right, so i have a question -- ijust found out, that a friend of mine is giving her baby pedialyte every day, instead of formula.. 1/3 to 1/2 of her consumption is pedialyte every day.... seems to me, thats a bad thing>?! have any of you heard of such a thing? {these guys also, pick their baby up EVERY time she cries,,, and doesnt believe in walkers or play yards... say one has the baby, whos 7 mos, and they have to go to the bathroom? they place thebaby on the bed, and pile pillows around her... becuase babys shouldnt be confinde... according to them walkers and play yards are only used to take the place of parents----- im not joking, i seriously wish i was}

Thats for dehydration I thought....for when babies are sick and can't keep things down...Maybe I am wrong. I don't know...

She should still give her baby some formula though or rice cereal

your right - pedialyte is for dehydration - not sustanance - babies need formula - you should really try to talk w/your friends and see why they are giving the pedialyte - it's not healthy to drink all the time.

at 7 months a good balance of formula, water and juice should be good.

just my 2 cents

i guess they give her some cereals etc... the reason for the pedalyte? "well, shel ikes it better than formula" sadly, they wont take any advice from me, because i dotn know how to raise children{ i ONLY have 2 kids, and theyre BOTH BOYS. so i cant POSSIBLY know how to mother and raise a girl}

yeh we really dont talk that much anymore.. i probably should have called her an acqauntance not a friend...

pedialyte is for dehydration and it can be harmful to the baby if taken too much. In noway is that a substitute for formula simply because it doesnt have all the vitamins and minerals that your child needs. Her baby may become underweight and can also develop mental problems by not getting the right nutrition. I advise you to talk to her again because she's hurting her baby. And about the walker and playpen. A walker is used to promote her baby to take her first steps and eventually begin to walk on her own (it helps the baby). A playpen is somewhere safe for the baby to play in. Surrounding her baby with pillows can be fatal her baby has a chance of suffocating. Please talk to your friend about this.

Besides, at 7 months, pillows will not keep a baby on the bed. It will find a way out and it will fall on its head.

Excessive pedialyte has already been covered by others. It is a danger as is being used.

I agree that the pedialyte could be dangerous if it's not needed medically--if she won't listen to you then tell her to at least ask her Dr. about it. The leaving on the bed with just pillows around her is dangerous too. As far as picking her up when she cries or not putting her in a walker/playpen--that's just parenting style. Everybody parents differently and that part won't hurt her--IMO.

Unless she's eating a lot of solid food, I'd be concerned about whether she's getting enough calories. Eight ounces of Pedialyte has only about 25 calories or so, whereas eight ounces of formula has about 150 calories. Pedialyte is also very high in sodium, which can't be good for a baby on a daily basis. Nutrition issues aside, I'd also be concerned about what that stuff could do to her teeth once they start coming in (if they haven't already).

As has already been pointed out, pillows will not keep a 7-month old who's capable of rolling over in the middle of a bed.

I have to confess that I didn't use walkers for my children--IMO, walkers are dangerous. I bought an Exersaucer and a stationary bouncer, and my little ones had a blast!

i like snickers bars better than oatmeal, but... well....

your friends are either aware of some parenting insight that's far above the standards and practices in place today or they're complete, blithering idiots. dr. spock wound up being both... so who knows.

Not to mention that she'd never have developed a taste for it if someone hadn't given it to her in the first place.
