If I ventured in the slipstream
Between the viaducts of your dream
Where immobile steel rims crack
And the ditch in the back roads stop
Could you find me?
Would you kiss-a my eyes?
To lay me down
In silence easy
To be born again
To be born again
From the far side of the ocean
If I put the wheels in motion
And I stand with my arms behind me
And I’m pushin’ on the door
Could you find me?
Would you kiss-a my eyes?
To lay me down
In silence easy
To be born again
To be born again
There you go
Standin’ with the look of avarice
Talkin’ to huddie ledbetter
Showin’ pictures on the wall
Whisperin’ in the hall
And pointin’ a finger at me
There you go, there you go
Standin’ in the sun darlin’
With your arms behind you
And your eyes before
There you go
Takin’ good care of your boy
Seein’ that he’s got clean clothes
Puttin’ on his little red shoes
I see you know he’s got clean clothes
A-puttin’ on his little red shoes
A-pointin’ a finger at me
And here I am
Standing in your sad arrest
Trying to do my very best
Lookin’ straight at you
Comin’ through, darlin’
Yeah, yeah, yeah
If I ventured in the slipstream
Between the viaducts of your dreams
Where immobile steel rims crack
And the ditch in the back roads stop
Could you find me
Would you kiss-a my eyes
Lay me down
In silence easy
To be born again
To be born again
To be born again
In another world
In another world
In another time
Got a home on high
Ain’t nothing but a stranger in this world
I’m nothing but a stranger in this world
I got a home on high
In another land
So far away
So far away
Way up in the heaven
Way up in the heaven
Way up in the heaven
Way up in the heaven
In another time
In another place
In another time
In another place
Way up in the heaven
Way up in the heaven
We are goin’ up to heaven
We are goin’ to heaven
In another time
In another place
In another time
In another place
In another face

Oh yes! "She said the man in the gaberdine suit was a spy...." So evocative and essentially American.

Oh you've got me going now, PoeTesse. A few of my favorites:

Under African Skies

Late in the Evening

Hearts and Bones

Lincoln Duncan

So many more, but I'll stop here. I've been riveted to tv coverage of the rescue of the Chilean minors, which has made me cry because it ain't often one gets to witness a miracle.

Thanks for reminding me of all this beautiful music.

Before my fucking CD player shit itself, I was enjoying Lightning Crashes by Live. I really enjoy it as a poem as much as a song. I also enjoy a lot of REM for the same reason. One of my faves of theirs is Nightswimming. I actually used it as a poetry example when I did my HSC (High School Ceritificate, all Aussies do it at the end of Year 12).

"Lightning Crashes"

lightning crashes, a new mother cries
her placenta falls to the floor
the angel opens her eyes
the confusion sets in
before the doctor can even close the door

lightning crashes, an old mother dies
her intentions fall to the floor
the angel closes her eyes
the confusion that was hers
belongs now, to the baby down the hall

oh now feel it comin' back again
like a rollin' thunder chasing the wind
forces pullin' from the center of the earth again
I can feel it.

lightning crashes, a new mother cries
this moment she's been waiting for
the angel opens her eyes
pale blue colored iris,
presents the circle
and puts the glory out to hide, hide, hide.

Nightswimming Lyrics

(Berry/Buck/Mills/Stipe)

Nightswimming deserves a quiet night
The photograph on the dashboard, taken years ago,
Turned around backwards so the windshield shows
Every streetlight reveals the picture in reverse
Still, it's so much clearer
I forgot my shirt at the water's edge
The moon is low tonight

Nightswimming deserves a quiet night
I'm not sure all these people understand
It's not like years ago,
The fear of getting caught,
Of recklessness and water
They cannot see me naked
These things, they go away,
Replaced by everyday

Nightswimming, remembering that night
September's coming soon
I'm pining for the moon
And what if there were two
Side by side in orbit
Around the fairest sun?
That bright, tight forever drum
Could not describe nightswimming

You, I thought I knew you
You, I cannot judge
You, I thought you knew me,
This one laughing quietly underneath my breath
Nightswimming

The photograph reflects,
Every streetlight a reminder
Nightswimming deserves a quiet night, deserves a quiet night

I had to put this up In Memoriam Captain Beefheart, one of the great poets of popular music. Each of these three songs has wonderful lyrics and the middle one, "Candle Mambo", is one of the great married-love songs (and I defy you not to want to dance!).

What a coincidence! I do too!

You missed my personal favorites, though:
  • Rock and Roll Woman, off Buffalo Springfield Again, here badly recorded or, I think, badly lip synched. Whatever.

The crowd here looks singularly unimpressed, kind of like a YAF convention confronted by something left of Nixon. Not even golf claps, fer God's sake.
    .
  • OK. Second clip. All time fave: For What It's Worth.

Look, I know this is not Saigon, or Taylor Swift, Ke$ha, or Katy Perry. It's, like, old shit.

    I am Old Shit, myself.

    OK?
I mean, you wanna tell me Vampire Weekend is a Great Leap Forward in Pop Music?

Got some penny stock to sell you, Bud.

We have pretty similar tastes in rock and roll, I've noticed. :)

How do you feel about The Youngbloods?

Moby Grape?

Hasn't been anything to match this stuff in years, years I tell you! (My daughter always says, "Face it Mom. You'll always be a hippie.) :D

PS My Buffalo Springfield choices are likely a reflection of my decades long crush on Stephen Stills. I've always loved this one, too.
