I am looking at going on a elk hunt out west next year. Montana, Colorado, etc.. A lot will come down to getting a tag as an non-resident. Anyone have some tips or suggestions?

Go to Colorado Parks and Wildlife website and apply for tags. Certain elk areas are by lottery draw, but you can get some over the counter tags

Are you asking about tips & suggestions for procuring a nonresident tag, or planning your hunt?
I guess I'm asking about logistical stuff like professionally guided, or self-guided? Antlered vs. antlerless? Trophy bulls or hunting for the best tasting meat? (Spike bulls are the most tender and tasty, but they won't impress your neighbors much if mounted on the wall in your living room, lol.)
We have it all here in Idaho. I'm not claiming our elk hunting is "better" than the other states you mentioned, or that we have better odds of success for a nonresident procuring a tag and/or harvesting, because I really don't know. (I am pouting a bit about the fact that Idaho didn't make your initial list though.)
But I really do live in the heart of prime Idaho elk habitat. I was raised on elk meat, and raised my own family on it too.
Feel free to send me a DM if so inspired. But be forewarned that I'm typically incorrigible male hill folk. So you probably won't get much useful information out of me until I at least see your tits. Bonus points if your apparently clueless hubby doesn't know about it!
