Good mornin' to ya!

It is a great weekend down here. Who would know it is August!

Good Morning all. It looks like it is going to be a great weekend. The weather is actually nice for this time of year in Houston. That will make the tailgating before the Texans-Cowboys game even better.

Have a hamburger for me, ok? *grilling* YUM

well ty someplace

I was wondering where all the Houston Area people were hanging out. I am from Houston, born and raised. Currently living in Pasadena and working in East Houston. I do get on the pc quite frequently, I work nights so hence the reason I am on so much during the day. Well I hope everyone has a good weekend.

Don't live in Houston,

But I thought I would drop in to say I am heading your way this week.

Your timing is lucky! We are having such INCREDIBLE weather for this time of year. The humidity is non-existant and it is cool outside this morning. Of course, it warms up in the afternoon, but it is not your typical August around here! Be sure to look on the weather channel or website to check out the changes. I hear there is finally rain coming.

So, what brings you to our fair city? Need some advice on places to go or restaurants not to miss?

I'm Wild Cherry is THE Restaurant Queen. She knows EVERYWHERE to dine. Her advice is spot-on, too. :D

I am going to your fair city on business (my company has a facility there). Actually, I've been there about 7-8 times in the last couple years, so I am somewhat familiar with the eateries in the area I stay at. (I make a point to always catch a couple of Texas BBQ restaurants when I am there).

However, I would still be happy to hear any advice you have. The area I stay at is off 59, a couple exits past the Galleria area (not sure if my spelling of Galleria is correct). I don't know the downtown area very well at all. I once went to an Astros-Cubs game (I am from Chicago - my Cub's fan loyalty was definitely in the minority for that game) at what was then Enron field, but that is my only foray into downtown, other than driving through it coming from the airport. (If I arrive anytime near rush hour, I take the beltway around downtown, during non peak hours I drive through it).

One unfortunate part of my travels to you city is I go there to oversee production at a manufacturing plant that operates 24/7. Therefore, it is not uncommon for me to be stuck in the plant all night. Also, it is generally unpredictable which nights I will be free to explore the city and which nights I will be stuck in the plant.

With that said, I still welcome your suggestions. If I can't take advantage of them this week, it is possible I can in the future.

..and I still find the comment about no humidity right now to be difficult to believe. My usual experience is to walk out of air conditioned buildings or cars and immediately being unable to see as my glasses fog up due to the humidity. In fact, if I think about it I put my glasses in my pocket first to avoid this situation.

I'm assuming this is expense account money or do I need to be more frugal?

My meals can be expensed (within Company defined limits). Due to the expense limits, I actually have to be somewhat frugal even for those meals. However, if there is something that is absolutely not to be missed, I could do it out of my own pocket if necessary. However, I am traveling alone. Therefore, I tend not to go into any of the nicer restaurants, as I would feel a bit strange doing this by myself. (Of course, if you or any other Houston area Lit lady would care to join me, this situation could be different).

Any entertainment - I am also on my own. Again, though, if thre is something that is absolutely not to be missed, I would be interested even though it is out of my own pocket.

Ok, knowing that, I'll be working on my list. If the timing is ok, I'll send it to you this evening. I want to go out and enjoy 80 degrees in the afternoon in August!

Some favorite restaurants around the Houston area:

The top portion of the list are places I'd not go alone. The bottom portion is in no apparent order - just as they rattle off my head.

(Feel free to add others, everyone.)

Chez Nous - often rated #1 French restaurant in the Houston area. It is actually in Old Humble.

Melting Pot - Fondue restaurant on Westheimer. Dinner takes 2 - 3 hours.

Michelangelo's - Italian on Westheimer.

Taste of Texas - I-10 Best damn steak I've ever had.

Brennan's - downtown Smith street

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anything in the Pappa's chain - Pappasito's (Tex-Mex) and Pappadeaux's (Seafood) are my two favorites

Eatzi's - near the Galleria for easy take out. They have everything from salads, sandwiches on fabulous bread and entrees to be carried out. This would be ideal for a stash of yummies to take back to your hotel.

PF Chang's China Bistro - Westheimer

Cheesecake Factory - in the Galleria on Westheimer. Everything I've had there is good but be sure to save room for a piece of dulce de leche cheesecake.

Chipotle - very informal place for football sized burritos. Many locations around town.

Bistro Provence - casual French restaurant with unhurried service on Memorial Dr.

Niko Niko's - Greek dive on Montrose near Westheimer. They are remodeling till September so it's iffy right now. Food is good and cheap.

Nit Noi's - Thai restaurant w/ three or four locations. The locations on Woodway or the Bolsover (Rice University area) are closest to you. They don't make it as spicy as most restaurants. If you want it to burn, let them know and they can do it.

Red Robin's for casual fare - similar to Bennigan's type menu. I know there is one at I-10 near loop 610.

Aquarium restauraunt in Kemah. I like to sit on the patio area and watch the boats. There is another location downtown but I've not been there.

Mo Mong - upscale Vietnamese on Westheimer - The Bo Luc Lac is yummy!

King Fish Market - two locations Richmond avenue and I-10 near Kirkwood Skip the fried items and get something grilled.

James Coney Island - chili dogs the way they should be made!! Many locations around town

If someone was here from out of town and I had to pick one off IWC's list, I'd choose Taste of Texas. Hands down. Well worth the trip.

Bluesboy swears by Mings, on Montrose near Westheimer, right across the street from Niko Niko's -- but I've yet to get there.

Kemah and Seabrook:

The Aquarium in Kemah is nice, but I prefer the Flying Dutchman next door. Better food and a little less expensive.

Also, just down the road from there is T-Bone Tom's. AWESOME steak and chicken fried steak and not expensive. They also have live bands on Friday nights.

Tookie's has wonderful cheeseburgers, great onion rings and a funky 70's decor.

Neptune Subs: a dive, but great sandwiches. Plus they have bald Monday's- bald guys eat free!

The Crazy Cajun: Bar none the best crawfish I've ever had. This man KNOWS how to season!!! A hole in the wall little shack, but the BEST cajun and seafood!! I also recommend the stuffed steak, chicken and sausage gumbo, and hush puppies. Not exactly cheap- but worth every penny.

Seabrook Classic Cafe- GREAT food! Friendly service, not expensive. I recommend the coconut/beer battered shrimp.

If you're in Clear Lake but closer to the freeway than the water:

The Colleseum (Italian of course!) On El Camino Real between El Dorado and Bay Area Blvd. A family-owned restaurant that has been in Clear Lake since the rocks were forming. SO GOOD- the only place my Sicilian mother will eat spaghetti besides her own. Great pizza too and cheap!

The Oriental Gourmet:Great Chinese buffet. Clean, huge variety of food, sushi bar, good desserts too. Very inexpensive.

Frenchie's- Another great Italian restaurant. On Nasa Rd. 1 and El Camino. Hangout for the astronauts and Nasa workers. Great food! Family owned- very nice people. Not expensive.

I45-Hobby Airport area:

Gringo's- GREAT Mexican food. Not expensive- free ice cream for the kids. Potent margaritas ) But get there early, it gets crowded fast!

Southwest Houston- 59/Kirby/Shepperd

Carabba's- the ORIGINAL on Kirby. Johnny and Luke still own this one and the food there is the best! Plus, you can find pictures of my family on the walls. Very popular so either go early or really late unless you like waiting forever for a table.

Star Pizza (59 and Shepperd) The BEST pizza in town!! Specialty is Chicago deep dish, but can make it any way you like. Excellent variety of toppings, funky atmosphere.

59 Diner (next door to Star Pizza) Diner food at it's finest. I love the milkshakes!

I must say with a very sad heart that my favorite ice cream place has closed- Dolce and Freddo on Kirby. Awesome Italian gelato...sigh. Now's it's a friggin Ben and Jerry's:rolleyes:

I-10 (Katy)

Logan's Roadhouse (On Hwy 6 between I-10 and Westheimer)

GREAT steak, ribs, bread, everything! You will NOT leave there hungry in the slightest- you will be in much pain..

Hope this helps!

I'm Wild Cherry:

Thank you for taking the time to put your list together. I hope to have the chance to try some of them. If not this week, there will likely be other trips in the future.

Someplace: your highest recommendation from IWC's list is one that she says she would not go to alone (and I will be traveling alone). Would you agree with her assessment of not going there alone?

Once again, thanks everyone for your help. Heading your way soon.

gina3:

Thank you also for adding to the list. (I just saw your post after I entered mine).

I will have to print out some of these posts. Not sure how many chances I will have to try these suggestions (and without looking at a map I'm not sure where all these places are), but I will try to experience some of them.
