I miss the fitness threads and the fitness Doms!

That's a little scary, wow.

Yeah. I'm a bit freaked out. Trying to stay away from everyone until I'm no longer contagious. I thought that would be 24 hours after beginning antibiotics but upon researching it, one site said five days. You'd think the doc, nurse or pharmacist would say something about when it was safe to be in public.

I'm worried about my teens, husband and even cats. Can it get caught by cats? I'm not sure but my lap cat is suddenly sneezing more often than usual.

Exercise if off the table for me right now. I am easily fatigued, atm. I'm hoping to get back to it ASAP. However, research also indicates that the worst symptoms are yet to come and I'm not having them now.

Just a quick thought: the anti-stress and anti-depressant effect will begin almost immediately if you shift your exercise routine into a different (i.e., higher) gear. You don't need to push yourself far beyond your current capabilities in order to feel a helluva lot better about yourself and about the future. All you need is new goals, some resolve to meet them, and the experience of making progress toward those goals.

Now, once you're capable of pushing yourself a good bit harder than you do in your current exercise walks you will definitely also feel an additional level of joy (some people use "endorphin rush" but I like the word "joy") from your exercise. There's just not a whole lot that feels better than the raised level of joy you get when you've pushed your body hard enough to release those lovely endorphins.

I think the first paragraph is starting to happen (just got back from my - I think - 7th workout at the gym since I joind around 3 weeks ago).

Looking forward to thesecond paragaph happening ;)

I'm going to put this here because I know the subject distresses a lot of people on the rest of the board.

But...wow. Talk about dismal news.

Oh geeze. It doesn't help that the economic turndown has people buying cheap crap all over.

:(

I'll be glad when it's not upwards of 90 degrees out, so I can start walking/running again. I like warm weather, but it's too hot for the end of September. I only hope that when the temperature does cool off that it doesn't wreak havoc on my allergies/asthma like it did last year.

Going to buy new shoes and new sports bras in a week or so, though. :)

My Manager is obese - like morbidly obese - about 5'5" and probably a size 24 clothing. 6 Months ago her doctor diagnosed her with PCOS (which makes weight loss difficult), high blood pressure (she refuses the meds because she hates the feeling of swallowing pills), and warned her that she was pre-diabetic.

Her birthday was last Friday (she's a year or two younger than me) and... she was diagnosed with Type II diabetes on Tuesday. Followed by tests today showing a HP bacterial infection of her stomach, which causes peptic ulcers and increases her risks for stomach cancer, and she is on round 5 or 6 of a recurring skin staph infection (which to my uneducated mind is a major sign of her body SCREAMING over the way she's treating it).

The only vegetables she will eat are mashed potatoes and corn. A normal meal at her house is steak, mashed potatoes, corn, mac 'n cheese, bread, and dessert. She orders beef broccoli at the Chinese place - without the broccoli. She refuses to eat fruit, because it "tastes wrong" unless it's perfectly fresh, and she doesn't know how to tell what is or isn't fresh. She blames things on her heritage (Peurto Riccan) saying that "her people" don't eat this or that. She believes the "whole organic movement stuff" is a conspiracy to increase the cost of food. She refuses to take a multi-vitamin, because God didn't think Adam and Eve needed them, so why does she? Her pallet is so ruined, that unless a meal has butter, chemicals, or sauce on it, she can't actually TASTE IT.

And now she's scared, and frustrated over having to prick her finger a million times a day, and asking me for help to "learn how to make healthy food actually taste good".

Sigh.

So, who knew there is a whooping cough epidemic in many states right now? Only one state has officially acknowledged it but I've been diagnosed.

Yep.

It's been on the rise the last several years do to a reduction in herd immunity theoretically caused by non-vaccinating families (due to worries over the use of Thermisol and it's rumored link to Austim), and [often illegal] immigrant migration. Also, the DaPT vaccine is one of those things that needs to be updated every X number of years, and how often have you heard your general practitioner remind you/ask you about vaccine boosters as an adult? (It should also be noted that the DaPT vaccine is slightly less effective than the DPT vaccine - also increasing the odds of an epidemic; however, the live virus DPT vaccine is significantly riskier and therefore no longer considered a viable option.)

I hope you're feeling better soon, FF. One of the kids caught Pertussis from a friend's [un-vaccinated] children a few years ago, and while it wasn't as bad as we feared, it was not a fun winter. :(

Aaaaaand three postings in a row!

My weight is STILL not budging, even though I'm doing my power walking for 60-90 minutes 3-4 times a week.

I am beginning to get annoyed.

But on a happy note, the rec center just installed the coolest freaking stair machine! It's got the stair thingies like and escalator, and it has this neato electronic readout thingie.

And it kicked.my.ass.

I was cussing like a sailor 7 minutes into a 15 minute [level 5] workout, but I did the whole.thing. 1.63km, 48 flights, 290 calories burned - in 15 minutes. I just want to keep playing with it to see how long I can last! LOL

Our gym used to have one of those escalator-like medieval devices. I hated it but loved the workout it gave.

I practically kissed the guys at the front desk on the way out. I hated every second of it, but at the same so freaking happy. LOL

Good to know. Thanks for the information.

Wait, your vaxed child caught it from an unvaxed child?

Imagine a really, really tall kitchen where all the cupboards were reachable only by climbing one of these medieval escalators.

Yes and no.

She [my second] was vaccinated until 15 months, at which point she had a reaction. We couldn't pinpoint it to which it was - MMR or DPT. So we made the decision to delay vaccinations, and her doctors agreed that she should avoid the pertussis vaccine in the future due to the possible reaction when she was a toddler. So she was *partially* vaccinated, ended up getting ill from close friends who are not vaccinated, and spent several months with bronchial induced asthma/on steroids, etc. The friend's children had the same illness [and years later still have issues with asthma because of it], but the friend and her doctor for some reason decided to not "officially" declare it to be Pertussis, even though he told her he was 99% sure that's what it was. All three of them had every symptom; my ex dealt with the doctors and it never occurred to him (or the doctors) to connect the dots - so she wasn't ever officially diagnosed with Pertussis.

As far as I'm concerned, she's had Pertussis, even though it wasn't "officially" diagnosed.

I'm so sorry she had to go through that.

Thanks for the answer to my question. I was hoping those with vaxed kids were safe from me. I've been avoiding as much of the public as I can and still drive my teens around.

This is just...depressing.

You know, now that I live in a place where recreation and healthy eating are just a given among the majority of the population, I forget sometimes that this is not normal, even for Canada. Overweight people are rare here in my city, obese people almost unheard of. Whenever any of my friends go across the border to Spokane, they always come back with horror stories of a) the shocking amount of overweight and obese people they saw and b) how hard it was to find healthy food.

The world is becoming increasingly cheap and empty. Sad.

It most certainly is. This graph and the accompanying copy tell how bad the situation really is and how it's likely to get worse.

Wow, this is horseshit. One of my best friends in the world is Puerto Rican and actually lived there for many years as a child. They sure as hell eat their veggies. Yes, he's a big meat-eater, but it is as much a backlash against how many times his very poor family had meatless meals because all they could afford were beans, rice, and the sundry veggies they could grow themselves. And he bitches about how crappy the bananas are around here.

When he or his very Puerto Rican uncle cook, there's loads of veggies, and, aside from things like double-fried plantains, not a huge amount of oil. Another good friend of mine is likewise from PR, and he cooks the same way. I love it when any of them cook, as the food is brilliant.

My favourite local restaurant is run by a man from Ecuador and his Korean wife. So they have this great mix of American diner food, Korean staples like bul-gogi, and, as a result of me bringing loads of my friends into the place looking for interesting food, random Latin dishes on fridays. He's cooked various dishes from countries all over South and Central America, and the Carribean as well. It's always incredibly flavourful, nutritious, and loaded with vegetables.

Geeze, I can't imagine latin food sans veggies. How bland. Hell, the carniceria (Spanish for butcher) just down the street has way more fresh vegetables in stock than he does meat. (And let me tell you, having a butcher and fresh food grocer within a ten minute walk is awesome.)

Sounds like somebody is making excuses for her crap decisions.

Hey, H, I totally forgot to mention that my ART girl has ordered me a fascia ball and a foam roller. I know you have mentioned the latter before. I'm currently using a tennis ball and that's helping a surprising amount, especially with the glutes.

Australia? WTF? That's a steep climb. Wow.

It's a global epidemic. I have no doubt of that. And yes, I believe it is only going to get worse.

Oh yes, we're rapidly catching up.

:(

I mke the sad face even though I'm one of those, but I'm working on going back down the slope!

Dunno how cheap a fascia ball is, but lacrosse balls are freaking perfect. Rigid as all get out but still enough give to prevent you from hurting yourself. My current foam roller (Darth Roller, as we call it) is this giant black foam roller made of some foam that is approximately the tensile stiffness of titanium. It is used only when need is dire. That said, I do prefer a stiffer foam where possible. I am not, however, one of those freaks that uses a PVC pipe. Darth Roller is enough for my needs.

And, yes, the fascia ball is particularly good for glutes, hams, and, if done right, calves. My calves are all sorts of stupid these days, and I'm not sure why. Tight as hell.
