we got all the overseer generals at the same time … was not counting on that!”

The 5 Mesoblubrons reformed … but the overseer demons could not do that trick. One of the floating eyeballs screamed “ATTACK!!” The sound of running Garliks, catapults wheels moving, Garlik Ogres stomping, and makeshift bridges filled the night air … as the army headed for the first layer of defense the trench.

Devon gets a hug

Earl Lexiton watched as the knights plowed into the Garliks … wheeled about and came back over the bridge across the trench and across the fields and safely through the gate. He was ecstatic … He spit out his smoking pipe and ran (and this was a funny sight … as the Earl was a somewhat portly man …) he crashed into Devon hugging him in a great big bear hug.

“JOLLY GOOD IDEA … HOW DID I EVER DOUBT YOU! DID YOU SEE THAT! CAUGHT THOSE … THINGS …TOTALLY BY SURPRISE!!” He yelled at Devon … The barrel-chested man was huffing and puffing as Devon freed himself the Earl hug.

The Attack had done two things for the western defensive sector … placed the Garlik forces in disarray … and in a more weary defensive posture even though they still greatly outnumbered the defenders. And secondly … all the knights now LOVED and respected Devon as the sector commander. In this one move he had cemented his command of the entire sector. Lastly, the surprise attack maneuver would later be named “The Devon Maneuver” by humans … and the watching Minotaurs would call it “The gutsy guy maneuver” The maneuver was required learning for aspiring military leaders.
