They did it to themselves. A responsible adult like William F. Buckley should have foreseen as long ago as the 1960s that his "no enemies to the right" strategy and Nixon's Southern Strategy would eventually lead to something like the Tea Party and the Trump nomination. The Establishment Pubs have spent decades now pandering to and whipping up the very worst impulses of hate and fear and resentment and bigotry and stupidity among conservative whites, all for the sole sake of winning elections, and this is the logical and inevitable result, the responsible adults have lost control of the party.
