I'm using Windows 200 and it won't work with Yahoo Messenger. It's way different than it was on Win 98. Anyone know what to do? I'm stumped.

Does your Mic work with other programs -- i.e. windows Soundrecorder?

Does a CD or MP3 go out over the YIM connection?

It sounds like a configuration program or a mixer setup problem. The Mic setting in the mixer driver that came with my sound-card defaults to MUTE -- I have to explicitly go into the mixer and turn the Mic channel on for any program that uses the mixer output.

I don't use any IM program, so I can't give you specifics on where the configuration settings are, but tht's where I'd look first.

What type of mic are you using?

Have you gone into the mixer and made sure to enable the mic channel?

If so have you also gone to Options/Properties/ and then chosen "Adjust device for Recording".

Doing that will often boost the sensitivity of the mike which usually makes it easier for other people to hear you.

If your soundcard has software that comes with it check the software for options as well. There's often a +20db boost that you can turn on.

Threaten it with death from above by sniper kitty :)

Have you tried seeing if you can get windows to record a simple .wav file?

Also...this may seem obvious...but have you checked to make sure it's plugged in right? I know that with my mic I have to turn the PC entirely around and choose the port very carefully since there are a couple of "distractor" options on the back of my soundcard.

Heh. Aiming now. :D

I was talking on the phone to a friend this morning. I mentioned the trouble I was having with this and he offered to let me test his mic on my computer. It worked fine, so it seems I just need a new mic. It worked on my older computer, but has apparently died since then, although that wasn't long ago. Oh well, I can probably get a new mic cheap on ebay sometime soon.

Anyway, thank for trying to help, folks. :)
