Ideal Holiday Destinations

See that was my next problem, working out the best time to go... I could maybe squeeze some time in june.. otherwise it would be september... Unless I kept waiting. When is best time to visit the caribbean as I know it rains more during certain parts of the year...

It was sort of the whole cliche "romantic getaway in paradise" i was looking for.. lol

Just be aware of hurricane season when planning vacations in the caribbean.

Caneel Bay is a romantic getaway in paradise, no question.

Check out this graph, from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. I definitely would not plan an expensive vacation in the Caribbean during August, September, or October.

Many Caribbean hotels and resorts offer off-season rates, and I highly recommend taking advantage of them. May and June are usually great times for a trip like this. Lower prices, fewer people, but hurricane season hasn't kicked in yet.

I traced K's family back to John Armstrong, who was (purportedly) Robin Hood. He had an estate in Wales, I think. I'd have to check my records to be sure. I also traced his dad's family back to the original pilgrims (Plymouth rock, thanksgiving pilgrims). And, for those of us from the Portland area, his moms family are also some of the original settlers of the sauvie islands, they came over via the Oregon Trail.

My aunts have done my family to death, so I didn't bother, but on my mom's side of the family we are descendants of William the Conqueror and Alexander the great. On my dad's side we're descendants of General Hooker (who hookers were nicknamed after) and a member of the James gang. (My great great (maybe another great in there) grandfather grew up with Jesse and Frank and actually named his children Jessie and Frank.
This is very cool, Graceanne.

Has your family passed down detailed records through the generations, or are you using outside sources for research? If the latter, which ones?

May and june could be possibles, esp if I can arrange something last minute. Otherwise I may have to wait until next year to avoid the hurricanes..

Thanks for the advice though!

Quite welcome. Here's hoping you get to go, and have a great trip.

I think November 1st is the end of the season. I know we've had late season ones here in Florida even once school is in session again.

My grandfather has our genealogy maped out. I'd love to get ahold of his books again. With the strokes his just not there enough to be able to make sence of it himself.

I just think it would be really cool to come home with new stories for him. Hell, I'd be thrilled to find out we were a bunch of potatoe farmers in Ireland as much as I would to find out we were Viking roalty. I just love history.

Me, too. LOL I'm as thrilled to be related to a member of the James gang as I am to be related to royalty. Honestly, if you go far enough back in genealogical history everyone can find royalty in their blood lines. lol You can't always find well known criminals. :D

Depends. A lot of what is known is through word of mouth, which my aunt started recording as a teenager. A lot of the stuff we know is hard to back up because of the holocaust. If you go far enough back you can tap into other people's genealogical records. I use ancestry.com a lot, because they site their sources. I ADORE the censuses and can't wait for them to release the 1940 census (2 more years!). Censuses are just a wonderful help when researching genealogy. So is the social security death index (for people who were born when their were social security numbers). One of the reasons I'd love to go to the UK is to see if I can research things further back, because once you leave the US it's a bit harder to research. A lot you have to assume that the person who's telling you this is telling the truth, but you learn to take anything that isn't cited with a grain of salt.

Yes, but will it have a working dungeon with a DomSnape available for recreation purposes? Or a SwitchSirius? Or a SubLupin?

Now that would make some money...
*shrugs*
Just sayin'....

It would thrive, chy. And doesn't a "Hogwarts Express" sound like something particularly painful? :D

That depends on the fanfiction and/or personal imagination of the person involved...

Although, it would be a brilliant name for a fucking machine "ride" now that you mention it.

i have always wanted to go to Chile and Peru. i want to see Inca ruins and travel the Chilean coastline.

DGE, my dear, i'm using the safe word when it comes to any Harry Potter fucking. just saying. every girl has her hard limits. ;)

So if money was no object, what places would you visit and what hotels that you have seen that you have always wanted to visit.?

Ok.. so for me money is still an object. But, I am looking for ideas of somewhere to go and it is a good opportunity to over indulge slightly and do something I might not always have the chance to do. As some of you are aware, I have been on many "city break" type holidays over the past few years, mainly to the USA, and this time I am thinking somewhere with beautiful scenery, golden sands, clear sea and secluded hotels/villas. If you have a suggestion, then please share it. If you just have another idea of a dream holiday that is different to what I mentioned, then share it too :) Im sure everyone else would love to hear any thoughts/dreams that someone has.

right now, I want peace and quiet. Massages and facials and yoga. I would even take a week at a silent monastary if they gave massages and facials.
For the family, I'd want a nice tour of Europe, taking trains, etc,.

I am so Beating your Bludgers and grabbing your Snitch.

Russia. It has everything you can imagine and so much more. I also like Ukraine a lot and want to go to Kazakhstan and Tadjikistan again and see more of the Central Asia. I love Vienna and visit it regularly at least 2-3 times a year.

I've traveled a lot and lived in several countries, still Russia is for me the place that I find myself returning to over and over again. I've been there 8 times plus the occasional work related short trips there. That adds up to almost a year, and have hardly seen anything of the country.

Samarkand and Bukhara are the places to go to. I went when there on a holiday when they were still part of the Soviet Union. The architecture in these places is fabulous. The Rhajistan in Samarkand must be one of the most remarkable group of buildings in the world - yet very few people know about it. Also, it is on the silk route from China to the Middle East and has a fascinating history. We have decorated our bathroom in colours inspired by it (blue, turquoise, yellow) with our own photos on the wall. It looks very cool.
