I can just imagine the answers I'm going to get (PC and WD don't let me down!)

In reading some of the recent ramblings, I realized that when someone says interracial, I naturally assume black/white. I know this is due in large part to the stigma that that particular union has always been subjected to.

When you hear/read/see the term "interracial", do you think of a specific pairing?

im being difficult but ...

lisa's from canada and im from uk ... i think thats more interracial then a black and white person :)

after all theres probably more psychological differences from living in a different country then having a different skin colour

Now that's a different slant, and one that I can't imagine being from the US. Only being 200+ years old as a country, almost everyone is from someplace else. I don't think I've ever even given thought to two people the same color being of a different ethnic origin.

As to the differences between Canada and the UK, I'll just keep my provincial mouth shut :)

I think that depends on the active caste/class system. I suspect, once again, that a lot is based on the parcel of dirt you happen to be standing on.

Well there is only one race on the planet and that is the Human Race. so to me interracial would have to be a human and some alien creature from another planet.

Somehow, I knew I was going to have to do this...

Main Entry: race
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle French, generation, from Old Italian razza
Date: 1580

1 : a breeding stock of animals

2 a : a family, tribe, people, or nation belonging to the same stock b : a class or kind of people unified by community of interests, habits, or characteristics <the English race>

3 a : an actually or potentially interbreeding group within a species; also : a taxonomic category (as a subspecies) representing such a group b : BREED c : a division of mankind possessing traits that are transmissible by descent and sufficient to characterize it as a distinct human type

4 obsolete : inherited temperament or disposition

5 : distinctive flavor, taste, or strength

How Do You Define Interracial?

I don't, it's an outmoded way of looking at the world.

Now I find that interesing also...

Don't you think that we all have differences that stem from the influence of a culture that may not be universal?

i agree with bob peale i was just going to post same sort of thing ... interracial differences do exist and they are wonderful

different nations and races have lots of differences in history culture we dont need to get rid of race to stop racism i think this its sadly often looked that way

when its possible to change peoples genes we could make everyone white that would stop racism but its not something people would agree with im sure

we have to embrace and accept peoples differences to stop racism

Thats true BP but I chose to see all people as people, subject to the same need's and want's we all have, to judge them as a race to me is to somehow view them as less tham human.

A man is a man, he may have a different world view but in the end he needs the same food/air/water we do.

I don't disagree, but the danger there is that it trivializes and potentially ignore conditions specific to a people.

For instance, there are considerations to be made for a child raised in Northern Ireland in the 80's that would not be true of a child raised in Turks and Caicos during the same period.

Acknowledging and celebrating racial differences is important...Mozart was in part who he was because of who he was from; he is the some total of his parts and influences, part of which were racial (pick one).

That is not to say that any one race is supposed to pay for the transgressions of individual, or even a collective, of the same race. But it is to acknowledge that, while we may all be similar on the outside, there are specific stimuli that have a shared origin that only apply to a subset of the population.

At first, Interracial was black and white, to me. HOWEVER, NOW when I think Interracial, I think of 2 people from different races, whether it be white, black, Asian, whatever. To me, I don't care which I go out with, as long as I like them, inside AND out.

Once again BP you've got it right, it's late here ( almost 3am ) and I'm not of a mind to type a lot but I'll tell you my personal credo.

"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you"

Now I'm not a devil dodger ( christian ) by nature but I take good advice from anywhere, including the bible.

I think that as the world becomes more and more globalised race is going to mean less and less.

Oh bollocks, I hate when we agree :)

73% of the time, I view interracial as man/woman. Different species who choose to be together. ;)

Interracial is interracial. I don't know what you expect from me. I've been with women of different races. And race isn't a factor in who I find attractive. If the winds of fate bring two people together who love each other and want to create a life together then that is a sacred union.

Its not the color of skin that defines people its there lifestyle if somone is trash there trash no mater what the color of their skin is. as for interracial relationships the only problem is when children are concieved becouse they somtime become ostricized by both races. the reason black and white come up is it's most noticiable. with hispanics they can sometimes blend in and be mistaken for white. I dont know why oriental and white relationships are more accepted maybe that another topic for another thread.

I'll go with that.

Actually race isn't the problem when you do an interracial relationship. It's the culture clash.

You know. Culture. If I were to have nookie with a hip hop dudester, I would have no way of communicating with him. Why? Hip hop culture is incomprehensible to me, linguistically. Culture, religion, and other things like that make "race" a problem.

Personally, an interracial relationship is when anyone of one race is in a relationship with someone who is not of their race. It's like when the neighbor's shitzu/cockapoo got out and fucked the other neighbor's prized britanny spaniel. The dogs didn't give a rats ass, he got laid and she got knocked up. The peripherals (owners) went ape shit when these mongrels popped out of their britanny and "devalued" the dog. Sound familiar? Like jungle love?

We have trouble with interracial relationships not because we don't like seeing a black man with a white woman, but because the black man's culture is not the same as the white woman's and we don't understand or really accept a culture that isn't our own. It's great over there, as long as it doesn't touch us.

Yep, I am an interracial relationship and I'm in one on so many levels.

I assume you mean interracial as in sex.

Interracial sex is sex between two races, you know, like qualifying heats and final elimination. :p

(what do you mean no one else has sex at the track??)

IT was more of a prevelant thing years ago.

:p

Interesting that there were no more responses to this thread

:p

Well, a lot of the sentiments seem to inadvertenly bleed over to lavvy's thread about racism being alive and well.

Although we still didn't get a whole lot of definitions.

Hmmmm... how about:

Anyone from one race category in the 2000 USA census who has a relationship with someone who is in another category? Seems official enough.

Race ? Warning...rambling ahead

Sorry in advace, but this topic gets me going. This is, after all, what I do.

I think that skin pigmentation has a whole lot less to do with one's cultural background, at least in the ways that most intrusively affect a relationship, than do the differences of national culture. A brown skinned person in the U.S. has a far wider base of similar cultural experience with another U.S. resident of the pink persuasion than they would with another brown skinned person from, say Guatemala. Or a beige skinned person from Korea. Etc.

Under that idea, in the broaded possible terms Asian is a race. African is a race. North American is a race. etc. Continental divide? I don't know.

But, then it starts getting complicated, no matter what you do. Where do we draw the line? As people mix and match, migrate and marry, the whole thing becomes an anachronism, one more hold-over from the age of empires. Example: If your parents are pink skinned people from Africa, but you're born in the U.S., marry a brown skinned person from the Navajo nation, and have a child, what race is that child? What race would they be if they moved to Mexico?

It's all so fucking stupid.

I understand that there are legitimately shared experiences that have to do with the color of one's skin. I also "get" that skin color and place of origin are used as excuses to divide resources unevenly, sometimes in the nastiest and most brutal of ways. That doesn't mean, however, that the ideology that underwrites such behavior is justified.

Anthropologists decided that there were basic races: White, Black, Brown, Yellow, and Red. Their determinations stemmed from as much as they created race relations and restrictions. They were a bunch of "white" guys our to prove that "white" guys are best. Gee, wonder if that affected their findings.

Great book on the subject of race construction: White by Law by Ian Haney Lopez. Also, Omi & Winant's Racial Formation in the United States

It's time to stop perpetuating the bullshit categories of race already. Why is it so hard to do?

Why is the term "interracial" now suddenly not PC? What kind of definition? Black/white, black/Indian, White/Indian, White/Asian, Black/Asian, Indian/Asian, Irish/Italian, Black/Irish, Italian/black, Indian/Jewish, Black/Jewish, Italian/Jewish, Irish/Jewish ... can I stop yet? Any combination of races defines "interracial." I just don't see why there's a judgment assumed.
