How much do tattoos hurt?

I have tribal halfsleeves on both arms and I can tell you that the elbow area hurt pretty bad, the inner bicep stung a bit, and the shoulder was pretty uncomfortable. Now the dragon on my finger killed, by far the worst of any tattoo I've ever received. Overall though, they don't hurt that bad. If you've ever scraped or cut yourself shaving then that's about what it feels like in most areas. Personally I'm not a fan of going small. If you're going to go through the pain, then atleast make it worth your while and get something a little larger.

Tat's

I had a tattoo done about 10 years ago and have never regretted it. It was not painful ( the tattoo lady went as slow as I needed her to go in certain spots) and healed within a day or two. The location was on my left side of my stomach where I had a "green hornet" drawn. The color has remained very strong ever since. I can only imagine that an ankle, neck, or shin area would be more painful. Good luck. Don't forget that whatever you decide on, imagine that when you are 80 years old, you will still "like it" and not be embarrassed by it.

i have had laser hair removal before...does anyone know if its anything like that?

i've had both - tattoos hurt more, but it depends on the part of the body

pinch yourself on the palm of your hand - doesnt hurt much does it? now pinch yourself on the inside of your thigh - different pain threshold.

backs of the arms, breasts, groin area, stomach - all are more sensitive, but if you're going to get a tattoo the pain is something you just have to endure

Like buxxxom, I have a tattoo on my right hip, part of it on the bone. It felt as if someone etched my hip with a quill. Actually, mine tickled - maybe it was the fact the artist's hand brushed my skin ever so lightly! He had to stop for a moment to let me compose myself. If you do decide get one, make sure it's a design that you really want (I still love mine after 7 years) and that you're completely comfortable with the parlour and the artist and that s/he answers every question you have. If not, run.

I have three on my back and the description that they are more irritating then painful is quite accurate in my opinion. To me the pain was akin to scratching a sunburn and I have a pretty low pain threshold. The most pain was on the one over my shoulder as it went over a bone but as to the rest it wasn't anything excruciating.
My only advise would be to make sure that you really want what you're having done as it will be with you the rest of your life. Remember what looks great on a young nubile body may not look as enticing when your grandchildren are looking at it 30 years down the road. Avoid the "tramp stamp"/lower back tattoo or anything you might find decide on a whim. Your tattoos should have symbolism and meaning at least to you.

ive got 1 with at least 3 more to come. the one i have is on my ankle and it didnt hurt at all. it was borderline exciting, but not as much as piercing. the one on my ankle kinda hurt when they did their "test line" and even then it was more of an irritant. but once things got rolling i couldnt feel it and became comfortable with the whole process. the only thing i couldnt stand was the noise bc it was too reminescent of a dentists drill.

I have about humm?? I lost count...several multiple tats..... both arms are partically sleaved still working on them, harley wings on sholders & several on back, chest, stomach. The most painful experience was getting my elbows webbed. The rest I really didn't consider painful. When you first began a session it's more like an irritating scratching sensation with the outline, by the time he gets to the shading bar it's so num, you don't feel a thing.

Depends on where you get it. Some spots you would probably barely feel... others would hurt like a sunuvabitch. Depends on how many nerves are in that area.

I had my upper ankle done... I can't have my blood taken without fainting, but I had a small filled heart tattooed there and was totally fine. It felt like a weird pinch, but nothing terrible... the most pain was when the skin had some bone to rest against. It was letting the needle drive in a bit more. If its your first, I'd suggest somewhere pretty fleshy... less surfaces for the skin to rest against. Some people say that the outlining seems to hurt the most, when they do heavy black lines.

Something else I've learned, having gotten my first tat at the age of 28, and my most recent this year (age 38). The older you get, the worse they hurt...

are you a guy?

Wish I hadn't been gone so long. I just got my first tattoo. Tomorrow in fact I'm going back to get some final details done that my artist wanted to wait until it was fully healed before doing. I had no real clue what I was getting into.

The tat covers my upper arm, from short sleeve shirt line to the top of my shoulder, and wraps about 3/4 of the way around my arm. The reality is the first 3 sittings didn't hurt much at all. It hurt a bit the next day, but basically like a bad sunburn. The last sitting was the worst for a couple reasons. First, location. We were working in the outlying area, so the back of the tricep, inside of the bicep and point of the shoulder. These locations were pretty sensitive. Also, I'd been through 3 sittings in 8 days, so I was pretty sore already, and we were encroaching on some recently done territory. That's why we waited for the final details.

The really bad part for me was that I reacted to eh A+D ointment, so the last sitting we had to use straight lubriderm. This extrended the healing process and caused a thicker scab than the previous sittings. That scab tended to pull every time I moved my arm becasue of the location, which was very uncomfortable.

All in all though, it wasn't near as bad as I thought, and I'm a wouse when it comes to annoying little things like this. I have a high threshold for pain, but annoying aches bug the hell out of me. The ultimate question is, was it worth it? Absolfreakinlutely. This is totally out of character for me, and everyone is shocked I got one so big. This one had special meaning to me though, and I couldn't be happier. It's addictive though. Hell I already want another one!!!

I hate pain. I have said all my life that as long as it doesn't hurt, I'll do anything.

I wanted a tatt soooooo badly. I got one. The pain wasn't too bad and afterwards I had an amazing feeling once the endorphins got going in my body.

I wanted to either fight or fuck! I felt POWERFUL. AWESOME!

I realized that the pain actually did something FOR me.

I got another tatt!!!!!!!!
I'd get more, but I'm trying to be cautious about what I get and how often.

It's great and addictive. The pain is excellent. Like I said, I'm not into pain...but DAYUM!

Enjoy it.

When I got mine, I was really psyched for it. I've wanted one for ages. It was an awesome experience. I wouldn't want to do it all day, but the scratching/stinging is very bearable. The whole day afterward it felt like the skin had been sunburned. After the first day though, it didn't hurt at all.

I'm ready to get another one.

Tat Pain

I waited until I was 50 yo and really had a design that I wanted. It wasn't that painful, more like an annoying itch. it does need to be touched up which the tattooist said she would do but she lives 1,000 miles away

I've had two done and I didn't think the pain was all that bad. The lines definitely hurt worse that the color. When I had the shading done it just kinda went a little numb. A lot of it depends on the artist and how they work the skin, also. If I had to choose between getting the cartilage pierced in my ear again or getting another tattoo, I would go for the tattoo.

how bad is the pain when you're getting one on your shoulder blade?

i've been looking into getting one (may have it done tomorrow) and was thinking that's where i'd like it..

Not as bad as the foot:rolleyes: I really didn't think my shoulder hurt that much. I had a couple zings but other than that...
