I really, REALLY DISlike some of this time of year

I think at least a few posters assume I'm contemplating suicide and that couldn't be further from the truth. Some people I know are having a difficult time right now, and I think it all sucks, because it's not their fault and for it to happen at this time of year is even worse. And they won't have an answer until after the first of the year, which makes it even harder to take.

For the record, nobody knows what I do to help those in need and I'm not going to explain just to satisfy that demand. Some things I can't talk about without giving away something about me. Someone may use it in a search to find out who I really am. So, either you'll think I do my part, or I don't. Either I just sit on my ass, watching TV and complaining the whole time or I just look the other way when I could be doing something about it. No matter what I say, there will be some who believe what they want to believe. I just wish those commercials would stop showing the sad images. That's it, in a nutshell.

So I guess the offer of a virtual hug (if you were a hugging kinda guy) is outta the question.

For myself, I understood your original post, 'I get it', so to speak. And can relate, on a different level, and commiserate too. That's it.

Then its ok, I can relate.
But doesnt the fact that you do and will help some other animals who would otherwise end like the ones in those images make you feel better? Since you do know that you cant help them all and you are doing all you can?
Yeah, but not enough. Helping 10 or 20 animals that need help really doesn't stop the pain I feel when I see one little animal shivering in the corner because someone hurt him. That's just how I am. I can't change that.

I'm not really into virtual anything, but the sentiment is understood and warmly accepted. Now, if you're ever in eastern Kansas...

Yeah, the bit below is what made me think you were seriously hurting.

If you're just bitchin' about ads, there's not much to say except - I'm sorry for your friends' troubles. Now turn off the fucking TV.

Fair warning...I'm not a happy camper, right now. I'm like a loaded gun and could go off at any moment. Shit's happening right now that I don't like and while it doesn't affect me directly, it does affect people I know directly. And these damn commercials are just the icing on the cake. These images are more offensive to me than violence between adults. At least people and adults know why things are happening to them. God, I hate some of the things that make up this world.

Shit, I thought I'd feel better after this post.

some of the comments here assume that those who don't like the ads, simply don't want to know nothing could be farther from the truth. I spend part of every single day helping those less fortunate or simply those who need help what I do object to in those advertisements is the fact that they play on the holiday season to try and make people feel guilty about what is happening in the world. That guilt should not be seasonalbeing overburdened with more and more sad images at a time of year when people's emotions are already running high to me seems irresponsible at the very least. Of course we should all place charity at a high rate in our lives. But deliberately playing on people's emotions at this time of year more than at any other seems disgustingly manipulative.
I agree that they do show these commercials more often at this time of year and the whole reason is because this time of year is what people have come to know as the season of giving. We should share some of that giving during the rest of the year, but we really don't. This holiday season is great, but right after the New Year, it quickly fades away.

There are a lot of commercials on during this time of year, but most of them are easily forgotten because they are full of actors or pitchmen being paid to play a part. I can't forget those images of suffering animals and kids. They aren't actors or pitchmen. I don't even think PETA is that blatant with their commercials.

Apparently you are sensitive because as you said "shit is happening right now" to someone you care about.
Then why let yourself be even more provoked to hurting by those who are deliberately aiming to hurt you? Yes, turn the fucking TV off.

If you want to talk about totally disgusting ways certain organizations are trying to push your buttons with such commercials though, I couldnt agree more and I think my previous outburst can tell you exactly how I feel about them and why.

Yeah, just bitching about ads and my friend's troubles at a bad time of year.

Just in case anybody wants to know, I've spent most of this evening posting with a cat sitting on my chest and another one watching me type, waiting for his chance to make a move on my fingers.

I wish it were so easy. I watch a lot of TV at work. Yes, it might seem strange, but I have a fair amount of off time in the type of job I do. And I work nights, so there isn't a lot else to do. And it is cheaper for these people who pay for these commercials to show them in the middle of the night, so I see them a lot. Sometimes, every commercial break of a show has that same commercial in it.

I guess I could change channels, but we don't have cable at work, so there aren't that many channels to change to. And those commercials are on all channels. Turning off the TV could mean I fight to stay awake which jeopardizes my job. God forbid a camera sees me sleeping. Not good. Watching TV is OK, but sleeping is not. OK, OK, I do work a little bit.

Cats :)
Mine is making me get up and open the door between my room (where I have no heating) and a living room (where my husband sleeps with heater on max) every 2 minutes. For no reason but she hates the closed door.

I envy you. I wish I had 1) a job, 2) a night shift job. TV you can keep...

Maybe you could get some good book instead?

Oh, God. I'd be asleep before the second page. Even a magazine would put me to sleep. I do have the Internet most of the time, but of course, the sex sites are blocked and they watch how much you are on it and send you a nasty email, if you go over the limit they set. LOL, they are watching, so it's good they block the sex sites. So, TV wins. I do take a DVD to work every now and then, but there are a lot of old black and white movies on TV that time of night. I love old black and white movies.

Good black and white movies with crappy, sad commercials inbetween.

Do they watch if you chat around as well? I know you said you dont do "virtual" things, is that experience or bias?
I thought I didnt care about cyber as well, and I dont really compared to real stuff but sometimes its fun.

Job and a night shift and internet...... oh God

You can't save the world, you can only do what you can do. For me, I have rescued from the streets animals and/or from the county animal shelter. I help out family (read: not enabling but helping). I contribute to local charities, those I can see spending most of their dollars helping those less fortunate. We have rental property. I know full well that the oldest child would not graduate high school if he was not in our school district, he'd have fell through the cracks. One high school graduate is better than one high school drop out.
And to DVS's point, all too many "charities" aren't charities. Best to keep ones dollars local.

I'm sorry that it seems I have all the things you want and I don't appreciate them.

They do watch where I go as in web sites and such. And I'm sure they have various words tagged like those with a sexual context. I can't get on any outside email sites, ebay, myspace or facebook, either. Strangely, I can get on Amazon. I work for a not for profit company, so online gambling is a no-no. That means those online game sites are off limits. I don't like games, anyway.

I haven't tried to get on Lit, but I'm sure if it isn't on the off limits list now, it would be after some of the posts were seen. Sometimes pay my bills online, while at work. That and those black and white movies. That's the extent of my excitement.

No, I'm not really into virtual things. I've never really been an online type of player. At least for me, once I experienced real life play, anything else was just a distant second.

You do, really. You should count your blessings.
I would give my left tit to have such job. (Ok half of it, and it wouldnt be such a big loss :D)

But I am out of ideas. I know I would be in heaven to just have a job where I could go online even on most innocent sites the whole night. Because thats mostly what I do now only I dont get paid for it.
You having to watch those sucky commercials sounds like a blasphemy.

I don't get on the Internet the whole night. In fact, if I did, I think I'd get a nasty email pretty soon. I'm not sure how they add up Internet usage time, but I think it's per the month. And if you get too many nasty emails, I think they lower your speed, then cut you off completely.

The Internet is just like TV...something they give us to keep us awake. They are aware that we're out in the boonies with nothing to do and so they give us a few ways to keep awake. But they won't go overboard with something we don't need to do the job. I don't know how much I could get on the Internet before getting the nasty email. I work with a couple guys who have each gotten one. I know one of them was always watching movies on Hulu. And it's not good to get a nasty email from the IT people. They also send the email to your boss, who then assumes you are doing nothing but getting on the Internet all night long. You know how bosses are always assuming the worst.

They can't track the TV usage. It's free, except for the crappy sad commercials.

Just smile and nod. I hate the way sometimes you make a comment and people HAVE to search for a deeper meaning or read so much into it. Sometimes a rant and move on is all that some people need and others need the whole angst ridden discussion. I do wish the angsters would let us move forward instead of wallowing in a pit of misery they try and create for us non angsters. Not going to mention the whole broken record talking thing either :p

I hate those ads as well. Apparently my comment that I would pay for birth control at $1 a day rather than feeding more starving children as I feel that would be more beneficial in the long run is nasty, cynical and shows that I have no feelings for people or their suffering. Who knew.

After reading your post again, I understand and I also agree. ;)

I probably shouldn't tell you that reading this gave me goosebumps. And my imagination to run wild!

I have a weird overdramatic reaction to animals in pain and needing homes. I seriously cannot handle it. I bawl at the commercials, hell I can't even look at the shelter adoption websites (eg Petfinder) without crying, and I definitely cannot handle adoption days locally. You know that parody dating video where the girl wants to hug every cat, but she can't? That's me.

So I donate money. Periodically to local groups, and regularly to Best Friends in Utah. I know my contributions make a difference for animals, but I still CANNOT look at the commercials. They are designed to evoke an emotional response, but I get TOO emotional. When the Sarah McLachlan songs start playing, I am on a new channel immediately.

This, exactly, for me.

Exactly so.

Eh that sucks. I would rather have no internet at all than have it limited like that. It would be like putting me on a strict diet and letting me run loose in a candy store

Do they monitor what you do with your PC overall? I would install my games. Anno series. PvZ. Dragon Age. Or do some graphics, I could play with my graphic programs forever. Or get back to my knitting (no, I am not suggesting you should do that :D). On the other hand I do love reading and a good book can keep me up all night.

Even without TV I am still envious about that job you have...
