to a size that will allow me to post them on this site when I click on the "Browse" target below the "Message" box?

Is there a way to upload an image directly from my "My Pictures" folder onto the site in a message? If so, please let me in on the secret. Nothing ever seems to work for me. All my images are too big and take up too much space. I'd like to know if there's a way I can upload the pics I want to have viewed without having to link to another site or window. I'm kind of slow when it comes to this type of stuff. Pleeeeeeeeeeeease help me!!!!!!!! lol

you just need to resize the image... if you dont have any graphics program you can use paint ........... open your picture with paint and click on Image and then Image Attributes and put in the size you want the image to become. Something not over 400 x 400pixels usually works. Then just click save as, save it as a jpg and you should be good to go ....... hope that helps

Thanks, Crimson Blonde

I'm gonna try your advice later this afternoon when it's not 3:50 AM. lol I can't believe I'm still on my fucking computer. I'm suuuuuuuuuuuch a dooooooooooooorrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrk. lol

You can upload an image from"My Pictures" as an attachment, but it will NOT display as an image automatically. Lit is configured to show attachements as links because when they displayed automatically, the Server load caused by the number of calls to "attachment.php" slowed the whole forum down to a crawl.

First, download IrfanView or Paint Shop Pro (The download for Painshop is a 30 day trial version, Irfanview is completely free) or read the help menu of your preferred Photo Editing Program to learn how to set the JPG comression ratio and change the units of measurement to Pixels.

Second, Open an image youwant to post to Lit with Irfanview (or another program that allows sizing to specific pixel dimensions.)

Third, Choose Resize from the Image menu and enter 600 in the larger of the two dimensions -- make sure that "preserve aspect ratio" is checked so both dimensions are adjusted.

(note, if both dimensions are less than 600, resizing isn't necessary.)

Fourth, Choose "Save AS" from the file menu and "JPeg" as the file type. Change the name slightly by adding a number or exclamation point to the filename. then click SAVE.

Fifth, attach the image to your post using the Browse button to find the resized copy of the image.

If you're resizing for an avatar instead of an attachment, change "600" to "150" in step three and resize if it's smaller or larger to start with.

Most images will compress enough with Irfanview or Paintshop Pro's default JPeG compression/quality setting to meet the 100Kb size limit. for those very few that don't, simply open the copy, change the JPeg compression setting with the "advanced" button in the Save As dialogue (or via File Options in PSP) and resave the copy.

Animated GIFs are the only exceptions to this procedure -- to resize an animated GIF, you need to go to GIFWorks.com or find a good animation program.

theres also another free program that is basically a stripped down version of photoshop.
I cant remember the name of it though
they were talking about it on TechTV not long ago
go to www.thescreensavers.com and do a search for graphics programs and free the host named Sarah was talking it

I couldn't find any image managers, unless you're thinking of the Thumbnail preview add-on Sarah was touting last month.

Paintshop Pro is what irfanview wants to be when it grows up but I couldn't find any photoshop wannabe's at Tech TV's site.

I'm STILL

getting it wrong. Fuck... I've got to be the most computer illiterate motherfucker in the world.

I'm using "Ulead Photo Express 4.0 SE"

I can resize the image without problems... but for some ungodly reason I can't seem to convert the file extensions to make it fit as an attachment when I post...

Can one of you smarter Litizens explain to me what I'm doing wrong and what I need to do to correct the problem?

I know you've been trying, but could you break it down into layman's terms for me? Please?

I'm not familiar with Ulead Photo Express -- in fact I've never even heard of it before. If you insist on using that program, the Help menu entires for "Save AS" or "Export as JPeG" or "Jpeg Quality settings" are your best source of information.

What is Ulead's "native format?" i.e. what is the file extension it uses to identify images in it's normal format?

I do know that some software uses "Export" instead of "Save As" and that may be your problem, but I haven't found a progrm yet that can't convert images to BMP and JPeg format in addition to whatever "Native Format" it might have.

Check out IrfanView -- aside from being very good at resizing and very simple to use, it can handle over a hundred different image formats and convert between all but couple of the formats it can read. For Example, Kodak's Picture CD (PCD) format is proprietary for writing the format, but not for reading it.

Also, if you have MS Office, check and see if you installed MS Photo Editor -- MS PE isn't quite as easy as IrfanView or Paintshop Pro, but it's fairly simple and reliable for resizing JpeG, GIF, BMP, WMF (Windows MetaFile) and TIFF (Fax image) formats and converting from one to another with the "Save AS" option on the file menu.

BTW, If you're using a MAC instead of Windows, it helps if you mention that when you ask tis sort of question -- the selection of image editors for MACs is different from the selection for Windows/PC computers. The best Image editors for MAC are probably the Adobe Software programs -- PhotoShop and Photo Deluxe. They're harder to figure out but there is ton's of advice sites for them on the Web.

Give this a try with Irfanview: Irfanview Tutorial
That tutorial is a little bit outdated in consideration of the latest version of Irfanview and it's exact features, but the basics on how to re-size and crop are the same.

Good luck...

I finally took everyones' advice and downloading Irfanview and all that. I'm going to see if I can educate myself on this stuff. I'll be back later. See ya. Thanks.
