I think it probably isn't a function of standards changing but rather a case of uneven scrutiny...That's quite possible. One person might be pickier than another.

Still, it's better to have to deal with human beings. One of the forums (fora?) I hang out in is a local one, and it does things the cheap and lazy way, i.e., everything gets run through a filter that throws things out on the strength of a single word. Consequently, in a thread discussing cheap places to eat in my town, I cannot mention Dick's Wings, which happens to be one of the very few places where three adults can have dinner and two pitchers of beer and get out of there for less than $40. What this forum would do if I tried to talk about Mr. Clark, Mr. Cavett, and the late unlamented Mr. Nixon I haven't even tried to find out.

Sex is a part of all of our lives at any age, and Lit does acknowledge underage references when there is an actual story to back it up. References, not descriptions. You can mention that something happened with your 16-year-old character, but you cannot create an image of anything sexual until that character turns 18.

You can mention that something happened with your 16-year-old character, but you cannot create an image of anything sexual until that character turns 18.

That's pretty much the way it goes, but let me add an experience I had with a series that I still consider my masterwork, a 12-part novella called "Me and My Uncle." The absolutely essential plot twist involved the narrator/heroine being sexually molested by her stepfather beginning when she was 10 and continuing for the next year or so. Even though I wrote that particular scene in very general terms, the story was rejected the first time I submitted it. I wrote a note to the board, explaining that the scene was the fundamental crux of the story from which everything in the story subsequently flowed, I rewrote the offending scene to where she simply stated that this happened to her, and it was accepted the second time. The key, then, I believe is context. Anything that even hints of using someone underage for the purposes of titillation is going to be rejected, and rightly so. But there are a few gray areas, where a little leeway is permitted.

But back on thread....sort of.... This "underage" thing is such a classic question here, asked hundreds if not thousands of times, including by me.

And I understand Lit's position on this and agree with it given the poisonous atmosphere as regards adolescent sexuality in our current culture. Far better to have this place safe than not.

There is a huge irony in all this, of course. Presumably, our society wishes to protect our little darling teenagers from scourge of sexuality. In this make believe world, they would emerge fully developed at 18 completely naive as to the sexual ways of the world.

They would, presumably, act just like the "implied underage" incredibly naive bimbo's do in some stories trying to slip under the radar here. Of course, because everyone knows how absurd that is, it "fails the test"!!! WTF????

Luckily, this is the only example of hypocritical hysteria alive and well in our society.
