I'm not sure how to go with this. I've got the setting in the early 19th century, but I'm not certain if I should make the "love story" heterosexual or gay couple?

If I do make it into a gay couple, then should I use two men or two women?

I think 2 women would be more unusual in that period. I belive gay male sex was more socially excepted then so my vote would be two women. or two women forcibly take there male cousins virginity. That would be hot

Homosexual sex was not discussed, it was entirely possible half of the towns men were fucking the other half of the towns men but it was not discussed, finding two men in the middle of it was an ooppss back out of the room moment. Same thing with two women, though most men would watch and suggest both women find a man, or himself, usually himself I'm sure.

All that was needed for an actually homosexual man or woman to do was to find a 'roommate' and at least outwardly look like two men or women living together only. Public kissing was looked down on in general anyway until rather recently, namely the sixties.

Now as for your incest, in the 19th century it wasn't incest unless they were siblings or first cousins. Second cousin onward it was just two people falling in love, in many areas first cousins wasn't all that bad.

Too true. Although the tradition would've been a little old by then, it used to be a woman would simply add rather than replace her husband's name onto her own, resulting in Maria Barbara Bach becoming known as Maria Bach Bach <3

They would have to move to a new town but I suppose it could happen. The marrying preist would talk to both of them beforehand but so long as the 'female' held up the facade of female they would be married. Of course dropping the facade at any time would null the marriage and they probably would face problems from the townsfolk. Two men living as husband and wife is fine, shoving their face in it is very not fine.

It has perhaps happened but the 'female' would have to be a 24/7 crossdresser and shave daily.

The other way round (female disguised as a male) might be easier, but a false beard is difficult to maintain for a long time, and many men wore at least "mutton chop" whiskers then.

There are a number of well documented examples of women successfully living as men in that period: Charlotte Badger, Catherine Hagerty, Margaret Croke (aka Margaret Jordan), Johanna Hård, Sadie the Goat, and Gertrude Imogene Stubbs to name but a few.
