How did the Borg Collective get started?

Every species they assimilate is numbered, so there must be a species 1, right? Presumably some species with individual minds somehow developed a hive mind based on mechanically assisted telepathy.

I'm thinking the process started with iPhones . . .

I think they assimilated a Betazed-like race(not the Betazeds themselves) that are now extinct. Imagine that society's fall being an allegory for AI and tech gone haywire as a plot explored in a future series(like a "Picard" analog with Janeway).
