If you go out tonight between 9 PM and 11 PM local time and look to the South/SSE, you will see a bright star fairly high in the sky. If you happen to have a pair of binoculars, look at the star.

That star is Jupiter. If you look closely, you should see anywhere from one to four pinpricks of light next to Jupiter. Those are four of its many moons.

The above assumes you have a relatively clear sky and are away from heavy light pollution. You don't need heavy duty binoculars. I only have 7x35 and could easily see two moons. They were in a straight line from Jupiter at the 2:30 position.

failing that there is the option to go out tomorrow between 12.04 PM and 12.35PM using a pair of decent binoculars or a good telescope look directly into the sun. this will initaly show a pattern of extremely bright sparkle effects followed by a random patern of blackspots.
 
Jupiter is quite amazing if you have a telescope. Being able to see it so well is weird but once it's size really sinks in it becomes awe inspiring. Jupiter is fucking big.

It's fun in July to watch Mars cross the sky at night. I'll often sit out and smoke a bowl and watch it while I stargaze and contemplate my place in the Universe while also thinking I need to order a pizza before they close.

Anyway yeah.
 
For my part I had a vague recollection of hearing about in May, but like those who have posted, my weather is almost always undesirable when it comes to celestial events so I forgot about it. Almost without exception we have clouds when anything happens.

Right now we are fortuitous in that the bad weather happened during the week and the weekend is good. I'm going to go out tonight to the highest spot around and get a better look.

Also, supposedly I'll be able to see both Mars and Mercury right as the Sun sets, though I'm not sure our horizon will be clear enough (we have low mountains where I live).

For those who do have bad weather, the planet will be visible for another week or two so hopefully your weather clears during that time.

The star is Jupiter? I am sure you meant to say that the dot of light that looks similar to a star is Jupiter. Either way, it is magnificent to see the amazing wonders of he night sky. Thanks for pointing out this event.

In technical fairness, as the premier gas giant in our lovely Solar System, Jupiter is said to have been a "failed star."

Now, if you wanna see another candle in the sky, all it needs is someone with a spare nyoo-clear Zippo to bop over and light that beeyotch up...:D
 
It's been a few months and when the clouds weren't around, I checked out Jupiter before going to sleep. I was able to see three of the four visible moons, though it varied depending on where they were in their revolution around the planet. I was never able to see the fourth moon. Either the light pollution was hiding it, or I wasn't looking where I should have been.

Now, Jupiter is almost due West by 9:30 PM since the Earth has moved ahead in the solar plane. However, at this same time, Saturn is now due South and about the same elevation above the horizon. The orange "star" is clearly evident, just as Jupiter's shiny orb was.

You'll need a good pair of binoculars to see any evidence of the rings. Also, you'll need to hurry. Those rings won't last long. Current estimates indicate the rings will be gone in about 300 million years, so look while you can.

Thanks. I saw that :) I'm really glad I've seen this thread because it game an opportunity to watch this awesome stars night. I have been using a binocular I've bought before and it was one of the most exciting nights due last years. At that time the little triangle-and-parallelogram of the rest of Lyra, much fainter, dangles straight down from Vega when you face southeast. Crane your neck up.

Friday, August 30

• By 9 or 10 p.m. two of the most famous deep-sky objects, the Double Cluster in Perseus and the Great Andromeda Galaxy M31, are in high view in the east. Did you know they're only 22° apart? They're both cataloged as 4th magnitude but they look rather different, the more so the darker your sky. See for yourself; they're plotted on the all-sky constellation map in the center of the September Sky & Telescope, which should be all the map you need to find their precise locations naked-eye. They're below Cassiopeia and farther to Cassiopeia's right, respectively.
