I'm with you on that one.

No offence, but just a question. Why are all hurricanes named after Anglo North Americans and some recent Mexican names?

For several hundred years, hurricanes in the West Indies were often named after the particular saint’s day on which the hurricane occurred. For example "Hurricane San Felipe" struck Puerto Rico on 13 September 1876. Another storm struck Puerto Rico on the same day in 1928, and this storm was named "Hurricane San Felipe the second." Later, latitude-longitude positions were used. However, experience has shown that using distinctive names in communications is quicker and less subject to error than the cumbersome latitude longitude identification methods.

Using women’s names became the practice during World War II, following the use of a woman’s name for a storm in the 1941 novel "Storm" by George R. Stewart. In 1951 the United States adopted a confusing plan to name storms by a phonetic alphabet (Able, Baker, Charlie), and in 1953 the nation’s weather services returned to using female names. The practice of using female names exclusively ended in 1978 when names from both genders were used to designate storms in the eastern Pacific. A year later, male and female names were included in lists for the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. The name lists, which have been agreed upon at international meetings of the World Meteorological Organization, have a French, Spanish, Dutch, and English flavor because hurricanes affect other nations and are tracked by the public and weather services of many countries.

The Tropical Prediction Center in Miami, FL keeps a constant watch on oceanic storm-breeding grounds. Once a system with counterclockwise circulation and wind speeds of 39 mph or greater is identified, the Center gives the storm a name from the list for the current year. The letters Q, U, X, Y, and Z are not included because of the scarcity of names beginning with those letters. Names associated with storms that have caused significant death and/or damage are usually retired from the list.

Hope this answers your question.

Hm, Atlantic Hurricanes are always North American names though? Or spanish/ South American based. Where is hurricaine Hung Lo? Are there divisions on who names what? Thanks for this though, so far. :D

Typhoons tend to be number based, but this is difficult to remember. They stopped naming them in 1977. Only the most destructive typhoons were named though, after the fact. These names tended to be where the worst destruction occurred.

Thank you. Why numbers and not names?

The Japanese like number based systems. Nice and logical.
eg. the 10th typhoon of the season will be called Typhoon No. 10 !!

The scientific community use a four digit classification, the first two numbers denoting the year, ie. 0510 would be typhoon 10 of 2005.
The government however sometimes use a slightly different system because they use the year of the Emperor, ie. Heisei 14 Typhoon No 10 ( 14th year of Emperor Heisei's rule)

A six digit form is also used, the first four digits denoting the year for clarity:
200510, 190510 would be the same in the four digit system.

I feel so loved. :D

New update from Sophie -

As bad luck would have it, her computer got fried in the heat of her apartment while it sat there waiting for her, so she won't be back online as quickly as she had hoped.

The good news is that she and her family have moved into a rental house that has a yard and is about the same size as her last place. They don't have any living room furniture at this point, because theirs was all damaged, but they have beds and bedding, etc. They're sitting on the floor and happy to be in their own space.

This is the first year that her kids are going to be exposed to cold weather, and even some snow. I know that at least one person mentioned that having some winter clothes and maybe coats that they might be able to pass on. Sophie said that she and the kids would be grateful for any of that stuff that people might be able to share. Her kids' sizes are as follows:

Oldest boy - size 10
Middle boy - size 4T
Baby girl - 2T

For those of you who thought you might have toys to share, she said that really only the little girl's (age 18 months) stuff got ruined. She specifically mentioned the MagnaDoodle (her daughter's favorite toy) and some Barbie stuff.

That should be about it.

Unless of course, you have an old or extra computer you can share. Sophie is currently enrolled in a distance program to obtain her degree in library sciences (won't she be the sweetest naughty librarian ever??) and her next assignment is due in 2 weeks. Up till now, she's been staying at her mom's and doing her homework there. But now that they've moved, she's not sure how well that's going to fly.

I have her mailing address if anyone has stuff they'd like to send. PM me and I'll share!

Thanks for reading along!
