I miss the fitness threads and the fitness Doms!

I really wanna try the restorative yoga thing Netz was talking about a few pages back. Staying hunched over the computer 12-20 hours a day is not conducive to doing the other kinds of yoga.

"Are you serious? It hurts too damn much to do that!"

I'm hoping that after Kitty and I move to Birmingham (largest city in the state) in a few weeks, I'll find some opportunity and money to give it a try.

See also anything called "gentle" or "chair" yoga.

I'm climbing on the bike tonight. Before it rains again.

Yay, glad to hear you lost the cough.

1 hr 15 m vinyasa flow.

Ohmmmm ow.
My right sided hip/pigeon pose today just sucked balls. Period related? Crohn's right sided bullshit related? Hope it's nothing.

Will keep digits crossed that it is nothing.

Oh, and along with no cough...codeine, sweet, sweet codeine! LOL. Part of the anti-cough regimen, I have to pop one every time it flares up.

And NO I am not addicted. ;)

Mmm...codeine. If I ever have a terminal illness, I think I'll just off myself with codeine. It'll be a beautiful way to go, suffocation be damned.

I use hill hiking 3 days a week to stay in shape. I also do push-ups and sit-ups on a daily basis. My pet is all about weight machines, though he joins me on my hikes.

With a Demerol chaser. It's almost worth breaking a bone just to get the Demmies.

*All these drug threads lately have got me stirred up. Lit = the gateway drug!

Did about 35 minutes of light trail riding with MIS today. She was a little nervous/wobbly at the start but smoothed out later.

It wasn't on the same trail as previous, as she felt the bumps and such on that one would hurt her shoulder. So we hit the local wetlands park and rode round it for a bit. Good times, but it was a wee bit hot.

I had to miss a couple days of my workouts, due to the holiday and spending some time at Cedar Point, with my son. The first day back on the treadmill was brutal. It always happens whenever I miss time like that...the first few days I have some serious shin splints. Usually it's my right leg, its on the side towards the back. It'll hurt, then burn, then it'll get numb and I'll be ok. By the third day, I can usually fight through it pretty good, and within a couple days of that, I don't have the problem any longer. I hate that I can't get to the same intensity, just because I was away.

Any ideas?

A few days off shouldn't make that big of a difference, not enough to cause shin splints and certainly not on a treadmill, which is far more forgiving than pavement.

I would first suggest visiting a proper shoe store (one that specializes in orthotics) and have them analyze your gait. It might be something as simple as changing your shoes or having some orthotics put in.

Other suggestions would be to talk to a physiotherapist. They might have a solution. I have back issues which affect how I run, so I need to do certain exercises to offset that.

Taping?

ambling walk last night with M. Awesome bird observation hour, just at dusk.
Cardinals and robins at their most territorial, nice houses we envy.

Hopping on the bike in a couple min.

Thanks for the ideas...I have a good pair of Rockport shoes...but they really aren't that important, as long as I go every day. I'm not sure the shoes would even matter after missing a couple days. But I will keep that suggestion in mind, of going to a good shoe store. I never really thought about it.

I've been back at the guy for three days now, and just about where I was last week. Just a little numbing in the lower part of my leg near my ankle. I'll get through it, it's just frustrating, is all.

Take it from a runner, proper shoes are CRITICAL.

Does Rockport even make running shoes?

My husband has chronic knee trouble and I finally got him in to see the doc after about seven years of suffering. First thing the doc says is, "You need better shoes."

I didn't mean to say that shoes aren't important, what I said was that if I skip a week, I don't know that any shoe could help me...and that is a concern and frustrates me.

I power walk for the most part, along with a minute run every 4-5 minutes. I've only been back into working regularly, for the past 6 months or so. I don't have any sort of pain any where else, and I wanna keep it that way...so i'm holding off on increasing the intensity to running, for a while.

I know that within a few days, all will be back to normal...I'd just like to preclude this from happening again in the future when I have to miss a couple days.

thanks for the insight..

No worries.

My point is that there is perhaps some underlying cause for your shin splints. If you are not wearing the proper shoes while you are training regularly, that could be a factor. A few days of missed training should not be causing this, a few days without training is normal.

However, I didn't realize you were referring to walking, not running. Knowing this, I would go with the physio option or if there is a knowledgeable trainer at your local gym it might be worth setting up a one-on-one session. You should be able to take a few days off training and not suffer from shin splits when you return - a few weeks maybe, a few days no.

Weekly weigh-in today and I've lost 4.5 pounds since last week's awful 8-pound post-holiday gain.

This pleases me. Good to be heading in the right direction again.

LB was pretty sick yesterday, and I was having a work day from hell, so we tossed the deload day. Bad habit, I know, but it beats tossing an actual lift day.

Anyway, even with my stress levels, my BP is 153/84. I'm okay with that.

I think I was way too upright with my squats and not spreading my legs enough. And not so good on my lifting lately. Playing catch up late in the week. But legs today and I'll be 2 for 2 on this week. I tend to lose motivation over time. But summer is the WRONG time for that. Too easy to get lazy.

I got my 90 minutes on the treadmill in today. I didn't bother much with a warmup, and went right to the highest elevation...even started faster than I have the last few days, and NO shin splints.

I felt great when I was done, my shirt was completely soaked. It's still weird I'd get the splints after missing a couple days, but I'm good now.

Not a whole lot makes me feel better than a good hard workout..other than good hard sex, of course. Like this and why don't they have this at my gym?

Deload

Some pull-ups with feet supported, some push-ups. Called it.

If the weather holds, I'm going for a day-long mountainous hike on Saturday. It's been a fair few weeks since I really exerted myself, so this will probably kill me.

How did you get rid of the shin splints?
-----------------------------------------------------

Lol....good question. I'd say it was just going every day, to be honest. I didn't change my shoes, and didn't stretch beforehand either...the only things I did was to keep going and to increase the intensity. It's crazy, IMO.

Muscle mass weighs more than fat, but it would seem unlikely you'd gain a couple pounds in a day due to lifting. I know for me, that some days after a good workout, I feel bloated like I had retained water. Maybe it's just the soreness in my muscles, but that's what it feels like...especially in my hands.

I've walked 45 minutes and will do some stuff with weights for arms, pilates, yoga, and some calisthenics this evening. I've been a slug the rest of the week. I cannot keep doing the slug-like behavior. I've got some great legs and pretty good arms that keep getting better.
