Tools change. Today it is SAE, tomorrow it is metric. Yesterday it was Latin, today it is XML. In some ways we need a level of literacy in yesterday, today and whatever tomorrow might be. The one thing I would propose is that one must be literate faster in the future. Blackberry literacy is so very different from letters carried by private mail carriers, or even the simple cards my girlfriend and I sent to each other in college. Points and condenser give way to electronic ignition. The teen line gives way to the cell phone...to prepubescent children.
I don't have an answer. I do, but I know it is not the right one. Not the one that is going to answer the needs of my grandchildren.
