I miss the fitness threads and the fitness Doms!

I've been out of comission for most of last year. Ready to come back fighting at some point though, and I've been lurking here throughout. All told, I've done ok. I managed to walk some most days and do some weights even here and there. Am now furiously trying to get squats in to prepare for my upcoming marathon of sorts. Darn public msg boards. Anyway. Actually, I've done really well with my diet. Some cheats here and there, but certainly my best record yet. You know, you do what you can do with physical challenges. Ommm. I'm ready.

Marathon of sorts? Care to elaborate?

Today's the last day I'll ever eat Ramen noodles.

Also, taking 3 days off from lifting...ouch! But, I've simplified my nutrition tracking "system"- fewer details to input into the excel file.

What's that you say? Anal? Me? :D

Thanks for sharing. You know, you could always upload pics too.

Nah, not the sort of thing I'd photograph.

He could but many of us will be very thankful if he doesn't. Well, at least one of us.

Not really. Said fluid was clear, and it really didn't look that nasty. It basically looked like, well, a cut that had gotten wet. Felt so much better though.

You've had a tetanus shot in the past ten years right?

Uh, no. Can't say that I have. Feeling fine now. No worries.

I think it's been about 15 years or so actually.

*gets on plane to go smack Homburg upside the head*

Dude, come on. Every ten years. One needle. I'm terrified of the bloody things and I do it.

(Sorry, I'm only giving you the same talk my doctor gave me when my foot got infected. It makes loads of sense though.)

During last night's spin class, I was reminded of a saying my old running partner was fond of...

Running is like banging your head against a wall. Sure feels good when you stop.

LOL. Hard class last night. I love having hardcore bikers as instructors because they make up these fantastic stories as we ride.

"OK, now we're on Hall street, just going past the fire hall, that's the level of tension on this hill."

"Gravel road! And a whole load of bikers in front of us. Better pour on the steam so we can pass them and make it to the top of this mountain!"

"Mud bog! Stand up out of the saddle and push!!"

:)

I was in a class like this where the instructor took us up and down some hills in San Francisco. I got off for the Folsom Street Fair instead.

LOL.

If you get off in the middle of our rides you could get eaten by a grizzly bear!

Why is it when I walk, it takes about 2 miles before I get an endorphin rush, usually about 5 mnutes before I get home?

I can only speculate, but since your experience is pretty much universal, I think my speculation is pretty well grounded. It seems that what we think of as an endorphin rush is the result of an accumulation effect. It seems to take me a good three miles of running before I get the so-called runner's high and doing a short two-miler just isn't enough. Probably, exercise releases some hormone or another and with a certain amount of accumulation, the rush results.

Wow, you get an endorphin rush after walking two miles? I seriously need your body chemistry!

I have to spend about 25 minutes solid RUNNING HARD (at a high resistance on the adaptive motion trainer) before I get any hint of endorphin.

ETA (I've just read the article K linked to) - endocannabinoids, huh? As an erstwhile regular cannabis smoker, I must say that when I do get the exercise high it does always remind me of being stoned... that inexplicable feeling of joyful wellbeing, and the physically.... smooth... feeling.

Interesting. It's a totally different "high" for me. Cannabis makes me mellow. Runner's high makes me euphoric. I get that "out of body" thing where I almost feel as if I'm being pulled along by an invisible rope. But it usually takes at least 20 mins to get there, minimum, and a good strong effort.

In any case, there are lots of new theories emerging about the "runner's high". Intriguing. I don't always get it. Very unpredictable.

You gotta figure that there are a lot of mechanisms involved and activated when you're working out- each of which would impact neurotransmitter releases (and reception?), leading to the unpredictability you note.

Absolutely. I'm always amazed that there are days when I feel so strong and then I head out on a run and end up slogging my way through the whole thing. Then there are days when I drag my ass to the pavement, feeling like poo, and then suddenly I'm flying - strong, fast and euphoric.

The human body is amazing and mysterious.

I cracked them open last night and expressed the fluids. Feels VASTLY better today.

I think I won't read back for more detailed info. ;)

I wouldn't have a problem with fitness if I had a nicer gym nearby. I can't get motivated by concrete and exurbia.

I spent two years on a small island with NO gym, nice or otherwise, training in high temps and 100% humidity. My weights were water bottles in plastic bags. My gym was a cement floor, a chair and an old speaker.

Shift your paradigm.

The joy of fitness is internal! :)
