Heroes come in all shapes and sizes (IC)

After Devon’s brilliant Cavalry maneuver, the Garlik Army pressed forward on all sides even the western sector but they were more cautious on that front. They moved towards the large encirclement trench, just barely out of range of the archers on the wall … The Garliks were the bulk of the force, but mixed in were Garlik Ogres, bridging equipment and wheeled catapults. From the battle tower, Zarik could see the Army approaching from all sides.

He turned to the human King “I don’t like the look of those catapults. Better perhaps our siege engine to engage in counter fire.” He suggested

King Ronar Stoneshield nodded “I agree … Now would be a good time for the fire starters to begin” the king stated.

“I agree … but I see no sign of them … and I underestimated the size of this attacking force. The spider holes are too close to the enemies rear lines. Our fire starters are going to have some trouble.” Zarik concluded.

“What was the back up strategy?” The King asked

“Dragons … but the Garliks either attacked too soon … or the dragons are not coming.” Zarik noted “We might need use flaming arrows but a large part of the force will escape into the forest if we go that route.” Zarik suggested.

The King grunted and asked “Who are the fire starters?”

Zarik answered “The best we had … Draxx, a Kroxigars lizardman … Prrip, a leopard person … Tina, a human thief ... and Wind, a human ranger.”

The King nodded “Let’s given them some more time. But everything depends on this working!”

Zarik asked one more question “Sire … look more closely at the Garlik Ogres … they seem different somehow”

The King did as requested, then shook his head. “Still too far away … we’ll need to wait until they are closer. But I agree with you … there is something odd about them”

Draxx heard Winds cry as he heard the rushing of heavy footsteps over his hole. He held his breath but even though the earth shook and the roof bowed in a little at times, the little bolt hole remained intact. Draxx would have to compliment the builders if he ever made it out of this alive.
Slowly the din above his hole died down although he could still hear Garliks moving around. He must still be in their rear ranks. Not an ideal place to be but someplace he could work with.
During their mad dash he was sure he had heard the rumble of siege engines and if he delayed much longer they might be put into use. He doubted that any signal would be coming from the city tonight so it was up to him to begin the attack. Hopefully the others would hear the flames and start their own attacks soon after.
Springing from his hiding place Draxx drew his huge Warhammer and bellowed his challenge. This was also part of his plan. If he could draw attention to himself maybe it would give the defenders a chance to organise themselves as well as the other two a better chance at sneaking off. Throwing two walnuts away to his left and right inwards towards the ditch on a twenty second delay Draxx began to run his route easily swinging his huge weapon back and forth, smashing limbs and caving in heads left and right of him. Every so often he would throw a walnut behind him, always towards the ditch. Behind him he left a trail of destruction as the Garliks still had not worked out what had happened and were milling around in confusion. Ahead of him a few of them had begun to draw together but Draxx just barreled into them, taking one hand off his hammer to slash out a throat while the hammer crushed the skull of another. as two more went flying his tail swept around into the face of a third who was about to skewer him with a sword thinking he had an easy opening, laying waste to it. He had hardly broken stride and carried on.
He was only halfway along his route when the first walnuts went off. The explosions took out several Garliks that had been standing next to them and more were caught in the inferno that quickly started in the oil soaked undergrowth. Seconds later more went off until behind Draxx was a wall of flames that was quickly spreading towards him. Grinning Draxx charged ahead throwing yet another walnut. This was turning into a fun night indeed.

Prrip

Prrip heard the roar of the massive lizardman … and burst out of her spider hole with the speed of a meteorite. Like a leopard she pronouced onto the nearest Garlik and rips it with her claws. Draxx had drawn off many of the Garliks with his appearance, but there were plenty left. Prrip’s “hurt” from the evil slaver and the years in the fighting pits were gone … but not the skills she had acquired. After there were four dead Garliks in under 20 seconds … the Garliks ran from her … clearing a nice path for her to drop her walnuts.

What had happened to Prrip for those many weeks that the main group recovered the key of Heereel KuRuck and the Wizard Ardel? She had done as the Water Nymph had told her. She worked to reduce suffering … as much suffering as possible … she helped all those around her. Each act strengthened her … her spirit returned to her and she grew stronger and stronger. Her confidence returned to her. She approached King Enos and reminded him of Maut’s final words

“Act like an elf, King Enos, prepare yourself for war.”

The King argued about the risk … he did not want to lose more people … or his daughter. Prrip asked him which coarse of act reduced the most suffering … staying behind the magical barrier … or protecting the city of Palamar? The King finally heard Maut’s words. He sent forth his army to Palamar.

Prrip killed more Garliks in front of her... their black blood spilled on the ground. She knew this kind of killing was not evil. Garliks were not truly alive. They had no feelings … no spirit. They were a pile of hateful emotions magically bundled into a soulless creature. They looked similar to imps, humanoid looking, stands about 4 ft. tall, barbed tail, small horns. Killing a Garliks was like destroying bad feelings. She ripped into them like a leopard killing sheep. She would not be stopped. There was no force known that could stop her … her sector would burn … and she would be purified futher by it.

The walnuts started to explode behind her … with tremendous force. The night was lite up by their detonation … the ground shook, and bodies were thrown everywhere. Parts ripped off of them … she saw arms and legs flying through the air.

"GRRRRRR!!" She yelled out, leapt and pounced as she completed her sector before the others. A great wall of flame headed toward the trench and the now trapped Garlik Army.

Tina

In her wake … there was a bloodbath that would have turned the most bloodthirsty ill. That was a bit of an over the top statement … as she was not ill at all! Tina was doing what she loved most … creating turmoil and chaos … fighting with total disregard to rules and fairness. She had used her cloak of camouflage to maximum effect.

The horde of Garliks … charged about as if mindless … they could not seem to find the thief. But she found them … slicing throats … placing walnuts here and there … throwing one of her numerous daggers to deadly effect.

Now … it was time to change tactics … and so among the screams of agony in the night … one could hear an odd sound. It was like a shrieking whistle that was often followed by a scream of death from a Garlik. Suddenly a Garlik was thrown into the air … and landed on a raised spear of his fellow soldier. Then there was a head … black blood pouring out flying through the air.

Even though the bulk of the army continued toward the trench, a small part had broken off and formed a ring. In the middle of this ring a low figure crouched which was the source of all this mayhem. She glanced about … as she rose slowly and whipped the metal staff and smashed it into another approaching Garlik.

"C'mon SCUM," a rich sensual voice of Tina purred, "Don’t tell me that is all you have?"

It was a ridiculously dangerous situation … but the female thief seemed totally nonchalant about it. Her free hand moved up to brush her deep red hair out of her face as she observed the situation. The garliks around her gazed hungrily but could not decide what to do.

"And I was looking forward to having such a good time tonight," Tina sighed mockingly. "You Garliks are so disappointing..."

A Garlik behind her screamed and rushed forward its short sword raised. "You die now BITCH!”

"Ah! Finally someone with some balls!" Tina grinned as she spun about and threw a dagger right at his crotch. Tina did not know if Garlik’s had balls or not … but the Garlik instantly gave a high pitched squeal as the dagger sliced through his crotch … then a second dagger stuck him directly in the head. He fell over and did not move.

"Well... At least had some balls," she giggled.

All the Garliks raised their weapons and charge … determined to cut her into bloody bits.

"Now that's more like it," she purred softly. She threw a walnut on the ground and pole vaulted over the rushing Garliks … there was only a second delay … then a nice big explosion. In fact, all the walnuts she had been spreading exploded … her section of the fire wall completely in flames.

“Bye Bye Garliks! Until next time!” Tina said and she placed a ring on her finger and completely disappeared.

As the first fires started Devon realized that something was wrong, there was no sign of Wind. He looked about and saw that the flames was spreading, this left a gap in the defense, one through which the Garliks could escape. Among the arrows which rested in bags secured to the wall there was fire arrows, he plucked up one, slid his bow from his shoulder, used a torch to light it, drew back and fired. The arrow streaked out into the night, but landed two feet short of the edge of the soaked undergrowth.

Devon found another arrow and lit it, this time he knew how far to shoot and he adjusted his aim accordingly. Then he was thrown back from the edge of the battlement to crash hard into the furthest rail, almost going over. A Garlik have come close enough to use a siege crossbow and the heavy bolt was now protruding from Devon's chest. The archers fired at the Garliks which seemed closest and five actually went down. They had used the backdrop of the others to sneak closer.

"Get the commander back! Get a healer!"

Hand grasped Devon and dragged him back towards the command post, as they settled him down a hand grasped the bolt, Devon stopped the soldier,

"You do that and I bleed to death in moments."

The soldier turned away,

"Lord Devon's been hit!! We need a healer!!"

Devon grimaced and lay back, looking up at the Earl Lexiton,

"Well it seems you will be getting your command after all."

Draxx heard the explosions of the other walnuts going off and grinned evilly. Obviously the others were up and about and doing their job's. He had been having fun destroying these little foes but now they were beginning to organise themselves and it was getting harder for him to break through the numbers sent against him. He sent another walnut with a two second delay into a packed group rushing to attack him and ran by as body parts rained down on him from the ensuing explosion.
Ahead of him was his Target. Two huge siege engines stood facing the Eastern gates and he knew that if they survived those gates could be breached. Between him and them was a mass of Garliks and several of the Garlik ogres. Draxx had time to check his supply of walnuts. He only had about ten left which wasn't that many. He estimated he would need at least three each for the catapults and at least one to escape. That only left him with three to attack with. Oh well he thought, just more to kill with his hammer.
Charging forward he threw one of his remaining nuts deep into the pack between him and the engines. Immediately it exploded sending bodies flying and starting fires. Garlik's nearby caught fire and began to retreat but were hemmed in by their comrades on both sides and they began to burn as well. Those that were able to run only spread the fire. Soon Draxx had a small path to the engines but he would have to risk the flames. His skin would protect him a little but he would have to be quick. Rushing through he immediately threw his nuts into the engines and ran on past. He was smoking and was now moving slowly, it was time to get out. Moving as fast as he could he began to head for the forest but suddenly two large figures emerged from the smoke. The ogres grinned at him and attacked. Draxx parried their strokes but was pushed back and forth, never able to attack himself. He could feel his strength leaving him and if this kept up much more he was not sure he would survive. Draxx gathered himself for one last effort and prepared to launch an all out attack.

Isola

Isola had watched as the fires started. There was excitement in the battle tower, the King and Zarik breathed a sigh of relief. Then they got worried again. One of the sectors showed no flames or explosions. It was the sector with the ranger named wind. There was no fire in his sector.

Isola glanced down and saw the tiny figure of Devon at his command post. He moved to the very edge of the battlement getting ready to fire a flaming arrow at the oil soaked fields.

“OH NO!” Isola cried realizing the danger Devon had placed himself in.

The first arrow fell short … but before the second was fired … the battlement was struck with a massive crossbow bolt … Devon was thrown back … pieced by the weapon.

“NOOOOOOO” Isola screamed. She knew it was bad … really bad. She grabbed at her green gem … it had the power to heal, but she was too far away. She needed to get to him right away. But how.

Then she remembered the boots she wore. The Boots of Striding and Springing she had put them on in Wizard Ardel's tower. And before anyone could stop her, she took a few steps backwards and then ran full speed directly toward the edge of the battle tower and jumped off.

It was a fantastic leap … she sailed through the air. It was the kind of leap you could make in your dreams (or in a Matrix movie!) not in real life. Her speed and distance was prefect as she landed next to a surprised Earl and the assisting soldier.

“Are you an angel?” The Soldier asked in awe … as he looked at the beautiful busty concubine.

“PULL THE DAMN THING OUT!!” Isola ordered the Earl and the soldier.

“But …” The Earl tried to protest. At the same the soldier said “You don’t sound like an angel!”

“NOW!” Isola ordered … her eyes told the whole story … there was to be no questioning her order. The earl and soldier grabbed the massive bolt and yanked it out.

Isola grabbed her gem and spoke the magic words. The gem glowed green and the hole in Devon chest healed. He would not bleed to death. His shoulder however would hurt like hell for a while. Devon face looked white and his eyes were closed.

Isola grabbed Devon’s handsome face … her warm hands touched the sides of his cold face. Her long silky burgundy colored hair hung like a curtain as she bent over and kissed him ... kissed him with all the passion inside her.

"Isola?" Devon asked as he kissed her back his eyes still closed “I hope that is you … because if it is Earl Lexiton … he is a tremendously good kisser … and that thought is really disturbing to me!”

“OHH YOU … it’s me…now stop lying around … and going kill more of those Garliks!” Isola said as she got back up. Devon opened his eyes, his face was smiling. He reached up with his good hand and Isola pulled him to his feet.

“I'm staying around … just in case … you do something dumb again!” Isola said firmly.

“You are to protect the mages” Devon said.

“They don’t fuck as good as you … I’m staying here!” Isola said.

The soldier leaned over to Earl Lexiton and said “NO WAY is she an angel!”

Tina

Tina could just barely see Draxx, as he parried the Garlik Ogres blows. He was being pushed back toward the fire.

“The big lizard needs my help” Tina thought to herself as she slip around the Ogres and was now behind them … As she reemerged from the smoke she was shocked by what she saw..

"By the fires of the nine hell! They're armored!" Tina swore. No wonder the big lizardman was having trouble with them. Armored Ogres … if they got to the walls … the archers would have no effect on them. The 10 foot high things were covered head to toe with steel plate.

“No problem” the thief thought as she ran up behind the first one … and leapt on its back. She popped open a flask and poured it inside the helm of the undead creature. The thing started to shriek like crazy as there was an awful sizzling sound. Tina leapt off as the second one came after her …

“Over here … dumb shit … over here!” She called to it. The Ogres approach rapidly. But now its back was to Draxx.

“Acid … works great on armored ogres …" Tina called to it … she moved left and then to right … “by the way … nice trick with the slits in the helm ... too small for daggers or arrows. Who thought of that? … the demonlords themselves?” Tina asked.

Tina suddenly stood perfectly still. “No more games … I’m right here … kill me!”

The Ogres roared and got ready for the killer blow. When there was a mighty crushing sound ... as a hammer smashed into the ogre's head. Draxx hammer came down so hard … the helm was crushed totally in … and the Ogre was dead. The lizardman fell over exhausted from the massive stroke.

Tina head over to him … and helped him back on his feet.

“WHAT WAS THAT!!?” Draxx asked in exasperation. "You almost got killed … why did you stop moving?”

"So you’d have a still ogre to kill!! … I guess I need to make this perfectly clear … I don't need any special protection!" Tina stated.

Draxx looked with new found respect at the small warrior. She had taken on those beast's to save him trusting that he would have her back. Putting as little weight on her he staggered to his feet.

"WHAT WAS THAT" he asked her in exasperation, "You almost got killed...Why did you stop moving?"

"So you’d have a still ogre to kill!! … I guess I need to make this perfectly clear … I don't need any special protection!" Tina stated.

Draxx grinned at the steel in her voice but suddenly his eyes widened. Unseen by both of them, a third ogre had had managed to circle in behind Tina and now launched itself at her swinging it's axe straight at her head.
Draxx yelled a warning and pulled Tina into his embrace, thrusting his left arm up to shield them from the blow. The axe bit deep into the muscle of his bicep and then his bone, lodging there. He couldn't keep himself from bellowing in pain, but as he raised his head, Tina darted out and thrust her sword through the ogres armpit into it's heart.
Turning back she say the extent of his injury and winced. The axe was lodged in the upper arm of the big Lizardman and he was loosing blood rapidly.
Draxx looked at Tina's worried face and smiled. "Not to worry girl, It's only a scratch. Let's find a place to hide and then we can sort this out."
Fortunately for them the fighting seemed to have died off around them and the fires were closing in. They took their bearings and then quickly vanished into the smoke headed towards the forest.

Devon

He leaned closer and whispered,

"What bothers me is that you how the mages fuck."

He looked at the soldier and earl,

"She is an angel, she is my angel and if she'll have me..."

He placed his arm around her waist and looked at her,

"I intend to make her my betrothed."

He smiled at her shocked face, then turned back to his command,

"Ogres!"

Rocks came flying out of the gloom and arcehers responded, but the arrows fell harmlessly away. Devon realized that meant armor,

"Shit."

He had two options and he chose the one his father loathed,

"Bodkin arrows! Use Bodkin arrows!"

"We only have thirty Bodkins."

Devon felt his hopes flag, he could not shoot with his arm in the condition it was. He also doubted that Isola would allow him near the rampart after having used up her healing for the day...then he almost slapped himself. The Rangers in reserve!

"Tree!"

He could feel the puzzled eyes on him, but a wiry young man materialized from the shadows,

"I need the best."

"You are the best."

Devon groaned,

"Stop smart mouthing me, Go find me the best six Rangers you can get your hands on."

Devon turned to Isola,

"You can travel faster than anybody now. Go warn Zarik and the king that the Ogres are encased in armor. It makes them tougher, but ponderous."

He saw the look in her eyes and took her hand in his good one,

"Please? I will stay safe, I give you my word of honor on that."

Tina and Draxx

Tina was in a bit of shock … no one had ever taken a blow for her before. Particularly, as she was bragging about how she did not need any special protection. The big dumb lizard may die, or at least not be able to use his arm anymore … Just because she was too busy being arrogant.

They had made it to the forest, but they could not go too deep into it as Draxx’s strength was going. The big lizardman was leaning on Tina as she found a hiding spot near the small river on the forest’s edge. Some large rocks provided a good spot to take care of his injury without being seen.

“You big dummy … why did you do that?” Tina asked

“The axe blow would have sliced your head into two pieces” Draxx pointed out “Better my arm”

“UGH!!” Tina grunted in frustration. She never would understand these hero types … He should have let her die … it was clearly better for HIM if her head was in two pieces and his arm was undamaged!

“Here bite down on this” She handed him a branch as think as her leg “DON’T scream out … whatever you do …I’m going to pull this axe out of your arm.”

Draxx nodded and placed the branch into his great crocodilian mouth. Tina grabbed the axe with both hands … and yanked as hard as she could. The axe came out … followed by the sound of something massive breaking.

She looked back at Draxx … the branch in his mouth had snapped in two. “FUCK!” she gasped not understanding the power of a lizardman’s jaws. He pulled the two branch parts out with his good hand “Use a bigger branch next time” He suggested. She handed him a small bottle with blue liquid in it. “Drink this” She directed.

Draxx gulped it down. The cut in his arm sealed … so he would not bleed to death. But the damage was extensive. A real healer was needed. “I’ll wrap it up … that is all I can do for now” She said. She wrapped it up in some white cloth … immobilizing it to his side. Draxx would not be using his right arm for the rest of the battle. In fact, it might need to come off completely if there was too little blood flow in his arm.

When she was done, they both leaned back against one of the huge rocks that shielded them from probing eyes. Tina needed Draxx to stay awake … to make sure the axe blade did not have poison on it. So she talked to him.

“Assuming we survive this … stupidity … what are your plans?” She asked.

"Long term? Not sure. Short term, I plan to grab the biggest mug of beer I can find and get plastered… then I think some of the girls at the Throbin Hood … wanted to thank me.” he said.

Tina’s eye brows went up and she said “Really … but you’re a …” then she paused knowing what she was about to say would sound pretty stupid. “Well … what I mean to say is … a lizardman … of your size … might not be compatible with a human female”

Draxx just nodded “Mmmm … you might be correct … but the girls at the Throbin Hood seemed pretty excited about the whole idea” He said. There was silence between the two of them as they each thought about what he had just said.

Draxx decided to change the subject, asking Tina ““How about you?" He grinned.

"If we survive, I think I might join you in getting drunk!” She answered back at him. They both looked at each other and shared a smile. They had saved each other's lives and there was a bond that formed because of those actions. Then Tina continued “And I think I might join you and the girls … if you don’t mind … sounds like fun!”

Isola

Isola had jumped from roof top to roof top and then leapt into a lower level window of the battle tower. She sped up the stair case to reach the top of the tower and warn Zarik and the King. But half of her mind was on what Devon had said. "I intend to make her my betrothed."

She could have jumped up and down with excitement and sheer joy, but right then she just couldn't believe it might actually happen. Isola had always been the concubine … not the wife. Now it was her turn to be the wife. It was like a fairy tale dream come real.

As she came out onto the tower top, two things stuck her. She stopped dead in her tracks and said out loud “Hey … I forgot to say yes … and he never gave me a ring!”

Everyone on the tower looked at her.

Ardel asked "What did you say?”

Isola smiled and said “Nothing … King Stoneshield and General Zarik … Devon has recovered and wishes to warn you the Garlik Ogres are fully armored.”

“Thank You, Isola that is very useful information” The General acknowledged. He turned to the King “with the success of the fire trap … we can redirect the siege engines in those sectors at the Ogres … that should help. Also each sector has elements from the 1st brigade of the horned legion … It might take two minotaurs … but they can bring down an armored ogre.” Zarik stated.

The king nodded “Pity the fire trap did not work in all the sectors.” He said and turned to his military aid “Please direct all siege engines to engage the Ogre formations.”

Note:
The first ring of the fire trap had worked well … Garliks in those sectors that had caught fire had lost 65% of their forces and almost 100% of their bridging equipment and siege engines. The unburnt sector had suffered almost no losses. The forces in that sector had stopped to remove the sticky straw and oil from their wheels and feet. Some bridging equipment was being sent over to other sectors so that they could again attack the city from all sides.

Draxx could feel that his left arm was going to be of no use to him in the coming battles.Tina's potion had helped with his blood loss but it had not been powerful enough to do anything about the actual injury. He could feel the bone moving around inside and knew it was only going to get worse and not better.
He sighed. It looked like there was only one choice left to him and Tina was not going to like it.

"I need to ask you a favor Tina. My arm will only get worse and soon it will be worse than useless it will be a hindrance. I need you to chop it off."

Tina looked at him with shock written all over her face. "Are you crazy. If your arm needs to come off all well and good, but we will do it when we get back inside the castle where there are healers to do it."

Draxx smiled at the passion and concern in her voice but just shook his head at her. "We won't make it inside if I am left like this. I can feel my bone is ready to break apart and if it does that it will require a major healing spell. If you cut it off now however I can start my own healing process and it will be as good as new within a week or so."

Tina latched onto that last part. "What do you mean healed up?"

Draxx grinned at her. "I am part Lizard remember. One of the advantages of that is a small regenerative power that enables us to regrow severed limbs. As long as you do it cleanly I will be fine."

Tina still hesitated but she knew she would need the big mans help. "Very well, but on your head be it."

Draxx nodded and stepped over to the rocks, selecting a nice looking one and resting his arm on it. This time he grabbed a sturdy branch (it looked like a young tree to Tina) and put it in his mouth. Breathing deeply he nodded to Tina and waited.

Tina had picked up the ogres axe and hefted it in her hands. It was a little heavy for her but for what she was about to do that was a good thing. Raising it above her head she brought it down in a viscous blow neatly severing Draxx's arm just above his recent wound.

Draxx bit down into the branch in his mouth as he felt the searing pain in his arm. His teeth penetrated the wood but this time he did not bite through it. Reaching into his own sack he pulled out his own vial of healing and quickly drank it down. Immediately the bleeding stopped and a thin film of skin grew over the stump. His head cleared as the pain retreated to a dull thudding.

"Thank you Tina. I think it would be best if we rest here for a while and see if Prrip catches up with us. Hopefully the castle will start fighting back soon and we can slip back in during the chaos."

Disarray

There was disarray in the Garlik command structure. The success of the fire traps had made the Garlik Army more cautious. Several of the Mesoblubrons argued that now was the time for them (the mesoblubron's) to go forward and attack. Others argued to wait, get completely ready and send in the second wave of Garliks and Ogres. One lone Mesoblubron argued to send in everything they had …all at once. In the end, the “get set and send in the second wave” was the chosen tactic. There were several spells laid over the ground between the trench and the city walls to prevent another fire trap from occurring. The Garliks had seen the straw and oil that lay over the ground … and would not fall for the same trick twice. All of this took time … 2 hours had passed … giving the defenders time as well.

The Battle Tower

“Has there been no sign of our fire starters?” The King asked.

Zarik shook his big bull head “No sire … I believe we must consider them either dead or in a position to no longer assist us. Their bravery shall be recorded.”

“So what do you propose now?” The King asked.

“It appears the Garliks will cross the trench with their bridges again. I believe we should allow about half the force to get across … then blow up the bridges.” He said.

King nodded “And the fire trap?” he asked

“The Wizard Ikarus informs me … the Garliks have laid down fire suppression spells over that ground … the fire part of the trap is no longer useable. However …” Zarik had that little twinkle in his eyes “We have devised another problem for them to face.”

The King knew the minotaur well by now, his eyes brows went up “What do you have planned?”

“A little bit of rain and lightning!” Zarik grinned

Right away the King saw the advantage of this idea “The heavily armored Ogres … will attract the lightning!”

“Yes” Zarik grinned as he agreed with the King, then sheepishly he said “Normally, I prefer an intelligent advisory … however in this case as we are so greatly outnumbered … I’m happy to battle wits with the witless!”

“Let’s hope this all works” The king said.

Music for the coming Battle!

So after 2 hours of preparations … the attacking Army was ready again. Bridges were moved into position. The trench had four narrow spots designed for bridges … the original bridges had been destroyed to slow the Garlik Army advance as described earlier. However, the narrow crossing points remained. This was the natural place to put the temporary bridges the Garliks had constructed.

A giant drum began to beat. As the enormous enemy force began to move again … even after the trap success … there was still a great sea of Garliks … all crowding around the 4 bridge crossing points to come over the trench.

“FIRE THE CATAPUTS!” The King ordered … massive rocks and flaming tar balls headed towards the high density bridge crossing areas. As the deadly objects hits … there were screams of agony. The rocks were effective … however after the flaming tar balls hit … the fire seemed to go out almost at once.

Zarik called over to the mages “Some storm clouds … please!”

And after a few minutes … there were areas in the night sky, where no stars were visible ... covered by clouds. The sky rumbled as thunder and lightning brewed.

This active did not slow the approach of the undead creatures. All four city main gates were being attacked. However, the sector Devon defended had more forces than the other because of the failed fire trap earlier in the evening.

In general the Army of Garliks seemed almost as big as when they first arrived …. Zarik thought they must have received reinforcements during the 2 hour lull. “King Stoneshield … keep an eye on Devon’s gate … he’ll have the toughest fight!” Zarik warned the King.

Lightning started to light up the night sky … striking down into the Garlik formations. When about half the enemy force had made it over the bridges … Zarik nodded to Ardel and with a small spoken word from the wizard … four massive explosions ripped through the night.

Isola would remember many things that happened during that night … some would haunt her … others would bring her joy. The sight of the four wooden bridges flying up into the air over 100 feet … slowly spinning and then crashing back down into the attacking Garliks … was one of her favorite joyful memories!

With their normal war engines and ladders all burnt up and a powerful anti-fire spell on the grounds in front of the city walls. The Garliks were using a battering ram to breech the gate. Ogres manned the massive ram … and slammed it into the gate. The sound of strain on the gate’s hinges, reinforcing beams and bar lock could be heard all the way up to the battle tower.

Devon's Sector

Earl Lexiton was on the ramparts with Devon. An arrow flew past his head with a whistle. “Archers? When had the Garliks brought archers in?” He thought, as he looked down at the attacking Army. The Garliks had archers … and LOTS of them … He scrambled to take cover.

“Commander Devon … Garliks Archers!” He yelled. First Armored Ogres … and now Garliks Archers … what other surprises did these undead have? He thought.

Devon was watching the ram strike the gate … and had seen the Garlik archers. He turned to talk to Earl Lexiton as an arrow stuck the wall behind him. He did not flinch.

“Earl Lexition … for some of us ... arrows are not to be feared” Devon said as he reaches up and snatched an arrow out of the air that had been headed for him. “It is simply a matter of correctly predicting their flight path!” he said with a little smile.

Tina and Draxx and Prrip

Tina took a swing and handed the flask back to Draxx. The Lizardman took a swig and smiled.

“This stuff is really helping with the pain” He stated “Now what are you trying to say about that card game?” He asked

“Draxx … you were cheated ... Kaas … or as he is better known … Crooked Kaas is a cheater. He usually uses a cheating technique called "mucking." He cleverly hides cards in his hand, so he can build a hand to beat you. It is done all the time.” Tina explained.

“So I have been working at the whore house to pay off my gambling debts to Kaas, that street vendor, but really I won that hand?” Draxx asked.

Tina nodded and said “You really need someone like me around … you trust people too much.” Prrip nodded at Tina’s statement as well.

The leopard woman had joined them after about an hour ago. Working her way through the woods to this spot. Tina had asked about the ranger, and Draxx had to explain that Wind Griffinrider had not made it. Prrip had remained pretty silence … as she could read lips … but neither Draxx nor Tina could “sign” back to her.

Tina and Draxx had started to drink and tell stories. They were discussing how Draxx had become a bouncer at the whore house … When they heard a drum start to beat and the movement of the Garlik Army started.

“Time to cause more trouble behind enemy lines?” Tina asked, a naughty smile on her face.

Draxx was not so sure “Maybe you two …I’m not really good at hiding” He said

Tina slipped her cloak of camouflage on. Then she pulled out a golden ring “I think you need to come along too … here ... put this ring on” She said giggling in a naughty way.

Devon

The ram could be a bit of a problem, especially with the lack of fire, Palamar was poorly designed in his oppinion, but all things can not be thought of when creating a castle and city. Finally the Rangers arrived, good timing as he could hear the outer wood on the gate start to crack,

"Those ogres, take them down with the Bodkin."

Six heads nodded and the rangers joined the other on the rampart, slipping through the moving formations like wraiths. Pretty soon ogres started to howl in pain and crash lifelessly to the ground, crushing Garliks as they did.

"SPEARS!! PIKEMEN!! POSITIONS!!"

The spearmen settled into a half moon formation, facing the gate, their spears at the ready, the Pikemen stood behind them, their pikes at the ready. The angles made the front look like an angry porcupine, all bristling points and blades. Devon hoped that they did not have to be used. Arrows struck some of the archers who leaned out a bit too far to fire at the ram, they fell screaming over the edge, or was thrown back. The ranks formed up quickly again, but Devon was losing men he could not afford to lose.

"Don't fire at the ram!"

This gave the archers more covering, but it didn't mean Devon had forgotten about the ram. Then a heat started to pulse against his chest, he frowned, reached in under his tunic and withdrew the stone that Gaia had given him.

"Use me"

It whispered to him, Devon had no idea what to do, so he held it on his open palm. There was a green flare and suddenly the ram bounced off the bark of an Irontree, the gem had turned the gate into a living Irontree and everybody knew that the only way to fell an Irontree was to chop it down with mithrill axes or saw it down. Devon took a deep sigh,

"Thank you."

He stuffed the gem back into his tunic, strangely his arm felt better after using the magic. Then his eye caught sight of pieces of rock and mason laying at the foot of the stairs. He ordered it brought up, some were so heavy that it took two knights to carry them. The hammering on the gate had slowed down a bit, Devon crept closer and peeked over the wall, half of the ram stuck out, it was just what he needed.

"All right, I need volunteers."

Immediately eight of the swordsmen stepped up. Devon nodded,

"I want you to drop this masonry and rock down on the support columns of the ram. On my signal."

They nodded and Devon headed back to his post,

"MEN! READY!"

The swordsmen picked up their selected weights,

"ARCHERS! TARGET THE ARCHERS!"

He waited a moment,

"FIRE!"

As the archers loosed he motioned and the swordsmen dropped the rocks and masonry onto the ram. The ram shuddered from the impact and it became clear that it would take at least three more tries. Devon called for the next salvo.

The Battle Tower

“Sire and General Zarik” A messager stated as he saluted both men. “There are reports of heavy fighting in all sectors. The Garliks have brought in battering rams … and are attempting to breech our main gates.”

The King nodded “Keep us posted of any breech …” He told the massager. Then he looked over to General Zarik “Any more tricks?”

Zarik shook his head “Not for now … it’s all up to our sector commanders … may the gods help them”

Lord Hillsong

“Father everything is ready” Lord Hillsong’s eldest son, Jonas reported.

“Good …” said the head of the Hillsong family confidently. “Then “allow” the gate to fail on my command”

“This had better work …” Jonas added.

Lord Hillsong smiled “Oh, it will work as long as everyone does their jobs” Then he added “You know son … Minotaurs are not the only ones that are clever! Fail the gate!” He ordered.

The Defending forces at the northern gate … had loosened the metal structure to hold close the great northern gate. Upon Lord Hillsong’s command they removed the last pin and when the Ogre’s ram struck, the gates opened. There were screams of victory … as the over-confident, Garliks and Ogres dropped the ram and ran into the city. Discipline outside the wall totally broke down as the undead Garliks all made a mad dash to get inside the city wall. The invaders had nothing on their minds except slaughtering all the living. The Garliks in the back of the attack worried that the first ones in would do all the killing and not leave any of the city's inhabitants for them. So the hoard charged in swiftly and recklessly.

Lord Hillsong had ordered a dozen “commoners” (actually they were members of the thieves guild) to be in the streets when the gate was opened. The moment the attacking Garliks saw them, the decoys retreated along the streets to lure the enemy into the traps set up in the houses and shops near the gate. The jubilant invaders raced after these fleeing "commoners".

The men had established firing positions on the roof tops of these building. Haldamir and Bronwym “civilian archers” popped up … and began to fire into the attacking hoard. The fleeing "commoners" went into houses or shops that had escape tunnels in them. They would set their walnuts to go off … disappear into the escape tunnels. And as the houses and shops filled up with Garliks looking for them … the structure would suddenly blow up!

As the attacking Garliks and Garlik Ogres took cover from the archers above behind carts and wagons on the street. The carts and wagons would explode … and dismembered bodies and body parts of Garliks would fly into the air.

For 10 minutes this went on … until Lord Hillsong ordered the gate closed. Behind each opened doors of the great northern gate were 20 Minotaur warriors. During the 10 minutes, the loosened metal locking device was retightened. As the order was given, Elven archers on the walls sprang up and deadly arrows rained down on the attackers both outside and inside the city. The archer’s arrows forced the Garliks outside the wall to retreat, thus preventing anymore Garliks from entering the city.

The Minotaurs teams behind the doors had one missions, clear the gate area so the gates could be reclosed. They fought as a unit … their axes swinging in unison. The small Garliks stood no chance, it was like swatting flies to the minotaurs. Only the 3 armored ogres slowed the Minotaurs down a little bit … but 40 Minotaurs with archer support against 3 Ogres was not a contest. The doors were reclosed. The Garlik forces inside the city were cut off and trapped. The garliks and Ogres outside the wall … had lost their ram and had no way to breakdown the gate.

Street bombs continued to explode … as Lord Hillsong and his eldest son watched. The air was filled with smoke and sounds. The roar of the explosions first then the agonized screaming of thousands of dying Garliks.

The surviving Garliks and Ogres began to fight the defenders house-to-house. The house to house fighting had caused sections of the northern parts of the city to catch on fire. The defenders had set up intentional “kill-zone” in the open areas like squares and markets. The surviving invaders surged into these squares and markets only to be “mowed” down by archers. Within a few minutes the plaza was full of dead Garliks. Mop up operates began … but the battle of the Northern gate was over. Lord Hillsong had achieved a stunning victory … too bad he would not survive to tell his son … Devon.

Princess Allonetree

Princess Allonetree was wearing her full elven battle armor, but some guards around her were wondering why it was necessary. Every arrow that came close … was magically deflected away from her. No attack against her was even remotely successful. She watched as the Ogres brought the battering ram into postion and prepared to hammer away at the eastern gate.

“I don’t want them to leave ANY marks on that fine gate!” She stated firmly. She raised her hand up to the night sky and whispered the words to a spell. A lightning sprang up in between her hands …. Growing larger and larger.

“Best stand back” she warned her human and minotaur subcommanders. As the lightning ball grew enormous … it could be seen over the eastern part of the battlefield …. It was as large as 3 houses … as the princess tossed the massive ball at the ogres carrying the ram. The resulting impact, electrocuted all the ogres in their metal armor, and completely destroyed the ram.

As her advisors returned to her side, they wore expressions of shock at the magical power the princess had released. She just smiled “It seemed the easiest way to prevent damage to the gate” She said

Col Yebrs

Col Yebrs was not a riddle master. He was a horn legion Minotaur. The way to defend a gate was via brute force. And this was the way his forces had been positioned as the Garliks attacked. His elven archers were on the city wall … firing arrows into the approaching enemy. His Minotaurs and Knights were positioned behind the gate … in case the gate failed. His civilian archers were placed on the roofs of the booby trapped houses and shops in case the Garliks got past the minotaurs and knights. And finally his small cavalry element was place in reserve, in case some other problem occurred, he could call on them.

His elven subordinate commander had however, talked him into one additional fail safe measure. He had reluctantly agreed to this. Actually, his subordinate commander had mentioned it to General Zarik at a planning meeting; the general loved the idea, and asked Yebrs the next day how it was going. The Col knew the only right answer to that question was “the fail safe measure is almost set up”. And they quickly executed it.

This was another thing Col Yebrs did not like about elves. They did not seem to understand the chain of command. No minotaur bull would dare go around Col Yebrs, yet this weak frail elf seemed to have no issue about under cutting his authority.

Across the burned, war torn plain the relentless horde of undead Garliks approached. The archers had opened up on them as soon as they were within range. And had killed many of them. But Col Yebrs was starting to understand why General Zarik had come up with tricks and traps for this enemy. The attacking force was so large it was like killing ants … sure you killed lots of them … but there were so many, they still over ran your position and killed you. These damn Garliks just kept coming.

The battle at the gate grew more intense. The southern gate, the one he was defending, was designed differently than the other gates. It had an outer main gate and a long tunnel with arrow slots leading to a much weaker inner gate.

In the ceiling of the gatehouse tunnel, there were openings called murder holes through which defenders could drop objects and hot liquid. The sides of the tunnel also had arrow holes.

Col Yebrs had prepared boiling oil … for the murder holes but had thought it would never get used. As he heard the cracking of the main gate from the blows of the Garlik Ogres, he realized the oil was going to be used and soon!

“Fire the catapults again!” he ordered. And another set of flying rocks were unleashed. The barrage shook the ground as he saw dozens of the enemy fly off in every direction … smashed. But still the Garliks continued to push forward … they seemed to have no fear, no matter how many his forces killed.

Col Yebrs turned to Leruth, his elf subordinate and stated “Does nothing stop these little demons!”

The elf shook his head “only death …” He answered

The main gate gave way minutes later … and the oil was poured into the murder holes. Many Garliks were destroyed … but still they came. Arrows were fired until they were depleted … and still the Garliks came. The weaker inner gate was breeched as the armored ogres just ripped them off their hinges.

The Minotaurs and Knights engaged the Garliks … and cut them to ribbons. But still they came … led by the armored ogres this time. The humans and Minotaurs fought valiantly … but started to lose members … they had to give ground. Even the horn legions finest … were not enough to stop this never-ending horde.

“I need to go down there myself!” Col Yebrs shouted to Leruth “We must drive them back out of the gate.”

The elf shook his head “Col, the two of us cannot drive back such an army … it is time for our little trick!”

Col Yebrs knew the elf was right … it was the only way. “Warned the knights and minotaurs … have them break off … I’ll create a distraction.” The big minotaur ran over to a massive barrel of hot oil used to lite the tar balls for the catapults … and picked it up …lifting it over his head … and hurled it down into the enemy ranks. There were screams … as a circle of dead was created below the Minotaur. He leapt off the command platform located on the city wall into the circle. He ROARED a minotaur challenge … his battle axe out and swinging.

“OVER HERE YOU BASTRADS … COME GET ME … I’M THE COMMANDER!” He shouted. Garlik Ogres turned and ran at him… Garlik archer fired arrows … Garlik foot soldier also attacked.

Leruth watched as the minotaurs and knights moved away from the main street leading to the southern gate. He signaled for the release of the rocks. And suddenly the ground shook like mad. Leruth could barely stay on his feet. As hundreds of boulders rolled towards the gate crushing everything in their path.

Leruth had gotten the idea for this defense … when the minotaurs were digging the trench. And were asking where could they put all the large rocks they uncovered. Leruth suggested using them as part of the defense. Now these same rocks smashed into the southern gate and wall. Luckily the rocks did not breech the wall or gate, but they did plug the gate tunnel nicely. Once the rumbling stopped, there was a mountain of rock against the southern gate which would take a team of Garlik Ogres a few days to move. There was so much dust and dirty in the air that Leruth needed to wait 5 minutes before he was sure nothing inside the gate area was alive. The rock avalanche had killed all the Ogres and Garliks. Unfortunately a few minotaurs and knights had not been quick enough to escape the lethal trap. But Leruth was most concerned about his commander … had Col Yebrs gotten away? He had been in the direct path of the rocks. His question was answer as a hand came over the edge of the wall and the Col pulled himself back up onto the command platform. His armor was dented, he was covered in dirt … and one of his horns had broken off.

“Well … that work well … good idea Leruth” He said and clapped the elf so hard on the back the big minotaur drove the elf to his knees. “I think the battle of the southern gate is over.”

The Battle Tower

“Sire and General Zarik” A messenger greeted the King and the Minotaur as he saluted both men. “The breech in Lord Hillsong’s sector has been contained. Attacks on the southern and eastern sectors have been repulsed. Ranger Devon Hillsong’s sector is still undecided but somehow the wooden gate has been turned into a living ironwood tree … it is unlikely the enemy will breech it!”

General Zarik looked over to the King “By the GODS … I’m proud of our commanders … I'm beginning to think we are going to win this!” He said. Moments later … he would understand how terribly wrong his confidence had been.

Mesoblubrons

A flying spy demon had just reported the failures of the Garliks and Garliks Ogres on all fronts.

“Send in the Hoak. Have the remaining Garliks and Garlik Ogres follow it. It is time for us to join the battle, each of you attack a gate … I’ll attack the King and the minotaur general!” the head Mesoblubron directed. The 5 floating eyes headed towards the city of Palamar.

This was followed by the ground rumbling … a massive black worm emerged from the ground … The thing was huge … it’s shrieked a challenge to the city and showed off it horrible jaws that contained three blade like teeth. Each set at equal angles to each other. The head of the worm then plunged into the ground … boring a tunnel under the trench … as it broke the surface again. Then it went back underground … and this time when it reappeared … it came up from under Lord Hillsong’s position on the northern gate. Its jaws opened and it swallowed the lord and his son and most of the wall. Then it shrieked at the defenders!

Out of the tunnel the worm had created … came the other half of the Garlik army!

Devon

"That's it, we're dead."

The tactics he employed had killed the ram-wielders and destroyed the ram. But now a tunneler have surfaced only to bring an army inside the gates. The Mesolbulbrons were joining the attack and you could only hide from the killing rays of their eyes for so long. Around him archers and swordsmen fell to the might of the demonic eye, garlik arrows and soon grappling hooks and ladders thudded against the wall.

"Well we had a good run."

With those words he drew his two short swords and readied himself for the breach. Funny thing was that no matter how much fire the Mesolbulbron focused on the gate, the wood remained alive and strong. There was only one way in and that was over the wall and any defender whom showed was killed by the demonic creature. Devon had called for his archers and swordsmen to retreat, he had lost over three quarters of his rampart defenders. As the first Garlik climbed over the wall, a deadly silence descended, all sounds seemed to hush. There was a lull in the fighting, then the worm tunneler shrieked in agony, shrivelled and died to the surprise of everybody. From all quarters around city came the mournful cry of ghostly spirits rose, followed by an intense cold. A peal of battle horns shook the earth and to everybody's shock Maut came riding from the wood facing the western gate.

Maut el Feres

Maut rode upon an undead dire wolf, it was slavering and itching to go to the kill. It was massive, almost twice the size of a horse. Maut wore his armor, a blue aura surrounded him. Behind him the shadows of the woods came alive and warriors stepped into the light. It was a mix of every race that was and is, from gnomes to trolls, even a few skeletan dragons lurched into view. It was a horrid face to look upon, corpses, skeletons, ghosts all the creatures which made up tales of horror and dread came out of the shadows. When Maut spoke his voice seemed to seem from every dark place in and and around the city, his voice as cold as ever.

"Greetings king Stoneshield, I have a message from my lady to your enemies."

Maut paused a few moments,

"Die demon spawn!"

A cacophany of sound erupted and Maut's steed shot forward as the undead slash dead army shot forward, swarning over and engulfing the Garlik reserves, last ranks and siege engines. Only fire from the Meslubulbron commanders halted the advance of Maut's army. Maut's arrival had wiped out another half of the remaining forces, what the defenders didn't count on was the ghosts who rose inside the city and fell on the invading army whom had breached the wall.

It would all have been over if not for the Mesolbulbrons, the undead and dead could not come near them for the fire killed and drove them back. Any Garlik who was stupid enough to come outaide the protection of the Mesolbulbrons died instantly. Maut sat upon his wolf, sword and shield in hand, his gaze on the demons who gaurded the remainder of their army. Behind him a charnel house of dead Garliks and ogres, around him the ash of his troops who did not fall back in time. There was only one way to win this and that was for Megan to do what she did to the last demon they faced.

The Battle Tower

As the massive worm appeared, things on the battle tower became frantic. Orders were shouted to move units back … heavy siege equipment was to target the massive undead monster. All of these efforts were in vain. The thing was moving too fast. It would reach Lord Hillsong’s northern gate position in less than a minute.

Zarik shouted to Ardel and Ikarus “IS THERE ANYTHING YOU CAN DO?”

Ikarus said “I’ll try … when it appears again!” as he went over to the northern edge of the tower and waited for the monster to appear out of the ground. Suddenly the monstrous thing broken out from under the northern gate … smashing the gate into pieces and swallowing Lord Hillsong. Ikarus summoned the most powerful fireball spell he had and launched it at the creature … the resulting explosion threw the monster’s head/mouth back as smoke filled the air … but moments later the worm’s head/mouth reappeared smashing through houses … as it headed for the command tower.

Battle song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8k7dyGzG5po

If you had been watching the city from an aerial view in the brightening morning sky…. You would have seen the great city surrounded by a massive army of garliks. Parts of the city were in flame. If you focused in on the high tower of the city. You would have seen King Stoneshield in his royal battle armor, his breaded face consumed by worry … then you would have seen Zarik step up behind him his hand clasped on the man’s shoulder. The minotaur in his golden armor said “Sire … I shall defend Palamar at whatever the cost … and when they breach the walls of the city … I will fight them on the ramparts … and the towers … and in the streets, I shall fight them until they are no more … or I’m dead!!” The King’s face grew hard with determination.

(it was the scene from the moonwell spell)

“YES … THAT IS WHAT WE MUST DO!” The king shouted as he pulled out his great sword. “Prepare to evacuate the command tower … I will not die like Lord Hillsong … I want to at least have my steel bite into this wicked worm!”

The battle for the city of Palamar was desperate. Garlik swarmed out of the hole in the ground created by the monstrous worm … the worm was smashing through the booby trapped houses … and the minotaurs, elves, humans, and citizen archers were inflicting some damage on the undead maggot looking worm but not enough.

Then the first rays of the morning light peeked above to horizon.

It was like someone had placed a blanket over the battle. All fighting stopped … as an intense cold swept over the city … the sound of thousands of ghostly spirits groaned as they rose from the ground.

Suddenly the monstrous worm shrieked in agony … Zarik could see the ghostly forms entering the thing’s segmented body … it thrashed once… and then shriveled up horribly … and was dead.

There were cheers in the city … but a peal of battle horns silenced them. Everyone a top the battle tower looked to the western gate were the horn blasts had come from.

There sitting on a massive dire wolf was Maut el Feres, a strange blue aura surrounded him. Behind him was a huge army of undead creatures. It was an epic image for an epic moment!

“FINALLY!” Zarik gasped and then whispered to himself “He was does know how to make an entrance!”

The King turned to Zarik and asked “Friend or Foe?”

Before Zarik could answer … Maut spoke in his cold dead voice “Greetings king Stoneshield, I have a message from my lady to your enemies."

Maut paused for moment … everyone waited for his words

Then he spoke "DIE DEMON SPAWN!"

Maut’s undead army attacked and ripped into the unprepared Garliks that still remained outside the city walls. Inside the walls the ghosts took down many of the Garliks. The bodies of the dead demons littered the fields as Maut’s army was only stopped by the Mesoblubron’s exploding fire beams.

Maut slashed and hatched his way through the Garlik demons … and was headed towards one of the Mesoblubron.

When the ground in front of him opened up. Rocks burst from under the ground and flew through the air. Maut pulled back on the dire wolf as the black void opened up ... he stop thus preventing himself and his steed from going into the blackness.

Out of the black void rose a demonlord. It was a fearsome being, as tall as two humans; the monster was equally wide and hulking. Totally black in color, as if the light that fell on it could not escape. Armored scales cover his humanlike form, but his face was gruesome, with large curved back horns that grew from his eyebrows. This was Nevil the self-appointed leader of the demon lords.

“Deathsknight …. Or should I more correctly say ABOMINATION” He said his large fangs visible was he spoke … the venom that drip from his fangs hissed as it fell into his mouth.

“The living are not your concern … and why you fight with them I do not know or care.” The evil being stated. “But I’m not here to debate … I’m here to destroy you and this city!” It stated.

“Watch as I bring back the Hoak … only making it MORE POWERFUL. Behold the KAOH!!” The demon shouted.

In the city, the ghosts within the massive black worm shrieked … as they exploded into nothingness. The worm re-inflated … and rose up again. Only this time its black body appeared to be made of some kind of super hard black stone … as hard as pure mithrill. The maggot worm again shrieked it challenge!

“Life will end … and change will stop!!” The demonlord stated, then he turn to the nearest Mesoblubron and said “Mesoblubrons … kill everything in that city!”

The demonlord turned back to Maut.

“No more speeches … it is time for you to DIE!” The demonlord screamed and a deadly magical black wall of fire sprang from his clawed hands heading directly toward Maut!

Draxx, Tina, Prrip

"Why are we doing this again?” An invisible form asked. The voice sounding just like a lizardman.

“Because … I get off on dangerous missions!” a bush that seemed to be moving answered.

“But it is just two big drums …” the invisible form stated.

“It annoys me …” the bush answered and moved closer to the group of Garliks and the two Garlik Ogres banging on the massive drums. A few minutes later two bushes and the invisible form were very close to the massive drum.

"Now what?" the invisible form whispered.

“You attack … and Prrip and I will back you up” the bush said.

“It does not seem fair to attack while I’m invisible” The voice with no form stated.

“There totally evil creatures trying to kill all life on the planet!” The bush said in frustration. Two Garlik heard her … and head over to the bush to find out what made the noise. Suddenly, the bush was gone … and there stood Tina her camouflage cloak pulled open as she threw two daggers, each impacting the approaching Garliks in the head. Both died instantly.

“HEY OGRES … CAN’T YOU PLAY SOMETHING A LITTLE MORE UP BEAT?” Tina yelled. There was a roar and the whole group attacked Ogres and Garliks. Tina and Prrip … took out the Garliks with surprising speed. Then watched Draxx, who remained invisible, use his mighty serrated edged Warhammer against the armored ogres. It was almost funny. As the lizard man struck … An Ogre would be sprung around by the invisible blow … almost like the Ogre was doing a dance by itself. Pieces of armor ripping off and denting on their own. Until one ogre’s helm caved in and another chest was ripped open. The ogres were dead.

“Ok Draxx … stop fooling around with those Ogres and destroy the drums!” Tina said as Prrip and her watched for any approaching Garliks.

Draxx used his Warhammer on the drums … ruining them. He started to get into the spirit of this kind of fighting and said “Oooops … i hope the garlik have insurance to cover that!"

The three again became invisible and looked for another target. It was Prrip’s turn to pick, and the leopard woman pointed at the nearest floating eye ball. The group moved off to intercept it.

The Battle Tower

“DUCK!” the king yelled and the minotaur head dropped just in time … as the mesoblubron life draining light beam passed over the big bull.

Zarik grabbed a stone from the tower wall and broke it off in a feat of sheer strength. He brought the stone over his head ... and threw it at the ugly eyeball. The mesoblubron turned to water to allow the stone to pass through its body. Ardel said the last word of his transformation spell and the stone Zarik had thrown turned into a massive fire ball.

The eye ball screamed in pain

The Wizard taunted the eyeball “Two can play at the change game!”

The eye ball glued back together … and went after the wizard. Ardel scrambled around the small stairway structure … as the eyeball floated over the tower top King Stoneshield stabbed up with his sword right into its body. The eyeball could not change because it did not see the attack coming.

The Mesoblubron screamed in pain …as Zarik reached in and pulled the King out from under the eyeball.

“We can't keep this up!” The King yelled

“I know … we need Megan Frostblood!” Zarik yelled back.

The eyeball turned toward the King and Zarik and prepared to end their lives!

Megan Frostblood

Megan hung on to Nas … as they literally SCREAMED through the sky. The big red-bronze dragon was in a dive bomb … and the speeds he could reach doing this cause the air to whistle around him and in this case her as well.

Nas saw the people on the battle tower and the Mesoblubron preparing to destroy them. His great jaw opened, his neck straightening and a massive, red-white cone of fire spewed out, instantly banishing the shadows of early morning dawn. The cone of flames engulfed the eyeball … Nas knew the creature would change to its fire resistant form. A hard protective covering … that is why he did not change course … and SMASHED INTO the eyeball with his out stretched fore claws. The fire resistant form of the mesoblubron flew into the ground with such force it created a carter. Nas opened his wings once the eyeball was headed for the ground and pulled up from his dive. He banked back to the battle tower and Megan jumped off.

Isca and Venar-surr

“Let’s go after that one!” Isca suggested …as the copper-emerald dragon sped towards one of the attacking eyeballs. Venar-surr timed her wind blast perfectly … as she blasted the eyeball into the ground. A light beam was fired back at them … but the dragon easily avoided it.

“Your turn!” Venar-surr said to Isca as the dragon lined up for another pass.

The eyeball was ready for them this time … and fired a beam of light at them. Isca used a fog spell in front of the eyeball… and the light never reached them. But the dragon reached the mesoblubron as Venar-surr burst out of the fog and smashed into the eyeball. It happened so quickly … the mesoblubron could not change form and it SPLATTED on to the ground. The creature screamed at them as it reformed.

“Nice one!” Venar-surr said to Isca as she regained altitude, Nefer head popped out of the backpack gave a "thank you" meow!

Demonlord

The Demonlord had turned back to Maut.

“No more speeches … it is time for you to DIE!” He had screamed and launched the deadly magical black wall of fire right toward Maut!

Then the lights went out … as Gragathor massive right leg landed in front of Maut … and the flames went around the deathknight.

Gragathor’s left leg smashed down on the demonlord. Hammering the demon back into the ground. The ground shook from the massive dragon's landing. The huge dragon looked at Maut and spoke.

“It does not truly existence on this plane … so you will not be able to kill it. However, you can remove it from our plane ... I must kill the worm” The massive dragon sprang back into the air. Where Gragathor had crushed the demonlord … the demonlord reappeared. But now he seemed to have a 10 fold increase in his anger level!

Draxx. Tina and Prrip were having fun. They had headed towards the floating eye, dealing out damage to isolated groups on the way. By the time they got close to the eyeball they had defeated several dozen ogres and scores of Garliks.

They took their time to study the thing before them. The big eyeball was looking towards the castle and hadn't spotted them as far as they could tell. There was a large clear space around it, as if it's own kind could not stand to be around it. This would help them when they began to battle it as they would not have to worry to much about a rear attack for a little bit.

Draxx checked their meager supplies. They had three nuts left, one healing potion and several empty wine skins. Not a lot to fight a being like this with. He handed the nuts to Prrip. She was the fastest and the most accurate with them and was the best to have them. Draxx checked his hammer and Tina her sword and then all three disappeared from sight.

Seconds later a huge explosion ripped along it's back as Prrip used one of the walnuts. Fire spread outwards from the site and the beast roared in pain as it stopped moving and began to sweep the area looking for the creatures that had hurt it.

Tina and Draxx had made it to the creatures side and as it began turning Draxx moved one way and Tina the other. They made sure to stay out of it's line of sight and once Draxx was sure Tina had had enough time to be in position he brought his hammer down in a mighty blow just near the huge eye. Again the huge beast screamed and turned but just as suddenly Tina thrust her sword into it from the other side. Prrip meanwhile leaped onto it's back and proceeded to rip away at it with her claws.

A light of intense brilliance burst from the eye but Tina and Draxx had been keeping well away from the gaze of the beast. Unfortunately with all of their exertions Tina and Prrip's cloaks had shaken loose and they were becoming visible. They needed a way to end this fight soon or they would all be dead.

Isca, Venar-surr and Nefer

As the mesoblubron reformed it screamed up at the three of them from the ground, Isca thought, (If only it couldn't see us.....mmmmmm). She quickly leaned towards Venar-surr,

"Venar-surr, can you get me close to the side of that eyeball creature? I have an idea. but need to be very up close and personal! First let me cast a huge smoke screen around it while it's still on the ground."

The copper-emerald dragon nodded yes, as Isca spoke the spell with the aid of Nefer's meow, and threw it at the ground surrounding the mesoblubron. That is when Venar-surr made her move towards where they had last seen the eyeball. Her instinct proved right on, in seconds the three of them were at the creature's side, the eyeball tried to see through the heavy blue/black smoke. Nefer hissed as soon as she sensed the thing near them. Isca shushed her.

As soon as Isca cast her smoke spell, she started on the next one, hoping her idea would be successful. She conjured up a large reflecting flexible sheet, hoping it was about the right size to cover the mesoblubron's huge iris. She waited until Venar-surr took them close enough to the side of the eyeball. Isca, stepped onto the base of the dragon's wing, with her sheet, leaning dangerously close. There was no time to make a mistake, if it detected them, it would be over, they would not have the chance to escape it's killer light beam.

Isca couldn't reach over far enough, she had to jump at it from the side hoping to slide her sheet into place and fall to the ground. As she leaped at it, it turned enough for Isca to slap the sheet into place, before she and Nefer hit the ground rolling. Instantly they were up and running, Isca followed Nefer towards the direction they hoped Venar-surr was still at.

The messoblubron roared as it tried to rid itself of the sheet covering it's eye. It was now blind, the sheet reflected any kind of light back outwards, all it saw now was blackness. It screamed out it's frustration and knew it could be destroyed now.

Some of the smoke was starting to drift away, as soon as Isca and Nefer found their dragon, they saw that the creature was not ten feet away, Isca shouted,

"Venar-surr....KILL IT...KILL IT NOW!...before it gets a chance to knock the sheet off."

The Princess and the Bull (a fairy tale)

ONCE upon a time there was a minotaur who wanted to save a princess; after defending his gate … and then blocking it with a ton of rocks … the bull went off to find a princess. He had heard, there was a beautiful princess guarding the gate next to his, it was called the eastern gate.

When he got to the eastern gate there was a terrible storm; there was thunder and lightning, and dead garliks and garlik ogres everywhere. Suddenly, he saw the princess. She was battling a horrible monster … called a mesoblubron. But she was running out of spells.

The bull made a decision and ran to save the princess … as he got closer to her … what a sight she was … the rain and the wind had made her hair and clothes all wet; But she was still the most beautiful elf he had ever seen.

She had thrown her last fireball spell at the monster so the creature could not use its deadly beams of light to hurt anyone. But the monster was powerful … and change into its fire resistant form ... and then back again.

The bull had one chance to save the princess … he took the flat side of his battle axe and in a might blow … struck a stone on the curtain wall … it was pulverized into sand and sprayed into the many eyes of the mesoblubron. The monster could not see … and in those few moments the bull grabbed the princess and jumped off the curtain wall.

The monster changed into its water from … ridding it of the sand. But when the monster changed back into its solid form … it did not know where the princess and the bull had gone.

The two lived happily ever after

The End (well … not quite! … I hope everyone liked that “fairy tale mode … Now, I will go back to normal)

“Col Yebrs …” Princess Allonetree whispered trying not to breathe the foul air “where are we?” She asked. The place smelled very strongly of methane.

“The sewer” The minotaur answered

The elf princess looked at the minotaur, cleared her throat, and said “Do you take all your dates down here?”

“Only the ones I really care about!” He answered with a charming smile. “I think there is a way out in this direction” the two headed in the direction the minotaur indicated. They found a heavy iron sewer cover and Yebrs lifted it off. Then helped the princess out … both of them were covered in sewage. They were in an alleyway … surrounded by burning buildings. Yebrs wedged a small stick between the sewer cover and the alleyway structure “Just in case we need to get back in there” He said … and then added “That building is not burning we can hide in there” he suggested. They started to move in that direction when behind them they heard evil laugher.

Turning they saw the Mesoblubron looking right at them. Floating closer. “Time to DIE Princess!” The eyeball said.

Megan BloodFrost

Megan Bloodfrost stood atop the battle tower … Her eyes filled with intense concentration … She was an Illumian!! And these demonlords were soon going to know what that truly meant. The series of glowing runes whirled around her head as her long, red hair blew in the morning breeze …

She watched all five Mesobulbron. She was trying to see which frequency the magical energy that was feeding them was coming in on. But she could not find it. She would catch it for a second then it would disappear. Without knowing the frequency she could not jam the energy.

The Mesobulbron in the carter below her began to re-assemble … she was running out of time. “Think Megan! Think” She said to herself … “You don’t have much time”

Ardel and Ikarus were next to her “Megan … can I help?” Ardel asked

“The demonlords have changed something … I can’t jam the energy like last time. The energy does not stay stable!” she answer … panic creeping into her voice.

The Mesobulbron below them had reformed and taunted them … “Too Bad … I guess it is time for you to DIE!”

Lackleria, the young woman that had detected the demonlord’s magical jump over the river had overheard Megan’s statement. She came running over to Ikarus. “Master Ikarus … have you told her about the new hiding technique they used to cross the river?” She suggested.

Ikarus gasped “No” Then turned to Megan “Megan, look for a hop in the frequency!”

“Protect me!” Megan said as her eyes only looked for the magical energy streams through the various frequencies. She opened up her mind and then saw the jumping energy stream.

Her jamming signal would need to hop with the energy stream. Watching the signal she realized it would take a feat of unbelievable skill and concentration to jam the energy. Everything in the world depended on her succeeding … Megan saw the signal and then fired off her jamming signal. She hopped with the signal cancelling it out each time …

This was one of those moments in her life … where she was completely focused … she was so completely focused she could do the impossible … Megan was in the zone!! It was beautiful to watch … every frequency the signal jumped to … was jammed almost right away.

All five mesoblubrons knew they had lost their energy feed. All magical energy to them had been canceled. They were all vulnerable!

The one near the tower screamed and headed right for Megan.

King Stoneshield voice carried over the battlefield amplified by magic “The mesoblubrons are vulnerable … ATTACK NOW!!” He ordered.

The Princess and the Bull concluded

The Floating eyeball came closer and said “Time to DIE Princess!” Then Mesoblubron suddenly looked uncomfortable as Princess Allonetree heard King Stoneshield’s statement about their vulnerability and his order to attack. She knew the thing was vulnerable … but she had almost no spell energy left! But an idea came to her … she needed to buy just a little more time.

So she said “Sounds like it is YOUR TIME TO DIE!” and cast a simple “start fire” spell on the stick holding open the sewer cover … the Methane in the sewer system EXPLODED with a powerful energy … and the sewer cover was propelled upwards with deadly force. The mesoblubron did not even see it coming as the cover was right below it. The thick metal cover ripped the monster into multiple pieces … killing it for now …

Col Yebrs and the Princess ran quickly to “pin” pieces of the monster using daggers to different buildings to keep them from recombining.

As a side note: the methane explosion affected all the sewer covers in this half of the city. One after the other flew into the air … as the explosion ripped through the sewer. This is where the city came up with a new phrase “the covers are blown ... the shit is really flying ... now!” to describe a bad situation.

Draxx,Tina and Prrip heard King Stoneshield's voice even over the sounds of battle. Prrip renewed her attack on top of the monster ripping and gouging out huge chunks. Tina cut away slices of it with every stroke but Draxx knew that it was only going to be vulnerable for a short time and they were not causing it enough harm.

"You are running out of time you pitiful creatures," the Mesoblubron taunted them. "I will soon have my powers back and then I will destroy you all."

Draxx grew furious. Stepping in front of the giant eye he removed the ring of invisibility and tucked it in his pouch then raising his hammer he shook it directly in front of it and yelled "My name is Draxx Sawtooth, a Kroxigor warrior and you will be killing no one today." With that he gave a mighty swing and plunged straight into the iris of the beast. His swing had opened up a major wound in the beasts main eye and as it screamed and thrashed around, Draxx threw his axe to the ground and used his natural claws on his remaining hand to tear it open more.
Prrip saw what was happening from where she had been thrown off and ran over to help. Between the two of them they had quickly burrowed their way through the eye into the brain like cavity. Prrip immediately guessed Draxx's plan and pulled out the last two nuts and threw them in giving them 10 seconds to run. As they turned Draxx lagged behind but Tina grabbed under his good shoulder.
"Oh no you don't. You and I have a date later at a certain old workplace of yours remember? Now start running."
They made it a good fifty yards before the monster blew up and the pieces began burning.
Standing up they gazed towards the city. A major fight was going on between the biggest dragon they had ever seen and a demon lord. Several other dragons were fighting elsewhere and between them and the castle gates were several thousand Garliks.
"Well," Tina grinned at her two companions, "Let's not keep them waiting shall we. Oh and Prrip if by some miracle we do get out of this, Draxx and I have a little party we would like to invite you to."
Draxx turned to look at Tina then gave her a little grin and nodded at Prrip who grinned and nodded back. Well he couldn't afford to die now. 3 of the best prostitutes in the best brothel in town waiting for him and now 2 of the greatest and yes gorgeous women he had ever had the pleasure of fighting beside willing to join in. These Garliks wouldn't know what hit them, literally. He put his ring back on and the two girls wrapped their cloaks around themselves once again. Seconds later three hazy shadows ran off towards the castle grinning from ear to ear.

Isca and Venar-surr

The messoblubron roared as the reflective mirror was over its eye. The voice of King Stoneshield rang over the battlefield “The mesoblubrons are vulnerable … ATTACK NOW!”

Venar-surr stretched out her wings, and angled down to intercept the floating eyeball. She swooped, picking up speed for the kill. All the hatred that was in her … came out in that dive … She opened her dragon mouth gave a COLOSSAL dragon roar!

She screamed at the top of her lungs in the draconic language “OHHH DEMONLORDS … VENAR-SURR HAS HER REVENGE!!!” As she blast out her breath weapon … the powerful burst of wind … SMASHING the eyeball into the ground … the mesoblubron tried to fight back … sending out its fire blast ray … but the mirror sent it back at itself and it burned a hole right though its own body!. Venar-surr jaws grabbed the remains of the eyeball and smashed it over and over onto the ground … scatter parts everywhere … across the field. Isca noticed … this was a field that had not burned. One of the fields the ranger was to light on fire.

She smiled and said “bye bye … eyeball!” and lite the field on fire! The small pieced of eyeballs were engulfed in flames. “Venar-surr … we need a pick up” Isca asked before the flames reach her and Nefer. The dragon flung the remaining piece of eyeball away and the wizard climb onboard. They took off … but Isca noticed the smoke from the flames … trying to come together … so she cast a wind spell … and blew the smoke away in all directions.

Gragathor vs the Worm

The massive dragon dove down on to the worm … trying to catch it by surprise. But Gragathor was no young wee dragon. He was just too big and the worm saw him coming. The Creature bore into the ground to escape the huge dragon. But Gragathor swooped in too fast and his shape claws SCRAPPED along the sides of the worm trying to grab it before it went completely underground. But his claw did not sink into the sides of the creature. The worm's skin was so hard … he could not hold it at all. The creature was under the ground and gone. Gragathor knew what was coming next and quickly tried to jump into the air … just as the ground under him erupted … and the giant worm came out to bite into the dragon. It missed the main part of Gragathor's body … but did manage to slash his left hind leg. The colossal dragon dodged to the right escaping further damage … and blasted the worm with a great plume of fire. The creature received no damage.

The slash from the worm told Gragathor one thing … the creature could have killed him had he stuck Gragathor in the belly. His thick hide offered no protection from the monster's bite. And so far Gragathor attacks had done nothing. The thing hide was impenetrable!

That left one area to attack. The worm was back under the ground so Father dragon decided to lightly land back on the ground his great wings still beating … there was significant risk in what he was about to do … but it seemed the only way to defeat this foe. The worm again burst from the ground … Gragathor dodged at the exact right time, so the worm missed him ….and then Gragathor did something unthinkable. His claws gripped the worms head/mouth and the dragon open his jaws clamped it on the worm’s mouth … and he BLASTED HIS HOTTEST BREATH RIGHT DOWN THE WORM’S MOUTH … the creature shrieked and failed about …as flames actually came out of the worm’s back end. And then the worm stopped moving and was dead.

Gragathor released the now very dead worm and roared in triumph!
